CYBERSPACE if you don't love it, leave it
if you don't love it ,leave it
The article mainly answers three questions, so it is divided into three parts.
Part I (Para 1---5) What is the nature of cyberspace?
• The author defines the nature of cyberspace by comparing it with real estate. According to the author, cyberspace is like real estate consisting of many different areas such as parkland, shopping mall, school district, church, state and drugstore. Cyberspace also consisted of different places, each place catering to the tastes and interests of a particular group of people. Unfortunately, some places are not suitable for children, other are nasty places that good citizens should avoid. Therefore, many people think that cyberspace should be regulated.
Do you know how to say “网民”?

④Finally, the anxiety of dating is greatly lessened with cyber-dating. Traditionally, men take the lead in dating. They are the ones who have to ask a woman out on a date. They have to risk rejection. It’s no better for women, however. Many women still wait for a man to ask them out first. Then, if they don’t want to go out with him, they have to let the man down gently. While it’s true that sometimes with cyber-dating men still get rejected and women still reject, you experience this in the privacy of your own home. Moreover, you never have to see the person again because you have never met! It’s the perfect solution.

Background Information1. Introduction to the AuthorEsther Dvson was born in 1 95 1 in Zurich, Switzerland. She grew up in Princeton, New Jersey, and received a B. A. from Harvard. Dyson is the editor and publisher of the widely respected computer newsletter Release 1.0 which circulates to 1, 600 computer industry leaders. She is chairperson of the Electronic Frontier Foundation, an industry—financed civil liberties watchdog group. Dyson is also the organizer and moderator of the annual Personal Computer Forum. ……Cyber space:If You Don‟t Love It, Leave It” appeared in the New York Times Magazine (July 1995).2. Introduction to the TextCyberspace generally refers to the Internet and the information contained on it. Useful information is easily accessible to any computer user via a modem and a server. For this reason, many people are fascinated with cyberspace. Unfortunately, cyberspace also offers undesirable information and indecent pictures. Some websites even give instructions in stealing, gambling and other crimes, thus creating social problems. Therefore, for some, cyberspace is a nasty place that good citizens shouldavoid and government should control. What should be done? Should cyberspace be destroyed? Should it be strictly regulated? These issues are discussed in the present article.3. Pre-reading questionsLead-in questionsPurposes:·To present key words and phrases related to Internet and cyberspace·To encourage students to think about the topic of the coming text, i.e.cyberspace ·To arouse students‟ interest in the topic of the coming text·To develop students‟ skill in predicting the main idea of the textMethodology:1.In activity 1, some key words and phrases along with their definitions are presented.Although many students are already familiar with these words and phrases, they cannot always give accurate definitions of them in English. To make sure that the whole class participate in the discussion, let them work in pairs first and then encourage them to compare their answers with other neighboring classmates. By working with a partner first and then more classmates, students should be able to match the terms and definitions correctly. There is no need to check the answers in class, but be ready to provide any help they need while they are working.2.Activity 2 is designed to arouse students‟ interest in the topic of the text and prepare them to read the text actively. Make sure that everybody is interviewing or is being interviewed. They can ask the five questions 1isted in the textbook. Also encourage them to think of other questions to ask. If time permits, you can find one or two students to report to the class what they have found.3.In order to get the whole class involved, pair—work is recommended for activity 3.It may be very easy for your students to give a list of reasons why they like cyberspace. For example, they can do all the things listed in activity 2 and perhaps many others. Encourage students to think critically about cyberspace, for example, what problems cyberspace has created or may create, what harm it may do to adults and children in their life, work and studies, etc.4.Activity 4 can be a class discussion. But control the time!Key to lead-in questions1.Match the terms with the definitions.1) cyberspace: the Internet and the information on it (e)2) cyberspace community: a group of people with similar interests and tastes communicating among themselves on the Internet (f)3) e-mail: messages that computer users send to each other via a modem and servers on the Internet (b)4) the Internet/N et: a network of computers through which people with a computer and a modem can exchange messages (C)5)surfing the Internet: looking for information on the Internet(a)6) website: the place where screens of information are found on the Interact(d)2.