备战2020年高考外刊精读与练习专题9(教案)Why take a gap year?

Step 1 Vocabulary 词汇表employment and education 词汇:就业和教育recharge your batteries 休整,恢复体力let your hair down 放松,享受further education 继续教育gap year 休学年,空当年academic life 学术生涯productive 富有成效的purposeful 有明确目标的work experience 工作经验charity work 公益劳动employable 有资格任职的,具备受雇条件的practical 有实际经验的alien concept 外星人的概念,迥异的概念burn a hole in sb’s pocket 口袋里留不住钱,一有钱就想花volunteer 无偿做义工confidence 信心independence 独立,自主craft 技术contemplate 沉思,盘算Step 2 Reading and understandingWhen you’ve finished your studies at school and college, do you feel like a well-earned rest? If you’re about to embark on a course at university, you’ll want to recharge your batteries, let your hair down and have some fun. But how long should you do that for? Now the idea of taking a year off before you move into further education seems to be the thing to do.A year off – also called a gap year –is not a new concept, but there’s now a focus on making the most of this break from academic life. Long gone are the days of just hanging out on a beach or backpacking round the world. While that is still an option, a gap year is now more about gaining skills that will help you in later life. The BBC’s Smart Consumer podcast spoke to a student called Meg, who said “I just always had in the back of my mind I'd spend a year doing something productive and something that would just be goo d fun.”Doing something productive is exactly what students are being encouraged to do because doing more purposeful things like work experience or charity work helps them acquire skills to use when competing for a place at university. It looks good on their CV and ultimately makes them more employable. Chris Rea is a Higher Education Services Manager from organization, Prospects. He told the BBC that he thinks “the experience of the gap year has become actually much more practical, partly to do with university participation increasing, but also because of the demands on developing skills, specifically employability skills.”While the benefits of taking a gap year are clear to see, some students worry they can’t afford it. Another student, Tom, told the BBC that to him, a gap year was an ‘alien concept’. He said “it would have been far too expensive and it's not something that I would have been able to rely on my parents or family members for.” But some experts say that it needn’t burn a hole in your pocket; you don’t need to travel far and you can even earn money by doing paid work. For those who do have the funds, a combination of working, volunteering and travelling is undoubtedly an amazing opportunity. It increases confidence and independence, gives you a chance to learn new crafts, and gives you time to contemplate whether university is right for you.Step 3 PracticingTask 1Answer the following questions according to the passage.1. What does taking a gap year usually involve having a break from?A gap year usually involves taking a break from academic life – often, but not always between college and starting university.2. Give an example of something in the article that might make you more employable.Doing work experience, volunteering or charity work can teach you skills that will make you more employable.3. Why might taking a gap year not necessarily cost you a lot of money? Some experts say taking a gap year needn’t burn a hole in your pocket; you don’t need travel far and you can even earn money by doing paid work.4. True or false: You can choose not to go to university after taking a gap year.True. Taking a year out gives you time to contemplate whether university is right for you.5. How new is the idea of taking a gap year?A year off – also called a gap year –is not a new concept but there’s now a focus on making the most of this break from academic life.Task 2 Choose the best answer according to your understanding or the passage.

