2023年初中英语二轮复习特训:记叙文的阅读理解(20道题)1.
Some people were inside a hotel during the terrible rainstorm earlier this week. A
21-year-old worker was regarded as their hero. He was a college student who worked
part-time there.
Satchel Smith was supposed to work at the front desk in the hotel. After his father drove him for work on Wednesday, he expected to work for eight hours before going home later that evening.
The terrible storm spread through the area and flooded many of the roads and highways. Satchel was now the only worker who was serving the hotel with 90 guests trapped(陷入困境)inside and he faced the challenge bravely.
Angela Chandler was one of the guests staying at the hotel under Satchel’s care. She took a photo of Satchel and posted it on Facebook to praise him for his hard work.
“Satchel has been here all night,” She wrote. “His co-workers couldn’t show up until the storm stopped. He answers each of our questions patiently. He makes sure we have had a hot cup of coffee or tea, and helps serve us a hot breakfast. He has dealt with this work with kindness. The smile he wears brings us warmth and our worries gradually disappear.”
For 36 hours, Satchel was the hotel manager and cook. Luckily, he was not completely alone in his work. The guests pulled together to help him serve the meals and wash the dishes. Other guests even volunteered to help and bring clean water and food to the truck drivers trapped nearby.
“The guests were very helpful,” he told CNN. “We’re like a big family.”

One day last January, 15 of my students prepared to lock their smart phones in a box and stop all Internet use for the next two weeks. This marked the start of a course I taught. During the rest of the school year, I teach high school chemistry, but this mini-course gave my students and me a chance to study the role of technology in our lives.
Over the next few days, most students felt anxious. Without their phones, they weren’t sure what to do when there was nothing to do. That’s when it hit me: I long for(渴望)the kind of time alone with my thoughts that my students feared. I use these moments to replay a difficult conversation until I know where it went wrong, imagine myself living in another country, and consider how I will feel when my parents pass away. I look at a person sitting nearby and invent the story of her life.
As we closed in on the final days of the course, I noticed all the kids changed a lot. They were no longer anxious and began to talk about the beauty of time slowing down. They went for walks, created music, and played games with younger sisters and brothers. They experienced life in the moment.
On the last day, when I returned the phones, I expected the kids to turn on their phones
immediately and go straight to social media. Instead, many of them left the classroom with screens still dark, saying they wanted to see how long they could wait.
I know the pull of smart phones and the Internet is strong, but I’m hoping the short break from social media has shown my students that they have a choice in what to do in their downtime, while they’re waiting in line for coffee or walking home. I hope they use the valuable chance to daydream.

There’s an unwritten rule among documentary film-makers-to watch, but not
intervene(干涉). But a BBC documentary worker in Antarctica made a hard decision.
In one of the Dynasties series, mother penguins can be seen leaving babies behind when they can’t get out from the ravine(深沟). Some babies died from the freezing low temperatures.
After a storm, the workers returned to the area and decided to do something. They built a ramp (斜坡) to help the remaining penguins climb to safety.
“We chose to intervene with the least influence,” said the shows director, Will Lawson. “Once we’d dug the little ramp, we left it to the birds. We were excited when they used it.”
“It’s very rare for the film workers to intervene,” he said. “But they realize that they might be able to save some of these birds simply by digging a few steps in the ice.”
“It’s such an unusual condition to do this,” he added. “It wasn’t dangerous. You weren’t touching the animals and by doing this, they had the chance to get out of the trouble.”15.What difficulties did the emperor penguins meet?

