跟老外说英语的时候,“流利”和“准确”哪个重要?

跟老外说英语的时候,“流利”和“准确”哪个重要?when you get your hair cut—the hair stylist or the pair of scissors, what would you say?如果我在你剪头发的时候问你,发型师和剪刀,哪个更重要?你会怎么回答?My guess is that you would say both.我猜你会说两个都很重要。

So that’s what I say when someone asks me about fluency (the ability to speak and write easily in English) and accuracy (speaking and writing with correct grammar, knowing when to use the simple past and when to use the simple present, etc). They are both necessary in mastering English.所以,当有人问我:对于说英文,流畅性(能够很随意地说和写英文)还是正确性(用正确的语法说和写英文,知道该用一般过去时还是该用一般现在时)更重要的时候,我的回答是:两个都很重要。

However, if I had to choose one or the other for beginning or intermediate students, I would say working on fluency is more important. Now, this is just my opinion; other teachers may think differently.但是,如果让我为初级或者中级英语学习者选一个的话,我会说流畅性更重要。

当然这只是我的观点,其他老师或许并不这么想。

CLT

CLT

1. Using the traditional approach or using CLT depends on the educational goal. Today, in china, the traditional approach enjoys priority because of the examination-oriented educational system which means high scores in the test. There are there reasons accounts for my point of view.Firstly, traditional approach focus primary on the mastery of grammatical competence. Grammatical competence refers to the knowledge students have of a language that accounts for students’ ability to produce sentence in language. It refers to knowledge of the building blocks of sentences and how sentences are formed. It stress on the ability of producing correct sentence and not making mistakes, which is coincide with the accurate requirements of examinations.Secondly, traditional approach focus on mastery of different items of grammar and practice through controlled activities such as memorization of dialogs and drills. Such activities are easy to control. The teacher will notice the errors and provide corrective feedback immediately to form good habits from the very beginning.Thirdly, traditional approach adopts the teacher-centered classroom form. Teacher is the model for correct speech and writing. He/she is the authority of solving students’ questions. Students can consult their teacher about any doubts in the process of study. Students will be very confident about the teachers’ answer and follow the guidance of their teacher in the examination.According to the above reasons, traditional approach can ensure accuracy and it’s easy to control the class process. That’s why it is more work for the teacher in china whose responsibility is mainly ensuring students acquiring excellent marks in the examination.2. To begin with, CLT is not the favorite methodology for school teachers. Chinese educational system is examination-oriented. Students are expected to acquire high scores. Accurate answer is a major factor to get high marks, while it is the result of traditional approach. CLT focus on meaningful communication and has high command of communicative competence which means knowing what to say, how to say, how to understand different types of texts and so on. It mainly stresses on the fluent ongoing communication, or we can say CLT pays more attention to oral English----the capacity of expressing one’s idea properly and understanding other people’s point of view. Under such circumstance, if the interlocutor can understand each other even with ungrammatical sentences, it’s acceptable in accordance with the standards of CLT. No one will point out their errors or support corrective feedbacks. The will maintain the wrong sentence format until one day they realize the mistakes by themselves. But it contradicts with the accurate demands of examination-oriented educational system. Students will not build excellent accurate grammar knowledge and they will probably fall their exam. Teacher will be criticized for such a bad result. That’s the main challenge for teachers in china to adopt CLT.Then, the role change of teacher and student brings difficulties for both parts. Firstly, it is difficult for the teacher to control the classroom and master the knowledge level of his students. As the classroom activities of CLT are the use of pair work activities, role plays, group work activities and project work. Teachers only walkaround the classroom to monitor the discussion and facilitate students when necessary. So the teacher can not monitor all groups at the same time, and the noise environment adds more difficulties for the teacher to monitor the overall situation. Secondly, students have to participate in classroom activities and become comfortable with listening to their peers in group work, rather than relying on the teacher for a model. They are expected to take on a greater degree of responsibility for their own learning. It is a disaster for some students because they are used to depend on their teachers and are lack of cooperating ability.Next, Chinese teacher will have difficulties in design syllabus. For a relatively long period, Chinese teachers are used to adopt traditional approach—presentation, practice and production. In applying CLT in the classroom, new classroom techniques and activities were needed. Fluency practice can be contrasted with accuracy practice. Teachers should design a syllabus that takes balance of fluency activities and accuracy activities. It is really a great difficulty for Chinese teachers to overcome.3. Of course, it’s wrong to completely abandon the traditional teaching methods, because CLT is emphasis on developing fluency in language use. To achieve fluency interaction, learners must negotiate meaning and use communication strategies to avoid communication breakdowns. This often involves a heavy dependence on vocabulary and communication strategies and there is little motivation to use accurate grammar or pronunciation. So fluency practice can be contrast with accuracy practice and developing fluency is at the expense of accuracy, to some extent. In fact, traditional approach which focuses on accuracy practice should be used to support fluency activities. The two parts should become complementary. For example, in the process of instructing grammar rules, teacher can give students many examples of sentences containing a grammar rule and ask learners to work out the rule for themselves. Such activity belongs to CLT. Then in order to achieve accurate mastery of grammar rapidly, teachers can give opportunities to practice using them through drills and let students practice using the new structure in communication. These activities typically belong to traditional approach---practice and production. In doing so, students can not only be interesting in the active classroom activities, but also master knowledge quickly and became more and more motivated in language learning.Instead of “throw the baby with water”, The teacher should unit the traditional approach and CLT together to build perfect teaching methods.。