Step 2 Reading and understandingHappy, angry, amazed– these are some of the emotions we like to express these days when we're sending a message on our smartphones! That's why many of us now add little pictures to our texts to brighten up someones mobile screen but we're also using them as a quick way of telling someone how we're feeling. Yes,emojis have become a vital tool for communication.Let's clear one thing up first – there are emojis and emoticons. The latter are little images made using normal keys on a keyboard. For example, a colon, two dots, followed by the curved line of a close brackets is a 'smiley face'. But as technology has become more sophisticated, pre-made images have been created that can be simply added to your messages, which is great! The emoji was first invented in Japan in the late 1990s and the word 'emoji' comes from the Japanese words for 'picture' and 'character'. The number of different images has dramatically increased since then and now we have a picture for every mood or situation. So now we have the option to give this new creation the visual 'thumbs-up' but have you thought (puzzled face) why we've become so addicted to using emojis? Professor Vyv Evans, has written a book called ‘The Emoji Code’ – he says "increasingly, what we’re finding is that digital communication is taking over from certain aspects of face-to-face interaction… one of the reasons emojis are so interesting is that they really do enable us to express our emotional selves much more effectively." So emojis are a sort of substitute for the visual signals or non-verbal cues we normally give when we speak to someone face-to-face.Another advantage of emojis is that they are an international language – they don't use words but tell a message in pictorial form so they can be easily interpreted whatever your native language. However, the emojis you send need some thought as they can sometimes be misinterpreted – if a friend sends you an emoji of a hammer, you may think he is angry when really he is saying he has hurt himself or he is clumsy!Emojis are a good way for showing empathy– they are a virtual hug or a flirtatious tease. But as linguist Neil Cohn says, "to many, emoji are an exciting evolution of the way we communicate; to others, they are linguistic Armageddon." It does show there is a lot more to our communication than words alone but does this mean the decline in traditional writing?

Can AI save us from bad meetings?

Step 1 Vocabulary 词汇表badly managed 管理糟糕的,无序的unproductive 无效的,收益很小的a complete waste of time 完全浪费时间attend 参加hijack 控制,把持(不属于其本人的东西)circular discussion 巡回无效的讨论videoconference 可视会议wrap up 结束,画上句号strategy 策略vision (企业)愿景minute taker 会议记录员transcribe 记录下summarise 总结,概述attendee 参加者presentation 报告,演讲agenda 会议议程meeting invitation 会议邀请the minutes 会议记录action item 行动方案business meetings 商务会议Step 2 Reading and understandingBusiness meetings are, arguably, a necessary part of any organisation where people work collectively to accomplish a goal. But badly managed, meetings can be unproductive, boring and feel like a complete waste of time. In a recent survey conducted by governance technology firm eShare, it was found that the average UK employee spends over 10 hours weekly preparing for and attending meetings – approximately 50% of which they consider unnecessary. However, there are theories that technology could improve things. It's "very feasible" for an AI to be able to recognise when one person is hijacking a meeting, or if a circular discussion keeps returning to a single issue, says James Campanini, from videoconferencing company, BlueJeans. "If no new points are made after a while, the AI could suggest to wrap up," says Cynthia Rudin, a computer science professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. But AI isn’t quite there yet."If AI can do most of the mundane and drudgery work during business meetings, that leaves more space for humans to think about strategy and vision," believes Niki Iliadis at the Big Innovation centre, London, an innovation hub in AI. This seems to be true. The prefecture of Osaka in Japan started using an AI as a minute taker to transcribe and summarise the 450 annual cabinet meetings. It has halved the time needed to produce summaries and cut staff overtime, claims the prefecture.AI can also help with the matter of attendance. If a meeting with irrelevant subject matter is called, or if it's an inconvenient time, an AI could be used to decide who should attend the meeting and when it should be, says Elise Keith from Lucid Meetings, a US-based meeting management platform. Finally, one Stockholm start-up, Mentimeter, allows meeting attendees to give anonymous feedback about a discussion. Using the software, participants can make open-ended responses, submit comments or vote in multiple-choice quizzes. This has "fundamentally changed the dynamics of a presentation," says Austin Broad from financial services firm AFH Wealth Management. While tools that can create agendas, send meeting invitations, distribute the minutes, and keep track of action items should improve effectiveness, they are still in development. Let's hope that if or when they do arrive, they will meet our expectations.

