2020年公共英语四级考试阅读模拟试题5
2020年公共英语四级考试阅读模拟试题5When one looks back upon the fifteen hundred years that are the life span of the English language, he should be able to notice a number of significant truths. The history of our language has always been a history of constant change—at times a slow, almost imperceptible change, at other times a violent collision between two languages. Our language has always been a living growing organism, it has never been static. Another significant truth that emerges from such a study is that language at all times has been the possession not of one class or group but of many. 『At one extreme it has been the property of the common, ignorant folk, who have used it in the daily business of their living, much as they have used their animals or the kitchen pots and pans.』① At the other extreme it has been the treasure of those who have respected it as an instrument and a sign of civilization, and who have struggled by writing it down to give it some permanence, order, dignity, and if possible, a little beauty. As we consider our changing language, we should note here two developments that are of special and immediate importance to us. One is that since the time of the Anglo-Saxons there has been an almost complete reversal of the different devices for showing the relationship of words in a sentence. Anglo-Saxon (old English) was a language of many inflections. Modern English has few inflections. We must now dependlargely on word order and function words to convey the meanings that the older language did by means of changes in the forms of words. Function words, you should understand, are words such as prepositions, conjunctions, and a fewothers that are used primarily to show relationships among other words. A few inflections, however, have survived. And when some word inflections come into conflict with word order, there may be trouble for the users of the language, as weshall see later when we turn our attention to such maters as WHO or WHOM and ME or I. The second fact we must consider is that as language itself changes, our attitudes towardlanguage forms change also. 『The eighteenth century, for example, produced from various sources a tendency to fix the language into patterns not always set in and grew, until atthe present time there is a strong tendency to restudy andre-evaluate language practices in terms of the ways in which people speak and write.』②1.In contrast to the earlier linguists, modern linguists tend to .A. attempt to continue the standardization of thelanguageB. evaluate language practices in terms of current speech rather than standards or proper patternsC. be more concerned about the improvement of thelanguage than its analysis or historyD. be more aware of the rules of the language usage2.Choose the appropriate meaning for the word“inflection” used in line 4 of paragraph 2.A. Changes in the forms of words.B. Changes in sentence structures.C. Changes in spelling rules.D. Words that have similar meanings.3.Which of the following statements is not mentioned in the passage?A. It is generally believed that the year 1500 can be set as the beginning of the modern English language.B. Some other languages had great influence on the English language at some stages of its development.C. The English language has been and still in a state of relatively constant change.D. Many classes or groups have contributed to the development of the English language.4. The author of these paragraphs is probably a(an) .A. historianB. philosopherC. anthropologistD. linguist5.Which of the following can be best used as the title of the passage?A. The history of the English language.B. Our changing attitude towards the English language.C. Our changing language.D. Some characteristics of modern English.。

They may even see a benefit from theirbehavior, though Copeland stresses it doesn’t vindicate(辩护)their actions.“The goal would instead be to find other ways to produce this protective effect without it being at someone else’s expense,”he says.Andrea Danese at King’s College London has previously shown that maltreatment during childhood can lead to higll levels of inflammation in adult life.“This new study is a helpful addition in showing that these effects extend to another important childhood stressor,”he says.He suggests that care workers could monitor levels of CRP in children having psychotherapy to see if it is helping to soothe the stress of being bullied.56.What do you know about CRP?A.It is a symbol of the inflammation.B.It is a symbol of cardiovascular.C. It relates directly to diabetes.D.It is a symbol of physiological effects caused by bullying.57.What does Copeland mean by saying“prior to their bullying involvement”(Line 2,Para.4)?A.Before the children bullied others.B.Before the children were bullied.C.In preference to the children’s bullying behavior.D.In preference to the children’s being bullied.58.What can be learned from paragraph 5?A. The levels of CRP of the children being bullied are much higher than their peers.B. CRP levels naturally rise along with the increase of age.C.The bullies are not blamed for the health risks of the bullied.D. Copeland intends to defend the benefit of the bullies’a ctions.59.What does Andrea Danese suggest about childhood maltreatment?A. It has nothing to do with inflammation in adult life.B.Copeland’s study shows nothing related to it.C.CRP is the marker of childhood abuse.D. It has an