Malaria has been a big problem for humans since ancient times. Usually, people get malaria when infected mosquitoes bite them. Countless people have died from the disease. Luckily, Chinese scientist Tu Youyou found an effective drug called qinghaosu.
In 1969, Tu became the director of a national project to develop a drug for malaria. Her team took a special approach. They studied books about classical Chinese medicine. After reading more than 2,000 old remedies (药方), Tu and her team collected over 600 plants and listed almost 380 possible remedies for malaria.
One remedy, which is 1,600 years old, uses sweet wormwood as a treatment. Tu found it worked and tried to extract (提取) the qinghaosu from it to make a drug. The extraction failed at first, so Tu returned to the classical books again and finally found a way. She used a
low-temperature method to extract the qinghaosu and finally succeeded in 1972.
After her team showed that qinghaosu could treat malaria in mice and monkeys, Tu and two of her coworkers decided to test the drug on themselves before trying it on human patients. It turned out that qinghaosu was safe, and all patients in the test got better. Gradually, qinghaosu became the first-line treatment for malaria recommended by WHO, saving millions of lives around the world.

Kat woke up feeling upset on the morning of School Picture Day, though it was usually a day that she loved. She thought it was cool to wear something besides the boring school uniform. Today, however, Kat felt disappointed as she looked at the dress that her mother had prepared for her.
Kat put on the dress and looked at herself in the mirror (镜子). “I don’t want to wear this dress,” Kat said to herself. Suddenly, she had an idea. She went to her brother Charles’s room, slowly pushing open the door and looking inside to make sure he wasn’t there. “Hmm, we’re about the same size.” Kat said quietly as she opened Charles’s closet (衣橱).
“Kat! Breakfast!” her mother called. Kat went to the kitchen in a blue suit.

“Your tie is really cool, too.” added Tyrone.
Kat felt a sense of relief (如释重负) and said, “Thanks!”

Excellent people must have both talent and virtue (德行). If a person has virtue but no talent, he or she might work inefficiently (低效地). If a person has talent but no virtue, he or she might go in the wrong direction. Those who have both talent and virtue were called xiancai in ancient times. There is a story about them in the book Comprehensive Mirror for Aid in Government by Chinese historian Sima Guang.
Zhi Xuanzi was the head of Zhi, a big family of Jin during the late Spring and Autumn
Period. He wanted to make one of his sons, Zhi Yao, to be the head of the family, who was considered the most excellent man in the family.
However, a wise man in the family, named Zhi Guo, was against the idea. When he heard the news, he went to Zhi Xuanzi’s house and said to him, “Zhi Yao is good at many things. For example, he is a good rider and shooter. He is decisive (果断的) and talkative. But he has a big weakness—he doesn’t have a kind heart. Without it, he may envy other people’s talent and do horrible things. Our family will be in danger.”
Zhi Xuanzi didn’t change his mind and finally Zhi Yao became the head of the family. With his leadership abilities, he quickly made the Zhi family the strongest in Jin. However, because of his aggressive style, three other families worked together to fight against the Zhi family. Finally, the Zhi family was beaten.
Sima Guang used this story to show how important virtue is. Talent is important, but if you ask which one is more important between talent and virtue, the story of Zhi family has given you the answer.
In 2023, when President Xi talked with students and teachers at Peking University, he mentioned Sima Cuang’s idea.

In some villages, traders told him that they could sell more local products to make more money—thanks to the growing

A few years ago, a friend gave me a restaurant gift card, and I picked a sunny Sunday afternoon to use it. The meal was delicious, and my family and I all had a great time together.
The gift card covered almost all of the check(账单). After finishing the meal, I reached into my wallet to get enough cash to cover the rest. I saw two bills(钞票) inside my wallet. The first would just cover the rest of the check. The second would allow me to cover the check and give the waitress a nice tip(小费). I reached down and planned to pick the first one.
At that moment, my mind flashed back to 30 years ago. At that time, I was working as a busboy(餐厅勤杂工) in a restaurant. I had to work long hours for low pay. I remembered seeing the waitresses worrying about how they were going to pay the rent. I remembered the pain in their eyes and the sadness on their faces at the end of each month. I blinked(眨眼睛) to hide my sadness and smiled to the waitress, pushing the smaller bill back down. Then I picked out the larger bill. I folded it around the gift card and covered both of them with the。