Whether a huge mountain range or a local country park, these natural areas are a perfect tonic for our stressed-out lives, and their therapeutic effect is being used more and more to treat mental health. As an example, in the foothills of the Snowdonia National Park in the UK, specialist therapy sessions are held to help people who suffer from depression, anxiety and stress. Outdoor art-related activities are held for patients, but the setting alone has been credited with improving the mood of patients. Art psychotherapist Pamela Stanley told the BBC that there was a "growing body of evidence" to support eco-therapy.It’s true that for most of us connecting with the natural world definitely lifts our spirits. But the mental health charity Mind says eco-therapy has been recognised as a formal type of treatment that can sometimes be prescribed to someone by a doctor. It doesn’t involve taking medication, but instead it just develops a person’s relationship with nature. This natural remedy can take on many forms, but can include doing yoga in a forest, gardening or even hugging a tree.Evidence has shown there are many benefits of this ‘green’ therapy, including improving social contact, social and work skills and coping abilities. It’s what Dr. Rachel Bragg from the University of Essex calls ‘psychological restoration’. She told the BBC’s All in the Mind programme that nature-based therapies should be part of a "toolkit" of care for patients. One reason why getting back to nature is, well, natural, is something called biophilia, a sort of understanding or empathy with the natural world. According to environmental psychologist Birgitta Gatersleben, “the idea that nature reminds us of life, and if we are exposed to the natural elements, then our sort of negative feelings get almost immediately replaced with pos itive emotions.”Of course, eco-therapy won’t cure everything, but it is an option for therapists to use. And as we become more aware of the causes and effects of mental health, it’s good to know that help might lie outside our towns and cities, and that nature can give us a helping hand.

Step 1 Vocabulary 词汇表humankind 人类an alien concept 一个陌生的概念exploration 探索cosmonaut(前苏联的)宇航员push the boundaries 挑战极限,突破极限mission control 航天地面指挥中心spaceflight components 航天组件NASA (National Aeronautics and SpaceAdministration) 美国国家航空航天局mission(航天)任务mathematician 数学家blast off(太空飞船等)发射astronaut 宇航员the Moon 月球set foot 踏上(某地)Mars 火星gender-balanced 性别平衡的NASA Space Vehicle Mock-up Facility 美国航天局飞行器模拟中心out of this world 极好的space 太空Step 2 Reading and understandingThere's no doubt that one of the greatest achievements by humankind is the exploration of space. Ever since cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first person to journey into space in 1961, scientists have been exploring it and pushing the boundaries to try and go further and discover things that are yet to be discovered. But probably the only thing that's certain about this exploration into the unknown so far, is it's been dominated by men.Of course, in the past, women haven't been excluded from space projects. Women have been involved on the ground at mission control – and behind the scenes women have worked as seamstresses, stitching vital spaceflight components. In fact, many of NASA's key missions would never have left the ground without them. And it was a group of black female mathematicians, recently depicted in a Hollywood movie called Hidden Figures, who helped NASA launch an American into space. But this hasn't been women's only contribution. Back in 1963, Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman to blast off into space. However, after that, space flight programmes were slow to employ women. In the USA, NASA didn't accept applications from women to become astronauts until 1978, and as missions to the Moon had ended by then, it meant Neil Armstrong's arrival on the Moon in 1969 was 'a giant step for mankind' – and also an important step for a man.But attitudes have moved on and leading engineers at NASA have said that the first person to set foot on Mars should be a woman. The space agency aims to have a gender-balanced workforce but can only achieve that if equal numbers of men and women train for science and technology careers. As Allison McIntryre, Chief of the NASA Space Vehicle Mock-up Facility, told the BBC: "My director is a women, my former division chief is a woman. We have female astronauts. We haven't put a woman on the Moon yet. And I think that perhaps the first person to step on Mars should be a woman."A woman landing on Mars would be an incredible achievement for being a first for womankind and would, for some, be out of this world! It would certainly inspire a younger female generation by showing what is possible. For them, the thought of other planets being a men-only destination, would be an alien concept.