influence on Children’s CRP levels.60.What is the main idea of this passage?A.Bullying is harmless to children’s growth.B.CRP levels reflect the risks of poorer health.C.Bullying does harm to a person all through his life.D.Children once bullied have higher CRP levels than peers who are not.Passage TwoQuestions 61 to65 are based on thefollowingpassage. Here’s a case study for would-be MBAs to consider:the success of H Mart.an international supermarket chain basedin New Jersey(the“H”in H Mart stands for Han Ah Reum.which means“one arm full of groceries”in Korean).Tlle first H Mart opened in Queens,New York in 1982,as a corner shop. Now there are stores in 11 states,Canada andBritain.A new one recently opened in Cambridge.Massachusetts,an affluent city outside Boston. The future looks bright for Asian supermarkets like H Mart.Eamings of Asian-American households outpace the American average.Their spending exceeds all other groups, too, according to Geoscape,a consultancy. And they spend more of their money on groceries than the average America household. But Asian delicacies can be hard to come by:few Americans are likely to see durian or bamboo shoots in their local shop. Some specialty ingredients are only to be foundat a premium(高价)in up-market grocery stores,or miles away,in ethnic markets in older Asian neighborhpods.Americans have developed greater appetite for cooking and eating Asian foods,t00.In 2020 non.restaurant sales of Asian foods topped $1.5 billion, according to Mintel Group.a market.research firm.Though Latin foods are a bigger market, the popularity of Asian foods is growing faster.Once strange.seeming imports like seaweed and sashimi are now fashionable eats.Though the rate of growthis expected to fall, sales are likely to keep rising.Yet most Asian grocers have not made efforts to reach new customers, says Jeffrey Cohen,an analyst at IBIS World,an industries watcher. Many shops are located in minority enclaves, and do little to market themselves to other Americans.Cramped car parks and dingy interiors fend off customers used to the bright fluorescence(荧光)of mainstream supermarkets.Ingredients labeled with poorly-translated English Can leave shoppers bamed.A few Asian grocery chains have caught on,opening stores in more diverse suburbs, paying attention to cosmeticniceties(细节)and marketing more widely.Other than H Mart, there are Califomian chains such as 99 Ranch Market and Shun Fat Supermarket, which have been expanding to the American southwest. The former was even featured in a humorous YouTube music vide—“Asians Eat Weird Things”—which has attracted more than 900,000 hits. Those weird things may not seem so weird after all.61.What makes the future ofAsian supermarkets so bright?A.High income and spending ofAsian-AmeriCalls.B. High income ofAsians and unreachable Asian foods in local American shops.C.High expenditures of Asians on grocery.D.Low earnings of the other groups.62.What are the benefits ofAmericans’growing appetite for Asian foods?A. The increasing sales and popularity ofAsian foods.B.The expansion of Latin food market.C.The growing fondness of cooking.D.The AmeriCans’good cooking skills ofAsian foods.63.Whhat are the reasons for the unreachability ofAsian groceries to Americans?A. Many of us cannot stand pain. To avoid the pain of a drilling that may last perhaps a minute or two, we demand the “needle” that deadens(使减弱) the nerves around the tooth. Now it’s true that human body has developed millions of nerves to be highly aware of what goes on both inside and outside of it. This helps us adjust to the world. Without our nerves ---- and our brain, which is a bundle(束) of nerves ---- we wouldn’t know what’s happening. But we pay for our sensitivity. We can feel pain when the slightest thing is wrong with any part of our body. The history of torture(折磨) is based on the human body being open to pain. But there is a way to handle pain. Look at the Indian Fakir who sits on a bed of nails(钉子). Fakirs can put a needle right through an arm, and feel no pain. This ability that some humans have developed to handle pain should give us ideas about how the mind can deal with pain. The big thing in withstanding pain is our attitude towards it. If the dentist says, “This will hurt a little”, it helps us to accept the pain. By staying relaxed, and by treating the pain as an interesting sensation, we can handle the pain without falling apart. After all, although pain is an unpleasant sensation, it is still a sensation, and sensations are the stuff(东西) of life.1、The purpose of this passage is mainly to tell us ____.A. that pain is good for usB. to stop taking the “needle” at the dentistsC. how to handle painD. how to avoid torture2、The sense of pain can ____.A. let us know what’s going on in any part of our bodyB. make us open to tortureC. make us pay for our sensitivityD. help us get more sensations3、The best way to ease pain is to ____.A. do what the Indian Fakirs doB. welcome itC. know about it in advanceD. treat it as an interesting sensation4、 In the first sentence of the last paragraph the word “withstanding” probably means ____.A. acceptingB. avoidingC. handlingD. curing5、 “We pay for our sensitivity” (paragraph 2) means ____.