Thisteachingperiodmainlydealswiththegrammar:thesubjunctivemood.IntheEnglishlanguageverbsareofte ndividedintothreedifferentmoods—theindicativemood,theimperativemoodandthesubjunctivemood.Theindicativ emoodisusedtoindicateafactorputforwardaviewpoint.Th eimperativemoodisusedtoexpressdirectcommandsorreque sts.Ittellsyoutodosomething.Itisalsousedtosignalapr ohibition,permissionoranyotherkindofexhortation.Thesubjunctiv emoodisusedtoexpressaconditionwhichisdoubtfulornotf actual.Itismostoftenfoundinaclausebeginningwiththew ord“if”.Itisalsofoundinnounclauses,followingaverbthatexpressesadoubt,awish,regret,request,demand,orproposal.Thefollowingareverbstypicallyfollowedbyc lauseswiththesubjunctivemood:ask,demand,determine,
insist,move,order,prefer,recommend,regret,request,require,suggest,wish.
Inthisperiodwewillfocusononlypartoftheusagesofthesu bjunctivemood,thatis,thesubjunctivemoodbeginningwiththeword“if”andthatfollowingtheverb“wish”.