&3.(略)Answers can be diverse.4.The title ……Cyberspace:If You Don‟t Love It, Leave It” consists of two parts divided by a“:”. The first part tells us the subject of the article; the second part indicates a choice: love it, or leave it. You have complete freedom.Period 2-3While-reading activitya. The organization of the textThe Gist of the ArticleThis article mainly answers three questions:·What is the nature of cyberspace?·What does cyberspace comprise?·Should cyberspace be regulated? If so,how should it be regulated? In paragraphs 1 to 5, the author defines the nature of cyberspace by comparing it with real Estate. According to the author, cyberspace is like real estate consisting of many different areas such as Darkland, shopping mall, school district, church, state and drugstore. Cyberspace also consists of different places, each place catering to the tastes and interests of a particular group of people. It is up to the individual to decide which area to go to. Unfortunately, some places are not suitable for children, others are nasty places that good citizens should avoid. Therefore, many people think that cyberspace should be regulated.Paragraphs 6 to 1 0 discuss what cyberspace comprises. According to the author, cyberspace comprises three parts. First, there are e—mail conversations. Second, there are information and entertainment services. Third, there are communities in which individuals can choose to participate. If they are not interested in a particular cyberspace community and its rules, they can simply leave it.The author argues in paragraphs 11 to 16 that, besides government regulations, cyberspace communities should also rule themselves by setting and enforcing their own community standards. Some communities are already doing so.The author admits at the end of the article that cyberspace, like any terrestrial place, is not a perfect place; it has its own problems, but individuals can exercise their freedom to choose what suits them: they can have individual choice and responsibility.b. Detailed reading---study of the language pointsDetailed reading of the textPurposes:·To help students draw important facts of each paragraph ‟· To help students identify and remove the source of difficulty in understanding the text · To help students actively interact with the text and develop strategies to work out the meaning of the text·To give students practice in note-takingMethodology:When working through the text, you can, besides explanation (refer to “DetailedEx planation of the Text‟‟ in the student’s book), use the technique of asking questions to develop students‟understanding. Make sure students always keep their text open when they answer the questions. The purpose of asking questions is to make students actively interact with the text and develop their strategies to draw the meaning from the text. At the same time, they can become aware of the way language is used to convey meaning. There is a close connection between answering questions and developing understanding. At the start, three types of questions should be designed for this purpose. First, straightforward questions ne ed to be asked to draw students‟attention to important facts in the text and to ensure they understand the literal meaning of the facts. The second type of questions should be used to develo p students‟ skills of tackling difficult sentences. The third type should make students recognize grammatical and lexical features that play a crucial part in the interpretation of the text.…When students answer your questions they should also practice taking notes. You can ask the following questions orally.1. What do Americans like to do ?2. Is there a place on earth where you can go and be yourself?3. What was cyberspace formerly? Who go to cyberspace now ?4. What is real estate?5. What metaphor does the author use to describe cyberspace ?6. In what way is cyberspace similar to real estate?7. What places in cyberspace are capturing the popular imagination?8. What advantage does cyberspace have over television system?9. Why, according to the author, do e-mail conversations require no regulations ?10. In what way is cyberspace like bookstores, malls and movie houses?1l. In what way is cyberspace like bars and restaurants?12. How do cyberspace communities evolve? Give examples to illustrate your point.13. What is the unique characteristic about cyberspace according to the author?14. If not, why are people so excited about it ?Period 4Post-reading activitya. Speaking ActivityAsk Ss to discuss the “pros and cons of the Internet” in groups and then present their opinions in class.b. Almost everyone in the room raised a hand.“Then I asked how many knew that employers are reviewing Facebook for hiring purposes,”says Fabian, director for Center for Career Services at Susquehanna University.“No hands were raised, and their faces revealed the students' surprise.”Although some parents do keep track of their teen's online activities, most teenagers don't realize that websites may be monitored by schools, prospective(未来的)employers or anyone else who might be interested in the teenager's lifestyle not just today but anytime in the future. Most of us don't realize that the information that gets posted on the Internet may be deleted, but it doesn't disappear permanently.