Fifteen years ago, I took a summer vacation in Lecce in south ern Italy. After climbing up a hill for a panoramic(全景
的) view of the blue sea, white buildings and green olive trees, I paused to catch my breath and then positioned myself to ta ke the best photo of this panorama.
Unfortunately, just as I took out my camera, a woman approa ched from behind, and planted herself right in front of my view . Like me, this woman was here to stop, sigh and appreciate t he view.
Patient as I was, after about 15 minutes, my camera scanning the sun and reviewing the shot I would eventually take, I gre w frustrated. Was it too much to ask her to move so I could ta ke just one picture of the landscape? Sure, I could have aske d her, but something prevented me from doing so. She seeme d so content in her observation. I didn’t want to mess with that .
Another 15 minutes passed and I grew bored. The woman wa
s still there. I decided to take the photo anyway. And now whe n I look at it, I think her presence in the photo is what makes t he image interesting. The landscape, beautiful on its own, so mehow comes to life and breathes because this woman is en gaging with it.
This photo, with the unique beauty that unfolded before me an d that woman who “ruined” it, now hangs on a wall in my bedr oom. What would she think if she knew that her figure is captu red(捕
捉) and frozen on some stranger’s bedroom wall? A bedroom, after all, is a very private space, in which some woman I don’t even know has been immortalized(使…永
存). In some ways, she lives in my house.
Perhaps we all live in each others’ spaces. Perhaps this is wh at photos are for : to remind us that we all appreciate beauty, t hat we all share a common desire for pleasure, for connection , for something that is greater than us.
That photo is a reminder, a captured moment, an unspoken c onversation between two women, separated only by a thin sq uare of glass.
24. What happened when the author was about to take a phot o?
A. Her camera stopped working.
B. A friend approached from behind.
C. Someone asked her to leave.
D. A woman blocked her view.
25. In the author’s opinion, what makes the photo so alive?
A. The woman’s existence in the photo.
B. The perfect positioning of the camera.
C. The rich color of the landscape.
D. The soft sunlight that summer day.
26. The photo on the bedroom wall enables the author to bett er understand ________.
A. the need to be close to nature
B. the importance of private space
C. the shared passion for beauty
D. the joy of the vacation in Italy
27. The passage can be seen as the author’s reflections(反思) upon _______.
A. the pleasure of traveling
B. a particular life experience
C. the art of photography
D. a lost friendship

Most of us will be familiar with the traditional talent show set-up: thousands of hopefuls line up outside the audition (试音) room, wait for hours, go in and perform for a group of judg es. Then these potential pop stars could be lucky and get thro ugh to the next round, or they might hear the command, “Sorr y, it’s a ‘no’ from me”. But what do the judges actually bring to a talent show?
Music talent show judges attract millions of viewers each wee k to their programs. As public figures, they play an important p art in advertising campaigns for these programs. But they ofte n receive high salaries and can be moody. Are they really wor th the expenses and difficulties that they can cause? One solu tion might be to replace them with computers.
Can computers really match human judges? Scientist Dr. Nick Collins and his team at the University of Sussex think they ca n. Dr. Collins has been working on a project that involves prog ramming three computerized judges that he says would be far more consistent in their judgment of musical performances. E mploying a special programming language, Dr. Collins’s digita l judges can be trained up by “listening” to particular musical s tyles. After they have been listening for a while, the programm
ing language allows these judges to spot the specific features of the music. It takes eight hours to train the electronic judges in this way. During this time, they analyze lots of information a bout each track (录
音) they listen to, including the voice quality of the music, the r hythm and the way the tracks change over time.
Collins even says that the judges also have pet hates or guilty pleasures and that he can’t expect how they will turn out. He adds, “The judges’ listening ability is not yet as good as a hu man ear, but they won’t be as moody as some human reality TV show judges.”
Maybe that’s the problem with this electronic musical change. Real human judges on talent shows interest us with their pers onality, decisions and humorous words. Will a computer be ab le to do the same?
28. The setup of the traditional talent show is described in Par agraph 1 to _________.
A. find out more potential pop star
B. show the popularity of the talent show
C. bring up the topic of talent show judges
D. make people familiar with the talent show
29. What is the key message conveyed in Paragraph 2?
A. Judges are very important in the talent show programs.
B. There are some problems with talent show judges.
C. There are too many advertisements in talent show progra ms.
D. Music talent shows are very popular nowadays.
30. Which of the following best describes how Collins’s comp uterized judges work?
A. They follow the change of each track.
B. They discover the characteristics of the music after listenin g to it.
C. They assess the voice quality of specific music.
D. They imitate the specific features of different music styles.
31. What’s the writer’s opinion about replacing real human jud ges with computerized ones?
A. Doubtful
B. Interested
C. Satisfied
D. Optimist ic