第 5 页共 11 页A. it was fortunate for humans to have developed this sensitivityB. we suffer because of this sensitivityC. we know very well how to cope with sensations of painD. we have to pay the dentist for his treatment of our teeth第五题、阅读理解(请选出正确的选项,单选题共5小题,每题2分,共10分)Six years ago, I walked into a local animal shelter on a cold, rainy day. Although my house was already full of cats and dogs, I still couldn’t resist an occasional visit to the shelter. This time as I was walking down the row of pens full of barking dogs I noticed a small boy looking into one of them.He had a malnourished (营养不良的) looking body and a bony face with a big nose sticking out of the middle of it. He was looking at a small, golden dog. Its bony ribs were showing and its thin tail was folded between its legs. It wasn’t begging for attention like the other puppies but was hiding in the corner instead. The boy looked up at me with sad eyes and asked what was wrong with it. “It was probably abused and abandoned”, I said. “That is why it is so scared.”The boy immediately turned to an older lady and said, “Grandma, I want this one.” The old woman smiled and walked to the front desk to fill out the adoption forms. I followed and asked about the boy. I found out that he’d had a rough start in life too. She had just gotten custody(监护权) of him after the state had taken him from his parents. She had hoped getting a dog would make it easier on him. I looked back at him, holding his scared puppy, and said a prayer for them both.It was yesterday. I was driving down the road enjoying a gloriously sunny, spring day. Then in a green front yard I saw the boy. His teenage body was tall and strong. His nose no longer seemed big but fit well into his smiling face. He was throwing a ball to a healthy, happy dog with shining golden hair. But beyond the minimum requirements as social beings, they have little instinct (本能) to help one another. Chimps in the wild seek food for themselves. Even chimp mothers regularly decline to share food with their children. Who are able from a young age to gather their own food.In the laboratory, chimps don’t naturally share food either. If a chimp is put in a cage where he can pull in one plate of food for himself or, with no great effort, a plate that also provides food for a neighbor to the next cage, he will pull at random ---he just doesn’t care whether his neighbor gets fed or not. Chimps are truly selfish.Human children, on the other hand are extremely cooperative. From the earliest ages, they decide to help others, to share information and to participate an achieving common goals. The psychologist Michael Tomasello has studied this cooperativeness in a series of experiments with very young children. He finds that if babies aged 18 months see a worried adult with hands full trying to open a door, almost all will immediately try to help. There are several reasons to believe that the urges to help, inform and share are not taught, but naturally possessed in young children. One is that these instincts appear at a very young age before most parents have started to train children to behave socially. Another is that the helping behaviors are not improved if the children are rewarded. A third reason is that social intelligence. Develops in children before their general cognitive(认知的)skills, at least when compared with chimps. In tests conducted by Tomtasell, the children did no better than the chimps on the physical world tests, but were considerably better at understanding the social world. The cure of what children’s minds have and chimps’ don’t in what Tomasello calls what. You probably have eaten many of them. Love apple was the name used many years ago for the tomato. The tomato is originally an American plant. It was found in South America by early Spanish explorers. The word tomato comes from the native Nahuatl word tomatl. But when it moved north, the plant earned a different name. Remarkably, the settlers in North America thought it was poisonous. They believed that to eat it was surely to die. It was said that deserted suitors would threaten to eat a tomato to cause their coldhearted lovers regret. Because of this legend, the settlers called the tomato a “love apple”. While people enjoyed other native plants such as corn and sweet potatoes, everyone avoided the tomato. No one knows who first dared to eat a tomato. Perhaps someone was brave enough, or lovesick enough, to try out the truth of the rumors. Of course, whoever ate this fruit was perfectly safe. No one died from eating a love apple. Part II Reading Comprehension (Skimming and Scanning)Directions: In this part, you will have 15 minutes to go over the passage quickly and answer the questions on Answer sheet1.Why We LaughWe start finding things laughable — or not laughable —early in life. An infant first smiles at approximately eight days of age. Many psychologists assume this is his first sign of simple pleasure— food, warmth and comfort. At six months or less, the infant laughs to express complex pleasures—such as the light of Mother's smiling face. Between the ages ofsix months and one year, the baby learns to laugh for essentially the same reasons he will laugh throughout his life, says Dr. Jacob Levine, associate professor of psychology at Yale University. Dr. Levine says that peoplelaugh to express mastery over an anxiety. Picture what happens when a father throws his child into the air. Thechild will probably laugh—but not the first time. In spiteof his enjoyment of "flying", he is too anxious to laugh. How does he know Daddy will catch him? Once the child realizes he will be caught, he is free