Step 1 Vocabulary词汇表language and translation 语言和翻译get your tongue round 正确发出…… Step 2 Reading and understandingFor me, it was bacon. There I was, standing in the streets of Medellin, Colombia, looking hungrily at a delicious empanada. The sign read "queso y tocino". Because I'd got my tongue round some essential Spanish vocabulary, I knew that "queso" was cheese. But "tocino"? I typed it into my smartphone translation app. What came back? "Tocino".I later learned that means 'bacon' in the local lingo.Computer-assisted translation is popular. Google Translate, for example, is used by more than 500 million people. But while convenient and easy to use, they are hardly perfect. Now, dropping the odd expression now and again is hardly important on an informal conversational level –as might happen to a tourist on holiday. But in more formal circumstances, such as a medical or legal discussion, the wrong vernacular can be disastrous. So, can a computer translator ever equal a human? The technology has come a long way. These days, people can wear a'translation earpiece'. These pick up the foreign terminology and translate it directly to the wearer. Andrew Ochoa, chief executive of US start-up Waverly Labs, a producer of one such earpiece, says they work by 'combining a network of algorithms and speech-recognition technology'. But they have limitations. Firstly, there's a delay while the phrase is translated. How long often depends on the connectionstrength. Secondly, they aren't able to communicate human sentiment well.Human conversation is subtler than just the words used. It has tone, attitude, nuance, for example. "If you want to create a relationship…you need a human translator to make it sound natural," Zoey Cooper, brand and content director at Wordbank, a global marketing and translation agency, told the BBC.So, while many professional translators do use computer-assisted translation tools to help them with the repetitive nature of translation, context is important. It might work well for a survey or instruction manual, but for important human-to-human speech, and for the time being at least, better to use a translator, or your message might get garbled or lost in translation.

Step 1 Vocabulary 词汇表come up with 想出,提出solution 解决办法spur innovation 激发创新concept 概念innovate 创新(解决方案)solve 解决think outside the box 以新眼光看问题,跳出传统的思维框框tunnel vision 视野狭隘,井底之蛙think tank 智囊团 lateral thinking 横向思维 throw up issues 抛出问题 overlook 忽略,忽视 invention 创造,发明 conceive 构想出 blue -sky thinking “蓝天思考”,不着边际的想法 problem -solver 善于解决问题的人Innovation and problem -solving 创新和解决问题Step 2 Reading and understandingWhat do you do when you have a problem? Do you go to an expert, ask your friends tocome upwith an idea? Or, given the chance, would you ask a crowd of strangers for a solution? It may sound strange, but it has spurred more than a few successful innovations. That’s the thinking behind a 'challenge prize'.Challenge prizes come in many shapes and sizes but the basic concept remains the same. Rather than consulting and paying an expert to innovate a solution, you offer the prize up to anyone who believes they can solve it and present the first to do so with a prize. This might sound odd - many would argue, 'Who is better qualified than an expert?' But actually, not using one seems to result in a great deal of thinking outside of the box. Some argue that formal education can kill creativity because it sometimes only teaches a single solution to a problem or single method to achieve a task. In the same way, some suggest that experts can suffer from tunnel vision. "If we launch an XPRIZE and it's just the 'experts' that come out and compete, they're usually the ones that will tell us it can't be done." says Marcus Shingles, former CEO of the XPRIZE Foundation, which organises challenge prizes today. There are other advantages too. "You're not asking people to use a particular solution set on how to solve that problem. So you get this tremendous amount of diversity." adds Shingles. And because the crowd acts like an impromptu think tank, its lateral thinking can throw up issues that may have been overlooked.Challenge prizes were most popular during the 18th and 19th centuries, but have received renewed interest more recently. Historically, many practical inventions have been conceived in this way – for example, the tin can. More recently, Virgin Galactic, a company hoping to commercialise space flight, developed out of the Ansari XPRIZE 2004 winner Tier One. They successfully launched a reusable spacecraft that left the Earth's atmosphere twice in two weeks. The prize was $10m.However, there are dangers connected to blue-sky thinking. "You don't want to be creating a challenge prize which incentivises people to solve a problem where there is no demand," says Tris Dyson, executive director of challenge prizes at Nesta, a UK-based innovation foundation. This happened in 1979 where a Kremer prize of £100,000 was claimed by the first person to fly under human power across the English Channel. Despite its successful completion, it has not led to the adoption of human-powered flight as a form of travel. And of course, there are those who invest their personal time and money only to see no return at all: someone else claims the prize, or they find that the reward does not match the resources they invested. The pros and cons of challenge prizes affect both problem-setters and problem-solvers. But they don’t seem to be going out of style anytime soon. To many, the challenge to innovate, the lure of the prize and the prestige of being first is too much to resist. And there’s no solution for that.

