2017-2018学年人教版高二英语暑假作业(25)
一、阅读理解
1. When Chris moved in across the hall from Norma Cook four years ago in a Los Angeles-area apartment complex, the 31-year-old actor waved to his 85-year-old neighbor for a few weeks before finally knocking on her door and introducing himself.
“The day I enter her apartment and spoke with her face to face was the day my life was changed forever,”Chris says.
He learned that Cook had no family living in California and that she suffered from a long list of illnesses, including leukemia (白血病).The pair quickly became close friends, as Chris took her to doctor’s appointments, cooked with her and they ran errands together. He shared their adventures on social media.
But recently, Cook’s health declined and she was in and out of the hospital several times. She once spent weeks in the hospital fighting pneumonia (肺炎)and breathing issues. Eventually Cook was told by one of her doctors that she could no longer live at home unless she had 24-hour care. Because Cook had no money saved to pay her health care costs, Chris started a GoFundMe account to help cover her bills.
But caretakers are expensive and Cook quickly went through the $34,445 they raised. Knowing her days at home were limited, Chris invited Cook to move in with him to save money.
“She loves it! I do most of my work at home so I am here most of the time to care for her. It only made sense to both of us, ” Chris wrote. “She is my adopted grandmother after all and I am her grandson she never had.”
“Cook st ill has weekly hospice health care visits and regular visits from caregivers, so any funds raised cover those expenses,”he wrote.
Though doctors say Cook’s days are very limited, the pair are enjoying spending time together drinking champagne and snuggling with her cat, Hermes, who also made the move.
“She does not want to change, ”Chris told Today. “My apartment was the only place she would have moved. She has strong opinions about where she wants to carry out the rest of her days, and she wants to stay here. ”
Chris says he feels like the relationship was fate. “Moving her in....it feels as though it was meant to be all along, ” he said. “It’s really fulfilling (有成就感的)to be there for her.”

She makes and delivers free cupcakes to the elderly, and a story she wrote was published in Stone Soup, an international kids’ magazine! Through all of her hard work she was even named a Discovery Girl’s example!
Cameron first started raising butterflies when her mother let her get her own butterfly growing kit(设备). After mailing in for the butterflies, Cameron received five black caterpillars(毛虫).
One of Cameron’s favorite parts about raising her butterflies was decorating the bottom of the cage with flower petals(花瓣) and freshly sliced ora nges so the butterflies could eat. “For anyone wanting to attract their own butterflies, he can attract butterflies by planting herbs, flowers, and trees such as wild cherry, willow, maple, alder, birch, gooseberry, currant, wild rhododendron and cabbage. Each flower and plant attracts its own butterflies,” Cameron says.
Over the last six months Cameron has raised over seventy butterflies. Her love for and experience with nature helped her become the new Butterfly Caretaker. Right now the butterfly house is being built. “I look forward to the day the new caterpillars arrive, so then there will be butterflies once again in the house,” Cameron said excitedly. “I am also looking forward to leading tourists in the butterfly house, to teaching young children how they can be butterfly protectors and growers.”
She also has a love of science. And the coolest thing is that she is using her knowledge of science to make fun educational videos for others. Cameron’s first science video was made for a contest on Discovery Kids.

3. Native to America, the cane toad (癞蛤蟆) was introduced to Northern Queensland 70 years ago to control sugarcane beetles (甘蔗害虫). The toads failed in that duty but spread across Queensland and into neighboring northern areas.
Now it calmly invades(侵略) the stats of Western Australia and New South Wales ( NSW). NSW wildlife experts fear the amphibians - which have poisonous backs that kill hungry predators (食肉动物) 一will have a terrible effect on native animals.
Those fears may be about to be realized. Australia’s leading government research body, the Commonwealth Science and Industry Research Organization (CSIRO), forecasts that a rise in average temperatures will make NSW an ideal living place for the cane toads.
Tony Robinson, head of CSIRO’s Wildlife, Pests, and Disease s Program, said climate change is increasing the amount of suitable living place for the cane toads.
“With climate change, the cane toads might go down as far as Sydney and some areas of Western Australia,” Robinson said.
Recent estimates put the pace of the toads’ westward march at nearly 17 miles (27 kilometers) a year and slightly slower from north to south.
“More southerly (南部的) cities, such as Melbourne and Adelaide, would likely remain too cold and dry to ever suit the toads,” Robinson noted, “but Perth could expect cane toads in five years’ time.”
Sydney could see their arrival in the next 20 years.
Robinson said there is no method that will keep the toads under control.
The cane toads already cover at least half of Queensland and most of the northern country. The toads are believed to number in the billions.
A Venezuelan virus was tried in the 1990s but had to be given up after it was found to also kill native frog species. Scientists and governmental bodies believe a national approach is needed.
The main threat the toads cause to species such as dingoes, and crocodiles is the poison contained in glands (腺) on each of their shoulders. The poison sprays out when the toads are threatened or handled roughly. The poison is made up of 14 different chemicals.
Cane toads also compete, and usually win, the hunt for food and living space.
"”If the government and other states combine resources, I believe we can achieve a very practical biological-control research program,” Bum s said.

4. We tend to think of plants as the furniture of the natural world. They don’t move, they don’t make sounds, they don’t seem to respond to anything –at least not very quickly. But as is often the case, our human’s view of the world misses quite a lot. Plants talk to each other all the time. And the language is chemical.
Over the years scientists have reported that different types of plants, from trees to tomatoes, release compounds(化合物)into the air to help neighboring plants. These chemical warnings all have the same purpose –to spread information about one plant’s disease or infestation so other plants can defend themselves. But exactly how plants receive and act on many of these signals is still mysterious.
In this week’s Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers in Japan offered some explanations. They had identified one chemical message and traced it all the way from release to action.
The scientists looked at tomato plants infested by a common pest, the cutworm. The researchers studied leaves from exposed and unexposed plants. They found one compound showed up more often in the exposed plants. The substance is called Hex Vic. When the scientists fed Hex Vic to cutworms, it knocked down their survival rate by 17%. The scientists identified the source of Hex Vic, and sprayed it lightly over healthy plants. Those plants were then able to start producing the cutworm-killing Hex Vic. Researchers confirmed that uninfested plants have to build their own weapon to fight off bugs and diseases. How do they know when to play defense? They are warned first by their friendly plant neighbors.
It is a complex tale, and it may be happening in more plant species than tomatoes. It may also be happening with more chemical signals that are still unknown to us. For now though, we know that plants not only communicate, they look out for one another.
1.What does the author try to emphasize in Paragraph 1?
A.How plants communicate is still a mystery.
B.Enough attention has been paid to plant talk.

A.how plants receive and handle the signals from their neighbors
B.why plants spread chemical information to their neighbor
C.how many types of plants release compounds into the air
D.whether plants send chemical warnings to their neighbors
3.The experiment shows that the infested plant helps its neighbors by ______.
A.making more Hex Vic to attract the pest
B.releasing Hex Vic into the air to warn them
C.letting them know how to produce Hex Vic
D.producing enough Hex Vic to kill the pest
4.What may be the best title for the passage?
A.Survival of Plants
B.Plant World
C.Talking Plants
D.Plant Bug Killer
