Where doyou usually put your toothbrush?Do you keep it in the bathroom? How’s your toothbrush looking these days? Even if you can’t see it with a naked eye, experts say it may be saturated(使饱和)with millions of toilet germs!
Dr. Charles Oerba, a germ expert, is amicrobiology professor at the University of Arizona. He says there are approximately 3 million bacteria per square inch in most toilet bowls, and every time you flush it without closing the lid, those millions of bacteria droplets spray into the air as far as twenty feet away and dirty everything in their path. And a common victim is your poor toothbrush, usually, left out on the bathroom sink, right?
So, what do we do? Dr. Gerba says it’s easy. Close the toilet lid before you flush—that’ll greatly cut downthe germs, which will otherwise float in the air. And wash your toothbrush every few days in mouthwash or peroxide to get rid of any germs hiding in it. You can even put it through the dishwasher to sanitize(消毒)it. And always store your toothbrush in a closed cabinet.
Here’s one more tip from Dr. Gerba, who says our kitchen sink is probably dirtier than our toilet. “If an alien came from space and studied the bacterial counts, he probably would conclude he should wash his hands in your toilet and go to the bathroom in your sink.” He says that’s because the kitchen sink is a great place where E. coli(大肠杆菌)to live and grow since it’s wet and damp. Bacteria feed on the food that people put down the drain or—that’s left on dishes in the sink. To reset your sink’s bacteria count back to zero, you’d better regularly wash it with hot water and sanitize yoursink with special chemicals. In fact, you may want to do it every day or before preparing dinner.

A trip to thelibrary was like a great journey to a different country. To get there, we had to walk a mile. But our weekly journeys to the library were a piece of perfection. I had around me at one time all the people I loved best-my father and mother and brothers and sister--and all the things I loved best- quiet, space and books.
I read a lot of books about science: not the spaceships my brothers preferred, but the birds and the bees--literally. I brought home a book of birds and searched the trees for anything other than robins (知更鸟). I went through a phrase of loving books with practical science experiments and used up a whole bottle of white vinegar by pouring it on the sides of our apartment building to prove that it was constructed of limestone (石灰石).
One Saturday, as I wandered through the young adult section, I saw a title: Little Women, by Lousia May Alcott. I had learned from experience that titles weren’t everything. A book that sounded great on the shelf could be dull once you got it home. So I sat in a chair near the shelves to skim the first paragraphs.
I read and read and read Little Women until it was time to walk home, and, except for a few essential interruptions like sleeping and eating, I did not put it down until the end. Even the freedom to watch weekend television held no appeal for me in the wake of Alcott' s story. It was about girls, for one thing, girls who could almost be like me, especially Jo. I had found someone who thought and felt the way I did.

B. How she conducted science experiments.
C. Why she loved books about the birds and the bees.
D. Her reading interests during a particular period of time.
10. What opinion does the author hold on books?
A. Book titles can sometimes be misleading.
B. Science books are as interesting as novels.
C. The first few paragraphs of a book are attractive.
D. Books seem duller when read in libraries than at home.
11. How would the author describe Little Women?
A. It helped her to discover her true character.
B. It made her forget about food and sleep.
C. It inspired confidence in her.
D. It kept her absorbed.
D
The cumulative rainfall in Henan province during the four days was the highest since the province has records, the provincial meteorological service said. The rain was heaviest in the provincial capital, Zhengzhou, for a short period on Monday and Tuesday. Northern, western and central parts of Henan also experienced downpours, the service said. Zhengzhou's biggest one-hour precipitation (降水量) —201.9 mmbetween 4 and 5 pm on Tuesday—was also the highest on the Chinese mainland. The previous record was 198.5 mmin the village of Linzhuang in Zhumadian in August 1975, the National Meteorological Center said. The city's precipitation duringthe four days exceeded that of its average annual precipitation, the center said.
Chen Tao, chief forecaster at the National Meteorological Center, said abundant water vapor (水蒸气) brought by Typhoon In-Fa and the province's special geographical features led to Henan's rain. “Partly affected by the typhoon, large amounts of water vapor have been transported to China's inland areas, including Henan,” he said.
From Thursday to Monday, rain was forecast to continue in Henan. However, rainfall will gradually subside in Zhengzhou and the province's northern and central regions, though the storms will increase the risk of mountain torrents and other geological disasters. By Monday, lighter rain is forecast for parts of Henan, the provincial weather service said. However, local authorities are still urged to bevigilantand prepare to prevent or cope with flooding and other possible disasters.
Predicting such weather events remains a challenge worldwide because it involves many meteorological phenomena, the center said. “The formation of this kind of extreme weather, including rainstorms and high temperatures, is complex,” Chen said. “We still lack effective solutions and methods for such forecasting”, he said. “We are now putting a lot of effort into tackling the difficulty. We believe that as the technology improves, we can better forecast the events.”
12. What message does the author mainly want to convey in the first paragraph?
A. heavy rain fell in Zhengzhou.
B. The rain in Henan lasted four days.
C. Zhumadian also suffered the similar heavy rain.
D. Henan experienced the biggest rainfall of all time.
13. What can be indicated from Chen Tao's words?
A. It is not easy to forecast the extreme weather.
B The rain of Henan is mainly caused by Typhoon In-Fa.
C. The center hasn't put a lot of effort into solving the problem.
D. Rainstorms and high temperatures can account for the heavy rain.
14. What does the underlined word “vigilant” probably mean?
A. Relaxed.
B. Alert.
C. Reluctant.
D. Communicative.
15. Where might the text be most probably taken from?

选项中有两项为多余选项Many people, college students included, aren’t fully aware of the difference between a college and a university. In fact, while the names are used interchangeably(互换地), they often refer to completely different school programs.___16___
A common concept is that colleges are private while universities are public. This is not what distinguishes the two. Instead, it is quite often the difference in the level ofdegree programs offered.___17___While a four-year college may offer Bachelor’s degree, many community and junior colleges only offer two-year or Associate’s degrees. Most universities, on the other hand, offer both undergraduate and graduate degrees.
___18___This is a natural result of the limited degree programs they offer. Universities, however, include graduate studies, and more students attend these schools at one time and more staff is required to handle the
students’ needs.___19___This leads to a more diverse student population with a wider range of interests and studies.
Eventually, you need to decide what field of study you want to choose, and let that guide your decision about what institution of higher learning you attend (if any). If you’re trying to decide between two similar schools, it’s good to consider your own learning style.___20___But if a diverse student body and a possible graduate degree are on your must-have list, then a university might be the way to go.
A. In most cases, colleges have a smaller student body and staff.
B. If you want smaller class sizes, a college may be your best option.
C. Students could get two different degrees without changing schools.
D. Generally, colleges only offer and focus on undergraduate programs.