“The stuff is there forever,”says Jamie Riehle, director of Web Publishing at Lycos.“It is backed up (备份)on servers and doesn't go away.”As company recruiters, college admission officers, law enforcement personnel and parents become more Web savvy (有见识的),it becomes even more vital for teenagers to be cautious when posting any information on their websites. Even though sites that are private can be seen only by a preselected list of friends, there are companies that, for a fee,can dig deeper into cyberspace(网络空间) and find anything. Even government officials who thought that deleting email would exonerate(宣布……无罪)them from wrongdoing are discovering that,on the Web,there is no such thing as private or gone forever.Steven Rothenberg, president and founder of College ,suggests that teenagers think of their Web posts as tattoos(纹身). “Inherently(内在地),there is nothing wrong with them if they are private,”he says.“But if they are visibl e or offensive,it can affect the way others see you.”1.The information posted on the Internet________.A.can be deleted easilyB.can't be deleted completelyually falls in the hands of employersD.remains for a long time2.What do we know about sites that are private?A.They are owned by some companies.B.They charge people for viewing them.C.They can keep the information a secret.D.They are not so private as supposed.3.The second paragraph implies that________.A.one who posts negative things may have their employment affectedB.a teenager should not write about his lifestyle onlineC.it's hard for parents to keep track of their teen's onlineactivitiesD.the Internet is becoming more insecure4.Steven Rothenberg believes that________.A.teenagers should not be allowed to post anything onlineB.teenagers should keep their information private onlineC.teenagers should be cautious about their posts onlineD.teenagers should be monitored onlineBEveryone has got two personalities—the one that is shown to the world and the other that is secret and real. You don't show your secret personality when you are awake because you can control your behavior, but when you are asleep, your sleeping position shows the real you. In a normal night,of course, people frequently change their positions. The important position is the one that you go to sleep in.If you go to sleep on your back, you're a very open person. You normally trust people and you are easily influenced by fashion or new ideas. You don't like to displease people. So you never express your real feelings. You're quite shy and you aren't quite sure of yourself. If you sleep on your stomach, you are a rather secretive person. You worry a lot and you're always easily upset. You always stick to your own opinions or judgment, but you don't raise your hope too much. You usually live for today not tomorrow. This means that you enjoy having a good time.If you sleep curled up,you are probably a very nervous person. You have a low opinion of yourself and so you're often defensive(防卫的). You're shy and you don't normally like meeting people. You prefer to be on your own. You're easily hurt.If you sleep on your side, you have usually got a well-balanced personality. You know your strength and weakness. You're usually careful. You trust yourself. You sometimes feel anxious, but you don't often get sad. You always say what you think even if it makes people rather angry.5.According to the passage,a person, who is not willing to change his mind probably sleeps________.[:]A.on his sideB.on his backC.curled upD.on his stomach6.If a person prefers to sleep curled up rather than on his back,he maybe want to________.A.do things personallyB.stay aloneC.keep things secretD.trust others easily7.The main idea of this passage is that________.A.one's sleeping position has something to do with one's characterB.everyone has got both real and secret personalitiesC.the position in which one goes to sleep is the most important oneD.when awake, one does not show one's secret personalityCHere are some tips on how to keep you, your belongings and your money safe during traveling. After all,it'd be a shame to spend all that time finding the best price for your trip, only to lose your cash and credit cards to a thief.Don't let others know that you are new here. You're a tourist. You know that, but you don't want anybody else to know that. Don't unfold your big map on a busy corner. Don't ask strangers on the street for directions. Learn your route ahead of time, and step into a business for directions whenever possible. Be sure that your wallet is in a securely fastened pocket. Or go like 007 with a hidden money belt. How cool is that?Be careful, even in your hotel room.Never blindly answer a knock at your door. If the knocker identifies himself as a hotel employee, call the front desk to confirm. Always make sure your hotel door completely closes when entering or exiting.Don't leave your valuables lying around when you leave for the day. That hotel safe is there for a reason!8.Why shouldn't tourists wear a fanny pack?A.Because it shows that you are not a person around here.B.Because it is not convenient.C.Because it can't be hidden under your jacket.D.Because it can't hide money.9.Why does the author mention 007's money belt?A.To persuade readers to learn from 007.B.To persuade readers to buy the belt worn by 007.C.To persuade tourists to hide money in their belt.D.To persuade tourists not to show others where you keep your money.10.Who is this passage written for?A.Locals.B.Tourists.C.Hotel owners.D.Thieves.11.