to enjoy the game. But more importantly, says Dr. Levine, the child laughs because he has mastered an anxiety.Adult laughter is more subtle, but we also laugh at what we used to fear. The feeling of achievement, or lack of it, remains a crucial factor. Giving a first dinner party is an anxious event for a new bride. Will the food be good? Willthe guests get along? Will she be a good hostess? Will the knives and forks, cups and saucers be all right? All goes well; the party is over. Now she laughs freely. Her pleasure from having proved her success is the foundation for her pleasure in recalling the evening activities. She couldn't enjoy the second pleasure without the first, more important one—her mastery of anxiety.Laughter is a social response triggered by cues.Scientists have not determined a brain center for laughter, and they are perplexed by patients with certain types ofbrain damage who go into laughing fits for no apparent reason. The rest of us require company, and a reason to laugh. When we find ourselves alone in a humorous situation, our usual response is to smile. Isn't it hue that our highest compliment to a humorous book is to say that "it made melaugh out of loud"? Of course, we do occasionally laugh alone;but when we do, we are, in a sense, socializing with ourselves. We laugh at a memory, or at a part of ourselves.Of course, we don't always need a joke to make us laugh. People who survive frightening situations, such as a fire oran emergency plane landing, frequently relate their story of the crisis with laughter. Part of the laughter express relief that everything is now all right. During a crisis, definitely, everyone mobilizes energy to deal with the potential problem. If the danger is avoided, we need to release that energy. Some people cry; others laugh. When we are made the target of a joke, either on apersonal or impersonal level, we are emotionally involved in it. Consequently, we won't be able to laugh.Knowing that laughter blunts emotion, we can better understand why we sometimes laugh when nothing is funny. We laugh during moments of anxiety because we feel no masteryover the situation, claims Dr. Levine. He explains, "veryoften compulsive laughter is a learned response. If we laugh, it expresses good feelings and the fact that we are able to cope. When we're in a situation in which we can't cope, we laugh to reassure ourselves that we can!"How often have we laughed at a funeral or upon hearingbad news? We laugh to deny an unendurable reality until weare strong enough to accept it. Laughter also breaks our tension. However, we may also be laughing to express relief that the tragedy didn't happen to us. We laugh before givinga big party, before delivering a speech, or while getting a traffic ticket, to say, "This isn't bothering me. See? I am laughing."。

A multitude of factors, both inherited and environmental, influence the development of health related behaviors, and it is beyond the scope of this text to discuss all these factors as they may affect any given individual. However, the decision to adopt a particular health-related behavior is usually one of personal choices. There are healthy choices and there are unhealthy choices. In discussing the moral of personal choice,Fries and Crapo drew a comparison.[ZZ(Z]They suggest that to knowingly give oneself over to a behavior that has a statistical probability of shortening life is similar to attempting suicide.[ZZ)]Thus, for those individuals who are interested in preserving both the quality and quantity of life, personal health choices should reflect those behaviors that are associated with statistical probability of increased vitality and longevity.11. READING COMPREHENSION Questions 71 to 75 are based on the following passage: British Columbia is the third largest Canadian province, both in areaand population. It is nearly 1.5 times as large as Texas, and extends 800miles (1,280 km) north from the United States border. It includes Canada'sentire west coast and the islands just off the coast. Most of British Columbia is mountainous, with long, rugged ranges runningnorth and south. Even the coastal islands are the remains of a mountain rangethat existed thousands of years ago. During the last Ice Age, this range wasscoured by glaciers until most of it was beneath the sea. Its peaks now showas islands scattered along the coast. The southwestern coastal region has a humid mild marine climate. Seawinds that blow inland from the west are warmed by a current of warm waterthat flows through the Pacific Ocean. As a result, winter temperaturesaverage above freezing and summers are mild. These warm western winds alsocarry moisture from the ocean. Inland from the coast, the winds from the Pacific meet the mountainbarriers of the coastal ranges and the Rocky Mountains. As they rise tocross the mountains, the winds are cooled, and their moisture begins tofall as rain. On some of the western slopes almost 200 inches (500 cm)of rain fall each year. More than half of British Columbia is heavily forested. On mountainslopes that receive plentiful rainfall, huge Douglas firs rise in toweringcolumns. These forest giants often grow to be as much as 300 feet (90 m)tall, with diameters up to 10 feet (3 m)。