备战2020年高考 外刊精读与练习(教案)Could robots replace us at work?

Step 2 Reading and understandingIf you’re in a job performing tedious tasks, you might think that a robotcould do the work instead. Butperhaps we underestimate how much technology already helps with the activities that we would otherwise have to do.And as artificial intelligence progresses we might find it replaces us in the workplace altogether. For now, robotic technology is providing a helping hand for businesses, particularly in manufacturing, assisting humans in performing work more efficiently and sometimes more accurately. For online shopping, for example, robots have become essential in giant warehouses. They sort and move millions of objects of all different shapes and sizes, although humans are still needed to pick and distribute the goods. The advancement of robotics in the workplace is good for some businesses; the ones who research, develop, build and use them. The British government estimates that by 2035, artificial intelligence could add around £630bn to the UK economy. But there are still tasks that robots can’t yet do, and that’s the challenge for companies such as Automata. Its co-founder, Suryansh Chandra, told the BBC that his technology will eliminate boring, repetitive jobs that humans don't like and aren't very good at, and also create new ones that are likely to replace them.It seems inevitable that robots will eventually be able to do more and more of the jobs that are currently performed by humans, so should we be worried by the rise of the machines? Some experts fear hundreds of thousands of jobs could disappear as robots replace human workers. A report by the OECD suggests that 14% of jobs are "at high risk of automation" and 32% of jobs could be "radically transformed", with the manufacturing sector at the highest risk. But as complete automation is some way off, for now we’ll have to work side-by-side with our robot colleagues- and manage to get along with them before they learn to kick us out of the door!

Step 2 Reading and understandingWe all love to take photographs. It's a simple way to capture a special moment, an amazing view, or just to show off your artistic skills. And it's great to look back through your photo albums and share your memories with friends. In essence, they show a snapshot in time. This hasn't really changed since the invention of photography in the 1830s. But one thing that has changed, is the equipment we use. For many years, we have used traditional cameras to take our pictures with. Our images were captured onto camera film which was then processed into negatives from which photos were printed –a lengthy process. And we've have had a range of cameras to choose from –from the simple compact camera to more sophisticated single lens reflex, or SLR cameras. But the biggest change has come with the development of digital technology. This has made taking photos quicker and easier. It's enabled us to take a snap and review our pictures instantly. We've been able to manipulate them in post-production, using software on our computer. And of course, we've been able to share them like never before – particularly on social media.Of course, now we have the smartphone –a phone that is, well, smart because it can take photos and sometimes very good quality ones, and we can share them easily. So does that mean the traditional camera will eventually become obsolete? Figures from Japan show how the market is shrinking: shipments of compact digital cameras from companies like Olympus, Canon and Nikon were down 39% year on year. But Phil Hall, editor of Tech Radar magazine thinks there's nothing to worry about. He told the BBC that while people are swapping their compact cameras for smartphones, "manufacturers are looking at the more higher-end premium cameras, high-end compacts, DSLRs, which are the ones you can attach lenses to, mirrorless cameras."Certainly, the growth of the smartphone means more and more of us are taking photos and it opens our eyes to the creative possibilities it can provide. And for some, it can be a first step into getting into serious photography and pushing their creative skills. But whatever camera viewfinder we end up looking through, it's important to remember the basics of focusing, good lighting and framing - and getting your subject to say 'cheese!'Step

