I’m lucky to have some wonderful teache rs. One who stands out for me is Blanche Caffiere, a kind librarian(图书馆理员) and teacher I first met when I was in the fourth grade. Mrs. Caffiere died in 2006. Before she passed away, I thanked her for the important role she played in my life.
When I first met Mrs. Caffiere, she was a beautiful librarian who worked in View Ridge Elementary, and I was a shy fourth grader. I was trying to go unnoticed, because I couldn’t write a good hand and keep my desk clean and tidy. I was also trying to hide the fact that I liked reading. That thing was cool for girls but not for boys.
Mrs. Caffiere helped make it okay for me to be myself. She shared her love of books with me. At the same time, she started asking questions like, “What do you like to read?” and “What are yo u interested in?”. Then she gave me a lot of books—biographies (人物传记), for example—that were more difficult than the books I was reading at the time. After I read them, she would discuss them with me. She seriously listened to what I had to say. Through those book conversations in the library and in the classroom, we became good friends.
Looking back on it now, there’s no question like my time with Mrs. Caffiere helped excite my interest in libraries. That time has also made me want to help every child in A merica. It’s important to learn how much power (力量) one good person can have in shaping the life of a child.
