- quite often these senior members don’t get formal team training - strong individualism makes it difficult to function as a team - team leader is often a senior manager
LEAD OTHERS TO LEAD THEMSELVES:
Team are effective because accountability is self-imposed and self-regulated The team leader plays a major role in developing initiative and accountability - setting examples - helping to build commitment to the team - encouraging challenging goals
PROVIDE AND SUPPORT TEAM VISION:
Any group that is directing its effort towards a common goal works best with someone providing, reinforcing or guiding the development of a common and unifying vision or purpose. Even in the absence of a formal leader, group tends to gravitate toward an informal designation of one person as a leader.
Act as ambassador to the groups Provide a means for team to obtain needed resources. Help protect the team from adverse action from other components of the organization.
Norming
- developing ways to interact effectively - development of interpersonal and team rule of behavior - team may find it easy to temporarily put aside the zeal to get things done
Self directed work teams are designed to work with out supervisor
- team leader is a team member selected by the team manager or by the whole team - they have both management and administrative responsibilities
Cross functional work teams bring people together with unique individual skills and or experience.
- strength comes from ability to work on completed process by having all the skills needed on the ATION AND FOCUS:
Group dynamics can cause team disintegration. Help the group maintain focus and make progress toward stated goals.
LINK THE TEAM WITH THE REST OF THE ORGANIZATION:
2. The role of the team leader is evolutionary not static.
Five major functions of team leader:
Provide and support the team’s vision Maintain organizational and focus Link the team with the rest of the organization. Help maintain the social and cultural health of the team Lead others to lead themselves

Work Group are often called teams
- with common shared goals
Performing
- teamwork is the dominant characteristic - people are working effectively to a common purpose

Project teams and task groups are usually temporary
- leader’s role is important as the team don’t have a long history - lack of strong leadership makes the team spin its wheel
FOUR STAGES OF TEAM:
Forming
- members are cautious and noncommittal - little tends to get accomplished
Storming
- competitiveness is often accompanied by frenetic activity - temporarily higher accomplishment, but with high levels of frustration - can often lead to severe questioning of the team concept