Step 1 Vocabulary词汇表converse 交谈,对话pluck up the courage 鼓起勇气strike up 开始(交谈)solitude 独处interact 交往,交流social connections 社会关系uncomfortable 不舒服的,难受的intimidated 发怵的,害怕的underestimate 低估negative voice (头脑里)负面的声音,消极的思想chat 聊天connect with 与……建立良好的关系wellbeing 健康mood 心情introvert 性格内向的人anxious 焦虑的extroverts 性格外向的人come out of your shell 变得不再自闭,融入外部世界(make) small talk 闲聊,寒暄Step 2 原汁原味享受阅读‘It’s good to talk’, so some people say. When I commute into London, there are certainly plenty of people conversing on their mobile phones – sometimes too loudly – discussing and sharing personal details with a friend. For me, it’s strange that they talk as though the person is sitting next to them, when they don’t even acknowledge the person who is actually sitting beside them. Many of us spend part of each day surrounded by strangers, whether on our daily commute, or sitting in a park or a cafe. But most of them remain just that – strangers. However, new evidence has shown that plucking up the courage to strike up a conversation might be good for our health. Nicholas Epley from the University of Chicago and Juliana Schroeder from the University of California are behavioural scientists. They looked at this silent relationship and whether solitude is a more positive experience than interacting with strangers, or if people misunderstand the consequences of distant social connections. They found that many people feel uncomfortable and intimidated talking to others and their research suggested that when we make an initial conversation “we consistently underestimate how much a new person likes us.” It seems we carry a negative voice in our head telling us all the things that could go wrong and why someone wouldn’t want to converse with us.Their research involved an experiment with a group of Chicago commuters and found that “every participant in our experiment who actually tried to talk to a stranger found the person sitting next to them was happy to chat.” From this and other research, the conclusion is that connecting with strangers is surprisingly pleasant and it has a positive impact on our wellbeing. Gillian Sandstrom, a social psychologist from Essex University in the UK, told the BBC that “people are in a better mood after they reach out and have a conversation, however minimal.” It’s true that talking can make you feel happier and happiness can lead to better mental health. However, if you’re an introvert, the thought of speaking to someone new might make you anxious. But the American research found “both extroverts and introverts are happier when they are asked to behave in an extroverted ma nner.” So maybe, if you’re a loner, it’s time to come out of your shell and make some small talk with a stranger – it could be the beginning of a new friendship. Task 1 Answer the following questions according to the passage.1. According to the article, how can talking to a stranger be better for our health?Talking to strangers can put you in a good mood and make you feel happier, and happiness can lead to better mental health.2. Why might we not want to speak to a stranger? We carry a negative voice in our head telling us all the things that could go wrong and why a stranger wouldn’t want to converse with us.3. True or false? Commuters in Chicago involved in a social experiment found that people they sat next to were willing to talk to them.True. An experiment with a group of Chicago commuters found that “every participant in our experiment who actually tried to talk to a stranger found the person sitting next to them was happy to chat.”4. In another experiment, in what way did introverts behave that made them happier?American research found “both extroverts and introverts are happier when they are asked to behave in an extroverted manner.”5. What could help start the beginning of a new friendship?Reaching out and making small talk with a stranger could be the beginning of a new friendship. The city of the future城市的未来语篇导读:未来城市的发展会是什么样的,我们还会喜欢在未来城市中居住吗?