Chapter 3 Making correct and effective sentences12

Chapter 3 Making correct and effective sentences造正确有效的句子2008.12/128 A Main Clause in a Complex SentenceIn a Complex sentence there must be a main clause, whether it is at the beginning or at the end of the sentence.9 Proper Use of ComparisonsAdjectives or adverbs of the comparative degree should be used only when there is comparison. But we should not use adjectives or adverbs of the comparative degree when there is no comparison, explicit or implied. In addition, we should remember that only things of the same kind can be compared.10 Correct Use of the TenseSince a predicate verb must be used in a certain tense, we should learn to use the tensescorrectly. Tenses tell the action of the verb takes place. Whenever we make a sentence, we should ask ourselves when the thing mentioned in the sentence happens, and use the right tense to report it. Perhaps the perfect tenses are more difficult than the other tenses and deserve greater attention. When we talk about something that happened in the past, but its result remains at present, we should use the present perfect. So far we have been talking about the requirements of correct sentences and a few common mistakes. There are of course many other types of mistakes. The best way to deal with them is to review grammar and study the entries we are not clear about in a dictionary, and observe the use of words, while we are learning new things, we can discover and correct our old mistakes.Focus 2 Coordination and SubordinationWhen we mention two or more things or ideas of equal importance, we often use coordination clause joined with a coordinating conjunction(and, but, or, nor, yet, so, or, for). This form or method is called coordination. When we express an important idea in a main clause and one or more less important ideas in subordinate clauses, we are using method of subordination. It is clear that the choice of coordination or subordination is mainly decided by the relationship between the ideas to be expressed. In each of the following sentences more than one fact or idea is mentioned. There is one thing we should pay attention to: the use of conjunctive verbs such as however, therefore, nevertheless, moreover, and besides. In the new versions not only clauses, but also parallel predicate verbs and participial and infinitive phrases are used in place of sentences. This shows that coordinating andsubordinating are not only ways of combining sentences. Sometimes complete sentences may be turned into phrases or single verbs without loss in meaning.Short sentences are not only emphatic, but effective in describing a series of quick movements and actions. Generally speaking, both short and long sentences should be used ; using one type of sentences continuously would be monotonous.Focus 3 Effective SentencesA correct sentence may not express the idea it intends to express very clearly or forcefully. Correctness alone can not make a good sentence. It has to be effective at the same time. Effective sentences have some or all the following qualities: unity, coherence, conciseness, emphasis, and variety.1 UnityUnity refers to two qualities: there is only one main idea in a sentence, and that idea iscomplete. This does not mean that all sentences have to be short and simple. It is often necessary to write a long sentence with many parts in it. Such a sentence expresses a central idea supported or modified by various subordinate ideas, or two or more related parallel ideas. In other words, ideas that are closely connected can be expressed in one sentence, while ideas that are not closely connected should not be put into one sentence.2 CoherenceCoherence means clear and correct arrangement of the parts of a sentence. Since the meaning of English sentences mainly depends on word order, the arrangement of the parts of a sentence is especially important to accurate expression of ideas. A coherent sentence is easy to understand and its meaning cannot be mistaken, because the connection between its words conforms to grammar rules and usage.A participial phrase expresses an action done by the person or the thing denoted by the noun it modifies.A modifier should be placed as close as possible to the word it modifies. If they are far from each other, misunderstanding may arise.Similarly, we should also be careful when we make changes in tense, voice and mood.Wherever possible, parallel ideas should be expressed in parallel constructions, which give the reader the feeling that the ideas are equally