Yet 24 about grinding poverty, hunger, and dreadful need proceed more from the United States than from countries with one-fortieth of their living standard. An annual per capita income of eight dollars is 25 of much of Africa and Asia and not a little of South America. It would seem strange to these people 26 they only aware of the fact that American radicals demand a 27 from an American 28 to the far corners of the globe so that the money thus saved can be spent raising the standard of living of 29 Americans. What this last point suggests is not so much that human 30 are never to be satisfied though this is doubtlessly true, and the American suburbanite 31 of his second car and his color TV suffers just as 32 as an African farmer in need of a second cow and a screen door. Rather, it suggests the 33 of contemporary breach of social 34 —the emancipation of the individual self.People have learned to consider any 35 to personal fulfillment an 36 insult. Passage OneSustainable development is applied to just about everything from energy to clean water and economic growth, and as a result it has bee difficult to question either the basic assumptions behind it or the way the concept is putto use. This is especially true in agriculture, where sustainable development is often taken as the sole measureof progress without a proper appreciation of historical and cultural perspectives. To start with, it is important to remember that the nature of agriculture has changed markedly throughout history, and will continue to do so .medieval agriculturein northern Europe fed, clothed and sheltered a predominantly rural society with a much lower population density than it is today. It had minimal effect on biodiversity, and any pollution it caused was typically localized. In terms of energy use and the nutrientscaptured in the product it was relatively inefficient.Contrast this with farming since the start of the industrial revolution. Competition from overseas ledfarmers to specialize and increase yields. Throughout this period food became cheaper, safe and more reliable. However, these changes have also led to habitat(栖息地)loss and to diminishing biodiversity. What’s more, demand for animal products in developing countries is growing so fast that meeting it will require an extra 300 million tons of grain a year by 2050.yet the growth of cities and industry is reducing the amount of water available for agriculture in many regions. All this means that agriculture in the 21stcentury will have to be very different from how it was in the20th.thiswill require radical thinking. For example, we need to move away from the idea that traditional practices are inevitably more sustainable than new ones. We also need to abandon the notion that agriculture can be “zero impact”. The key will be to abandon the rather simple and static measures of sustainability, which centre on the need to maintain production without increasing damage.Instead we need a more dynamic interpretation, one that looks at the pros and cons(正反两方面)of all the various way land is used. There are many different ways to measure agricultural performance besides food yield: energy use, environmental costs, water purity, carbon footprint and biodiversity. It is clear, for example, that the carbon of transporting tomatoes from Spain to the UK is less thanthat of producing them in the UK with additional heatingand lighting. But we do not know whether lower carbon footprints will always be better for biodiversity. What is crucial is recognizing that sustainable agriculture is not just about sustainable food production.1. How do people often measure progress in agriculture?A) By its productivity C) By its impact on the environmentB) By its sustainability D) By its contribution to economic growth2. Specialisation and the effort to increase yields have resulted in.A) Localised pollution C) petition from overseasB) the shrinking of farmland D) the decrease of biodiversity3. What does the author think of traditional farming practices?A) They have remained the same over the centuries B) They have not kept pace with population growthC) They are not necessarily sustainable D) They are environmentally friendly4. What will agriculture be like in the 21st centuryA) It will go through radical changes B) It will supply more animal productsC) It will abandon traditional farming practices D) It will cause zero damage to the environment5 What is the author’s purpose in writing this passage?A) To remind people of the need of sustainable developmentB) To suggest ways of ensuring sustainable food productionC) To advance new criteria for measuring farming progressD) To urge people to rethink what sustainableagriculture isPassage TwoHawaii's native minority is demanding a greater degreeof sovereignty over its own affairs. But much of the archipelago's political establishment, which includes the White Americans who dominated until the second world warand people of Japanese, Chinese and Filipino origins, is opposed to the idea. The islands were annexed by the US in 1898 and since then Hawaii's native peoples have fared worse than any ofits other ethnic groups. They make up over 60 percent ofthe state's homeless, suffer higher levels of unemployment and their life span is five years less than the average Hawaiians. They are the only major US native group without some degree of autonomy. But a sovereignty advisory mittee set up by Hawaii'sfirst native governor, Joahn Waihee, has given the natives'cause a major boost by remending that the Hawaiian natives decide by themselves whether to reestablish a sovereign Hawaiian nation.。