Step 2 Reading and understandingFor centuries, people have moved to and lived in cities. These sprawling urban centres are placesto find work, friends and fun. It's no surprise that they continue to grow as more and more peopleflood in hoping to make the most of the opportunities they offer but adding to the congestion and pollution that already exists.According to a report by the United Nations, 54 per cent of the world's population lives in urban areas and it predicts that by 2050, this figure will have increased to around 70 per cent. But as more and more people migrate from the countryside to the city to get better opportunities, they can end up with nowhere to live. This is true in places such as Rio de Janeiro, where migrants can't rent or buy a home, and they end up building their own communities and houses on unoccupied land. These are called shanty towns - poor communities where the houses are built out of cheap materials like corrugated iron and plastic sheeting – and often don't have any electricity or water supply. These are, of course, not the megacities of the future we want to see. Some serious urban planning is needed to make our cities of the future good, safe and modern places to live in. This involves improving the infrastructure, the housing conditions and also the opportunities for education and employment.Something urban planners are looking at now is the creation of 'smart cities'. According to John Rossant, founder and chairman of the non-profit organisation New Cities Foundation, technology is the way forward. He thinks that it's generally accepted that "cloud computing, ubiquitous internet, robust 5G networks etc, will transform our cities." He says technology is really "a game changer", in urbanisation. It would collect large amounts of data about how a city is performing and may improve how a city functions. This may sound like a utopian view. For now, some cities and conurbations around the world are trying out more low-tech schemes to try and make them desirable places to live and work in. Building shared-ownership housing and improving public transport are some ways. And encouraging cycling and building bike lanes can keep the population healthy and cut down on smog. What would make your city a better place to live in?Step

中捞到钱财course 课程Esperanto 世界语classroom 教室,课堂get your head round (something) 理解、弄懂(复杂的事情)peer support 同学之间互相支持spell the end 预示某事结束teaching 教学degree 学位resource 资源committed (态度)坚定的,投入的motivation 积极性,动力stick with it 坚持下去Step 2 原汁原味享受阅读We know it’s good to learn another language. It opens doors, makes you more employable, helps you make new friends, and it’s fun too. But to improve our linguistic skills, many of us have to endure hours of school lessons or evening classes, with our heads buried in textbooks. It’s no wonder then that technology appears to be providing a better and more accessible way of learning. There is certainly a huge demand for language learning, and having a smartphone means you can have a virtual teacher with you wherever you go. Many app developers are keen to cash in on the demand, and there are numerous learning apps available – including our own, free, BBC Learning English app! One of many popular apps, Duolingo, offers 91 courses in 30 languages and has more than 300 million users. Some educational apps offer languages not popular enough to be taught at evening classes, or at most universities. And others offer ‘invented’ language courses in Esperanto, Elvish and Star Trek's Klingon – lessons you might not find in a traditional classroom. Whatever you want to learn, apps allow you to go at your own pace and fit learning around other commitments. But they’re not perfect – you might not get your head round the grammar and will lack the peer support you could get in a classroom environment. So, does technology spell the end of traditional classrooms and teachers? Guy Baron, head of modern languages at Aberystwyth University, thinks not. He told the BBC that apps should be used alongside classroom methods, not to the exclusion of traditional teaching. And he adds: "The apps are very conversational... they're not designed for degrees, but they could be additional resources." Certainly technology is going to help in and outside the classroom. But attending a real lesson, facing a real teacher, probably forces you to be more committed.Motivation can be a problem when using an app. But if you have a genuine and practical reason to learn another language, you will no doubt stick with it.Step