important. In short, coherence is essential to the accurate and clear expression of ideas. So it is a good habit to reread the sentences we have written to see whether they are coherence, and make necessary changes if they are not.3 ConcisenessWe write sentences to express ideas. The use of words in a sentence, therefore, is decided by the idea it expresses. Needless words do not help express ideas; on thecontrary, they obscure the meaning and confuse the reader. So one of the rules of sentence-making is to use only the necessary words, or as few words as possible so long as the meaning is fully expressed. But often we tend to put a superfluous多余的word here and there in a sentence. This habit may come from the way we talk. It is common in speaking to repeat a word, use words of similar meaning together, and change words we have said and even the structure of a sentence in the middle of it. But we should not do so in writing. This is possible because when we write we have time to check what we have written and delete all the words that are not needed for the expression of ideas, or to make our sentences concise. Here are a few hints for making concise and clear sentences;A, Use a pronoun instead of repeating a noun; B, Use a word instead of a phrase with the same meaning, and use a phrase instead of aclause with the same meaningC, Do not repeat words or phrases, if possible, in a sentence or in one that follows;D, Do not use different words or phrases with similar meanings in the same sentence;E, Do not repeat the same idea in different sentences except for emphasis.4 EmphasisWhen we talk, we emphasize an important idea by raising our voices or making a gesture. When we write, we also have ways to lay emphasis on certain words or phrases. PlacingThe end and the beginning of a sentence usually attract the reader’s attention, so important elements of a sentence should be put at these tao places, especially the end. Climactic sequenceIn enumerating列举things or ideas, we should start from the least important and end with the most important, or in the climactic高潮的sequence. The use of verbs in the active voiceVerbs are generally more emphatic than nouns or any other part of speech. SubordinationWe have talked about subordination and coordination. Subordinating a part of a sentence is a way of giving emphasis to the main idea in the sentence.Repeating important wordsRepetition as a rule should be avoided, but occasionally important words can be repeated for the sake of emphasis.Short sentencesShort sentences are often emphatic, especially after longer ones.Balanced sentencesA balanced sentence is one that consists of two parts of the same structure and roughly the same length, and with contrasted(or similar) ideas.Periodic sentences圆周句(指主要意义至句尾始明白的句子)A periodic sentence is one that is not complete in structure or meaning until it reaches the last word, which is the most important word of the sentence.A sentence in which the main clause or its predicate is withheld until the end; for example,周期句:主句或谓语在句末的句子;例如:Despite heavy winds and nearly impenetrable ground fog, the plane landed safely.尽管有强风和无法看透的地雾,飞机安全着陆When we read this sentence we are not kept in suspense for the main meaning, as we are when reading the periodic one, and we fell its force is weaker. But the loose sentence may sound more natural and may be easier to understand.Negative-positive statementsWhen a negative statement is followed by a positive one, the meaning is emphasized by the contrast.Rhetorical questions反问They are questions in form but emphatic statements in meaning. They are not asked to be answered.5 VarietyA series of sentences of the same structure and length with the same noun or pronoun as the subjects produce monotony. It is often good to vary structures and mix short and long, simple and compound or complex, loose and periodic sentences, so long as the meaning is properly expressed.。

Construction began as early as the 7th century BC, but the wall as we know it today was mostly built during the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644 AD).The wall is not just a simple structure; it includes watchtowers, fortresses, and passes. These structures were used for military defense, but they also served as trade posts and allowed the exchange of goods along the Silk Road. Today, the Great Wall has become a symbol of China’s strength and determination, and it attracts millions of visitors each year.Although the Great Wall is very old, some parts of it are still in good condition. 如何构建一个清晰正确的句子英语作文

