15、A tree is a plant with a tall woody trunk. Like all plants, trees need air, water and sunlight to live and grow.
A tree has a long, woody trunk covered in bark (树皮). The trunk supports the branches, lifting them high above the ground. Bark is dead and protects the living trunk inside. The trunk grows thicker and taller each year.
Trees have many branches. Tree branches spread out in all directions towards sunlight. More and more branches grow each year.
Leaves grow on the branches. The leaves cover t he tree in a canopy of green. Leaves use the sun’s energy to make food for the whole tree.
The tree has roots under the ground. Roots absorb water and nutrients from the soil. Trees need water to live and grow. The roots also hold the tree firm when the wind blows.
In cold climates most broadleaf trees lose their leaves in winter. The short cold days cause the leaves fall. Trees that lose their leaves in winter are called deciduous trees.
In spring, as the weather warms up, the tree buds and new leaves grow. The tree may also flower. In summer, the tree grows. A green covering of leaves provides food for the whole tree. In autumn, as the weather begins to cool and the days grow shorter, the food moves from the leaves to the trunk and roots. Leaves lose their green colour and become dry. When the leaves are dead, they fall from the tree. During winter a deciduous tree stops growing. The tree is still alive. It is waiting for warm temperatures before it starts to grow again.
Many animals live in trees. Trees provide food and shelter for monkeys, squirrels, birds and insects.
Most monkeys find food and shelter in trees. They can also escape from land-based predators to their homes above the ground. Monkeys are well-adapted to life in the trees. Their tails help them to climb and jump from branch to branch. Many small mammals live in trees. Trees provide shelter from wind, rain and other animal.
Many birds live their lives in trees. They build their nests in the branches or hollows of trees. Trees provide fruit, nectar and seeds for birds to eat.

18、Empathy(同情心) lets us feel another person’s pain and drives us to help. Do any other animals feel empathy? Scientists recently found that rats(老鼠) do, too.
Most people don’t like rats. In many people’s eyes, rats are only bad. But Jean Decety and his partners at the University of Chicago did an experiment. It showed that rats are kind, warm-hearted animals. They can feel each other’s pain. Scientists placed pairs of rats in plastic cages(笼子) for two weeks. During this time they got to know each other. Then they put one of the rats from each pair into a small container(容器) in the cages. The small container had a door. It was so designed as to fall to the side when the free rat touched it. Many of the trapped(困住的) rats squeaked(吱吱叫) to show their discomfort. The other rats of the pairs could see their_____friends clearly.
In most pairs, the free rats would become very worried about their friends. They kept trying to save their friends again and again throughout the month. Scientists put the rats’ favorite chocolate in the cages, but the rats didn’t eat it until they had saved their friends successfully. Scientists also found that female rats seemed to act more empathetic than male rats.
“The results are the first to show that rats take action in response to another’s trouble,” Decety said. “Monkeys and chimpanzees have similar behavior. But unlike those animals, rats can be ready used in laboratory studies. They will help us to learn which parts of the brain lead to empathy and helping behavior and whether empathy is natural.”

19、Hi, Jack! I am Tim. Today I will tel l you something about the project “Renovation of the old communities” in Nanjing. This project is aim to improve the environment. After this project, there will be more beautiful buildings, some parks and a big shopping store. Our life will be more convenient. But there are some problems which influence our life. For example, lots of noise is around us all day long, and we can see the building rubbish anywhere. In my opinion, the project team only work in daytime and the building rubbish can be put at a fixed place. Of course, everyone in the old communities can do what they can do to renovate our communities.。