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?A.When traveling abroad, you shouldn't open your language dictionary in public areas.B.Try your best to travel alone.C.If you hear a knock at your hotel door,go to open it.D.You can leave your money at the hotel when traveling.DThe President Goes to SchoolLast week,President Barack Obama gave a backtoschool speech to students at the Julia R.Masterman Laboratory and Demonstration School in Philadelphia,Pennsylvania. Staying out of trouble.Expand Your MindObama encouraged students to hug what makes them different.“We shouldn't be embarrassed by the things that make us different,”he said.“We should be proud of them.”He also suggested taking advantage of all of the chances at school, and always being open to trying new things.“That you're not the best at something today doesn't mean you can't be tomorrow,”he said.“Even if you don't think of yourself as a math person or as a science person—you can still excel in these subjects if you're willing to make the effort. And you may find out you have talents you'd never dreamed of.”12.Who plays the most important role in writing your life according to Obama?A.Yourself.B.Your parents.C.Nobody.D.Your teachers.13.What didn't Obama talk about when he gave speech to students?A.His own life.B.Lessons he learned from his mother.C.The secret of success.[:]D.Why he gave this speech.14.Which of the following isn't Obama's opinion?A.Students should pay attention in class.B.Students should study hard for exams.C.Students should go to school on time.D.Get into trouble and solve it by yourself.15.What's the right attitude when facing things that make people different according to Obama?A.Happy.B.Embarrassed.C.Proud.D.Sad.第二节七选五(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)Having trouble getting and maintaining good grades is a problem among many students. In cyberspace, we ’ll be able to test and evolve rules governing what needs to be governed — intellectual property, content and access control, rules about privacy and free speech. Some communities will allow anyone in: others will restrict access to members who qualify on one basis or another. Those communities that prove self-sustaining will prosper (and perhaps grow and split into subsets with ever-more-particular interests and identities). Those that can ’t survive-either because people lose interest or get scared off-will simply wither away.一种真正的市场型管理模式很快成为可能。

手惰市安逸阳光实验学校Unit 4 Cyberspace(60分钟79分)Part A一、阅读理解(共7小题;每小题2分,满分14分)AResearch has shown that first-born children are better than their kid brothers or sisters.First-borns do better on IQ tests and are more likely to become president of the United States but less likely to do drugs and so on.But why birth order appears to matter so much for school achievement level is much less clear. Many theories have been put forward, ranging from to the stable family life and to different schoolings among children.Based on long studies of data from survey,Pantano and I offer a different explanation:It comes down to parents’ reputations for maintaining discipline(维持纪律) with their kids. The basic idea is this:There are two types of parents—those who in our study we call “unforgiving” —they’ll punish children for poor school performance, regardless of the child’s birth order, and those who are “forgiving,” meaning they don’t like to punish any of their children, regardless of birth. The latter type of parents face a dilem ma.If they don’t punish their oldest child’s poor behavior, all of their children will follow suit.As a result, all of them will tend not to work hard in school. To avoid this situation, forgiving parents are strict with their first-born,hoping to convey an idea that will influence the behavior of their younger children as well. The younger children, seeing their big brother or sister punished, will be less likely to slack off(懈怠) in school because they can’t be sure that mom and dad aren’t really unforgiving type s.So the outcome of this strategic parenting is that while all children benefit from the first-born’s punishments, the influence is the greatest on the eldest child.1.According to the author,first-born children’s better performance lies in .A.personal awarenessB.school educationC.different parentingD.family background2.What is the point of the 3rd paragraph?A.To inform the readers of the basis of the research.B.To explain how the study was conducted.C.To expose the truth of the parenting problem.D.To show how parents can influence their kids.3.The best title for the passage is probably .A.Studies on raising first-bornsB.How to teach kids behave better in schoolC.Different parenting stylesD.Why first-born kids do better in school【文章大意】本文是一篇议论文,介绍为何头胎孩子胜过他们的弟弟妹妹们。