如何构建一个清晰正确的句子英语作文

如何构建一个清晰正确的句子英语作文How to Construct a Clear and Correct SentenceHey there, friends! Today, I'm going to teach you all about how to construct clear and correct sentences in English. It's super important to be able to communicate effectively through writing, and making sure your sentences are well-formed is a big part of that.First things first, let's talk about what a sentence actually is. A sentence is a group of words that expresses a complete thought. It has a subject (what or who the sentence is about) and a predicate (what's being said about the subject). For example, in the sentence "The dog chased the cat," "the dog" is the subject, and "chased the cat" is the predicate.Every sentence needs to have a subject and a predicate to be complete. If it's missing one of those parts, it's just a fragment, not a full sentence. Let me give you some examples of fragments so you can see what I mean:"Ran down the street." (Missing a subject)"The excited puppy." (Missing a predicate)Those aren't proper sentences on their own. But if we add the missing parts, they become complete:"The dog ran down the street.""The excited puppy chewed on the slipper."See how that works? The subject and predicate together form the backbone of the sentence. Now let's talk about some of the other important parts that go into building clear, correct sentences.Capitalization is really important. You always need to capitalize the first word of a sentence. Like this: "The bright sun warmed the earth." You also capitalize proper nouns, which are the specific names of people, places, or things. For example: "Sally threw the ball to Michael in Central Park."Then you've got punctuation, which uses little marks to separate parts of sentences and help make the meaning clear. Let me give you some examples of common punctuation marks:Period (.). This marks the end of a sentence that makes a statement: "I am hungry."Question mark (?). Use this at the end of a sentence that asks a question: "Are you coming to the party?"Exclamation point (!). This shows excitement or emphasis: "Wow, that was amazing!"Comma (,). Commas separate items in a list, or different parts of a sentence: "I want pizza, soda, and ice cream for my birthday." "After lunch, we went to the park."There are some other punctuation marks too, like apostrophes, quotation marks, and semicolons. But those are the basic ones you'll use a lot in constructing sentences. Now let's talk about making sentences clear by putting the parts in the right order. In English, we follow a basic pattern of subject-verb-object. For example:Subject-Verb-Object: "Sally kicked the ball."Not: "Kicked Sally the ball." (Incorrect order)It's also important to make sure your verbs agree with the subject. That means if the subject is single, the verb needs to be singular too. And if the subject is plural, the verb is plural. Like this:"The dog barks." (Singular subject "dog", singular verb "barks")"The dogs bark." (Plural subject "dogs", plural verb "bark")Mixing those up can make the sentence unclear or just plain wrong.Let's practice putting all of this together into some proper sentences, shall we? Remember, we need a subject, a predicate with a verb that agrees, capitalization, and punctuation. Here goes:"My friend Jacob loves to play soccer at the park.""Do you want to get ice cream after school?""The three hungry kittens meowed loudly for their dinner!"In those sentences, I included a subject and predicate, with the verb agreeing with the subject. I capitalized the first word and any proper nouns. And I used appropriate punctuation like periods, question marks, and exclamation points.See, by remembering those key things - having a complete subject and predicate, capitalizing properly, using the right verbs, and punctuating correctly - you can construct nice, clear sentences that communicate your thoughts effectively.Like this: "The delicious triple-scoop chocolate sundae, dripping with gooey fudge sauce and crowned with a bright red cherry, beckoned to me from the diner counter."Or: "Whistling a merry tune, Sam strolled down the sunny lane, swingi ng his backpack and greeting every neighbor with a smile."Don't be afraid to get creative and have fun playing around with different ways of expressing yourself!Constructing solid, clear sentences takes practice, but it's an essential skill. The more you work on it, the easier it will become. Just keep those key rules in mind:•Include a complete subject and predicate•Capitalize properly•Make sure verbs agree with subjects•Use correct punctuationFollow those guidelines, and you'll be able to communicate your thoughts and ideas effectively through well-built sentences. Keep working at it, and you'll be a writing superstar in no time!。

如:•1. 缺主语•(误)If we want our country to be rich and strong, mostly depend on education.•(正) If we want our country to be rich and strong, we must depend on education.•2. 缺谓语•(误)Many people who get married before they are mature enough.•(正) Many people who get married before they are mature enough are faced with many unexpected problems.•3. 缺关系代词•(误)There are a lot of students like to read aloud in the morning.•(正) There are a lot of students who like to read aloud in the morning.•4. 缺不定式•(误)Become a biologist isn’t an easy thing for me.•(正) To become a biologist isn’t an easy thing for me.•当然,残缺句还有很多种类。

通常这类错误由粗心和匆忙所致。

如果仔细检查,还是可以避免的。

•特别要注意那些以从属连词或短语等开头的句子,要确定以这些词开始的每个从句,都应附属于一个独立的句子。

•避免残缺句的最好办法是注意区别句子和句子的一部分。

在写英语作文时,要记住:一个句子在语法和逻辑上是一个完整的意义表达单位,至少具有一个主语和谓语。