Step 1 Vocabulary词汇表colleague 同事talk at someone 滔滔不绝地(对某人)说,(不顾对方感受)而不停地说voice one’s opinion 发表某人的观点role 职责,岗位managerial 管理上的strategy 策略stakeholder 有利益相关的人power trip 自我膨胀,享受权利带来的喜悦staff 员工impose 强制实行assert authority 维护权威therapy 治疗,疗法doodling (心不在焉时)随手乱画drone on 喋喋不休talent 才能frustration 挫败感bond 紧密团结,建立关系agenda 会议议程adhered to 遵守,坚持participant 参会者,参加者add value 增加价值Step 2 Reading and understandingIt’s time for another meeting! If you have a job, the chances are some of your working week will be taken up attending a few of them. You and your colleagues will gather together in a meeting room, be talked at for an hour and come out wondering what was the point of it? Of course, it is sometimes necessary to meet to discuss things, share information, voice your opinion and agree a way forward – but are there any other benefits?Recent research has suggested that we attend more meeting than ever before – and that's more time listening and talking than actually doing our jobs. Professor Patrik Hall from the University of Malmo told the BBC that th is is partly due to more “meetings-intense” roles such as managerial and strategy jobs. These require more meetings with teams and other stakeholders. But, he says, despite there being more of them, "few decisions are made".It’s possible that it’s manager s on a power trip who set up these meetings – a way of controlling staff, imposing new rules and regulations and asserting their authority. But as Professor Hall points out: "Many managers don't know what to do," and when they are "unsure of their role", they respond by generating more meetings. And to make matters worse, some meetings involve a pre or post-meeting which eats into even more of the working day.But the researchers from the University of Malmo have found that a meeting can be seen as a form o f ‘therapy’ –it doesn’t have to have an outcome and doesn’t have to be meaningless. So, if you’re just doodling or glancing at your smartphone as your boss drones on, it’s worth considering that a meeting can be an opportunity to demonstrate your talents, express frustration, question ideas and spend time bonding with your colleagues. There are a few things to be considered if a meeting is to be a success: it needs an agenda that is adhered to plus an opportunity to discuss any other business, and it should be booked for a short period of time –otherwise the meeting will expand to fit the time that’s been allocated. And, as Professor Hall says, the “equality” of participants is important. But I think I just prefer the advice of Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, who urged colleagues to walk out of meetings as soon as it becomes obvious that they are not adding value. "It's not rude to leave," he explains. "It's rude to make someone stay and waste their time." Right, I’m off!

Do you have any tattoos? I don't. I've never been brave enough to go under the needle. But if you do have one, you are not alone. According to a report by Experian, the number of tattoo parlours in Britain increased by 173% between 2004 and 2014. Tattoos have always been controversial –personally and culturally. Some people love them and some hate them. So, are they good or bad? These days, one in five people in the UK has some ink –whether it's a commemorative date, a sleeve or a full body suit. What's responsible for this rise in popularity? "You see a lot of celebrities getting tattooed," says Lee Clements of the British Tattoo Artist Association speaking on BBC radio. As a result, people want to copy them or it becomes a fashion thing –certain tattoos become a trend.Employers have become more accepting of visible tats too. Last year, London's Metropolitan Police relaxed a ban on recruiting candidates with visible body art. And earlier this year, Air New Zealand said it wouldend a ban on body art to allow workers to express their individuality and cultural heritage. That said, not all employers would agree. Grace, 28, told the BBC that she had been offered jobs in sales, which were then withdrawn when employers saw her hand tattoo. "It feels like having a tattoo is not socially acceptable," she says. "Having a tattoo does not amount to a protected characteristic," remarks Susan Harris, legal director at the GMB union, a UK trade union. This means a person can be dismissed for having one if it breaches the employer's dress code –except on religious grounds. And let's not forget the risk of infection. At present anyone in the UK can set up a parlour and offer procedures without proper training, a report from the Royal Society for Public Health says. They note that just under 20% of those tattooed experience negative side effects, including swelling, burning or a skin infection. It seems that attitudes to tattoos are changing, but they aren't quite there yet. Should you be persuaded to have one –visit a reputable tattoo artist with a portfolio. Discuss your design with them and don't make a hasty decision! If you later regret it, your tattoo will need laser removal or a cover up. Better get a temporary tattoo or henna tattoo first and see if you're happy with it. Wear it for a few months and then decide.