Would it surprise you to learn that, like animals, trees commu nicate with each other and pass on their wealth to the next ge neration?
UBC Professor Simard explains how trees are much more co mplex than most of us ever imagined. Although Charles Darwi n thought that trees are competing for survival of the fittest, Si mard shows just how wrong he was. In fact, the opposite is tr ue: trees survive through their cooperation and support, passi ng around necessary nutrition "depending on who needs it". Nitrogen (氮) and carbon are shared through miles of undergr ound fungi (真
菌) networks, making sure that all trees in the forest ecologica l system give and receive just the right amount to keep them a ll healthy. This hidden system works in a very similar way to t he networks of neurons (神经
元) in our brains, and when one tree is destroyed, it affects all. Simard talks about "mother trees", usually the largest and old est plants on which all other trees depend. She explains how dying trees pass on the wealth to the next generation, transpo rting important minerals to young trees so they may continue t o grow. When humans cut down "mother trees" with no aware ness of these highly complex "tree societies" or the networks on which they feed, we are reducing the chances of survival f or the entire forest.
"We didn't take any notice of it, " Simard says sadly. "Dying tr ees move nutrition into the young trees before dying, but we n
ever give them chance." If we could put across the message t o the forestry industry, we could make a huge difference towa rds our environmental protection efforts for the future.
32. The underlined sentence "the opposite is true" in Paragra ph 2 probably means that trees ________.
A. compete for survival
B. depend on each other
C. protect their own wealth
D. provide support for dying trees
33. "Mother trees" are extremely important because they ____ ____.
A. pass on nutrition to young trees
B. look the largest in size in the forest
C. seem more likely to be cut down by humans
D. know more about the complex "tree societies"
34. The underlined word "it" in the last paragraph refers to __ ______.
A. how young trees survive
B. how trees grow old
C. how forestry industry develops
D. how "tree societies" work
35. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. Trees Are Smarter Than You Think
B. Young Trees Are in Need of Protection
C. Old Trees Communicate Like Humans
D. Trees Contribute to Our Society
第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

选项中有两项为多余选项。

Not only is the English vocabulary huge, it is also full of words that mean practically the same thing. Get, obtain, acquire. Sh ine, gleam, glow, sparkle. 36
That was the thinking of a British writer named C.K. Ogden, w ho in the 1930s promoted a new form of English with a vocab ulary of just 850 words. He called the project Basic English.
37
Ogden arrived at his 850-
word list through experimentation. The words he finally includ ed were not necessarily the shortest or most concrete. 38 B ecause any verbal idea could be expressed with a small num ber of “operators”— words like come, go, take, have, make, b e and do— Ogden argued that most verbs were unnecessary. In Basic English, eat is “have a meal” and forget is “go from
memory.”
Winston Churchill was a fan of the concept as a way to get for eigners to speak English, and he encouraged the BBC to use it. 39 Roosevelt, who expressed mild interest, joked that Ch urchill’s famous speech about offering his “blood, toil, tears an d sweat” to his country wouldn’t have been so exciting if he “h ad been able to offer the British people only blood, work, eye water and face water, which I understand is the best that Basi
c English can do with five famous words.”
40 Churchill didn’t use it either. When seeking to express o urselves, we don’t necessarily need fewer words; we need the right words. So it’s our benefit to have a large supply of word s on hand.
A. He also tried to persuade President Franklin Roosevelt to p romote it.
B. Ogden himself didn’t actually use Basic English.
C. Plenty of seeming basic words did not make the list at all.
D. How many words are there in English?
E. He believed it would make the language more efficient and easier to learn.
F. Do we really need them all?
G. Despite attention from world leaders, Basic English never
got as far as expected.

Isabelle's body is unable to produce health y red blood cells. As a result, Isabelle has been receiving blood transfusions (输血) every 4-6 weeks since she was 11 months old. A lifetime of regular transfusions can lead to serious medical problems. Her only chance at a normal, healthy life is to have a marrow transplant. I sabelle is an only child, so doctors have started a search for an unrelated marrow donor thro ugh the Be The Match Registry. The Mirzaei family asks that you consider helping patients lik e Isabelle by registering to be a marrow donor and give the gift of life, the gift of blood.

Fifteen years ago, I took a summer vacation in Lecce in southern Italy. After climbing up a hill for a panoramic(全景
的) view of the blue sea, white buildings and green olive trees, I paused to catch my breath a nd then positioned myself to take the best photo of this panorama.
Unfortunately, just as I took out my camera, a woman approached from behind, and planted herself right in front of my view. Like me, this woman was here to stop, sigh and appreciate t
he view.
Patient as I was, after about 15 minutes, my camera scanning the sun and reviewing the shot I would eventually take, I grew frustrated. Was it too much to ask her to move so I could take just one picture of the landscape? Sure, I could have asked her, but something prevented m e from doing so. She seemed so content in her observation. I didn’t want to mess with that.
Another 15 minutes passed and I grew bored. The woman was still there. I decided to take th e photo anyway. And now when I look at it, I think her presence in the photo is what makes t he image interesting. The landscape, beautiful on its own, somehow comes to life and breath es because this woman is engaging with it.
This photo, with the unique beauty that unfolded before me and that woman who “ruined” it, n ow hangs on a wall in my bedroom. What would she think if she knew that her figure is captu red(捕
捉) and frozen on some stranger’s bedroom wall? A bedroom, after all, is a very private spac e, in which some woman I don’t even know has been immortalized(使…永
存). In some ways, she lives in my house.
Perhaps we all live in each others’ spaces. Perhaps this is what photos are for : to remind us that we all appreciate beauty, that we all share a common desire for pleasure, for connection, for something that is greater than us.
That photo is a reminder, a captured moment, an unspoken conversation between two wome n, separated only by a thin square of glass.
