Children are naturally curious about the world around them. When Chase Hansen was only4years old, he encountered homeless people for the first time while shopping with his dad at an outdoor mall in Salt Lake City,Nevada. It’s no wonder that he had a lot of questions.
“Chase looked at me and said,‘Dad,who are these people? Why don’t they have a place to stay?’”John Hansen recalled.“After I explained that they had run into hard times and were homeless,I knew that we were looking at an educational opportunity. My son wanted to help them.”
The father and son convinced a local Jamba Juice store to donate more than100smoothies(果汁)and the pair gave them out to homeless people in a park.
After that, they came up with an even better idea.“I wanted a way to get to know people better,“Chase said.”So,my dad and I decided to start taking some of the homeless people we’d met out to lunch.
“A lot of people walk right past homeless people and don’t see the person,”he said.“I know now that they’re people just like us.They want to make a connection and not feel so alone in the world.”
Hundreds of lunches later, they run a self-funded charity called Project Empathy(同情)to help inspire others to meet and to create relationships with the homeless people in their neighborhoods. The organization provides a list of resources that can help homeless people with food, housing and employment.
John said that what started as a way to spend quality time with his son has turned into a passion for both of them.“Chase and I realized that the country needed an army of people to practice empathy, and that by doing something as simple as taking a homeless person to lunch,we could maybe inspire others to do the same,”he said.“Any time you can help to give someone a voice,it’s empowering.

Bard,Kinetic(Coffee House Press,2023)by Anne Waldman, one of the most important living American poets,is a new collection of autobiographical(自传体的)pieces, including published and unpublished essays, correspondence, interviews, and poems from the last20years.
Though the origin of the texts and poems is relatively recent,Bard,Kinetic tracks Waldman’s life from her childhood in Greenwich Village to the present.Rather than a memoir(回忆录),this energetic collection integrates her stories into contexts—literary, political, spiritual, familial.
In Sketch, the first and longest piece in the book,Waldman describes what guided her to poetry from an early age—Her intellectual and artistic parents encouraged her“to read widely,to write, think, talk about it,be curious and critical.”Reading Sketch for its wonderful autobiographical details and the successful moments that run through Waldman’s life is a pleasure. In Interview with Poetas,Madrid2018, another piece from the book’s second section, she wrote,“We need cultural and humanitarian revolution. We need poetry to remind us of the magic we have had that needs attendance and recharge.”Her voice and vision have a collective width.
Waldman insists on combining art with nearly every aspect of her life.Bard,Kinetic,at all points,a high-energy construct, and at all points,an energy-discharge,puts readers on the path to recognizing poetry
as a mental aid,as an action that reaches across geography, species, and time.As she wrote in the book’s preface, she commands herself to“keep pushing for knowledge, study with a deeper investigation and a deeper action. The action, totally necessary”.These are high aims that Waldman has insisted on,tirelessly, her entire life.Waldman shines. Her heart could be our heart.
This new book is best read as a companion of Vow to Poetry(2001),Waldman’s previous collection of interviews and autobiographical essays, which will help readers appreciate this book better.

D.It is to be issued by Coffee House Press.
6.What’s the purpose of paragraph3?
A.To introduce Waldman’s writing styles
B.To add relevant background information.
C.To help readers gain partial insight into the book.
D.To persuade readers to conduct selective reading.
7.What is implied in the underlined sentence“Her heart could be our heart.”in paragraph4?
A.We should stick to our goals.
B.We should learn poems by heart.
C.We should seek fame and wealth.
D.We should enjoy life to our hearts’content.
8.What’s the text?
A.A diary entry.

C
Environmental conditions experienced by parent plants can influence offspring performance through parental effects induced(感应的)by DNA.The offspring can also be influenced by environmental conditions experienced by their parents via soil legacy(遗产)effects due to changes in the composition of soil.
We conducted a two-phase experiment with five genotypes(基因型)of a clonal plant. In the first phase, we grew parent plants of each genotype under two light conditions and two DNA treatments. We then collected soils and clonal offspring for each genotype from each of these four treatments and measured soil
properties. In the second phase,we grew the offspring from each of the four treatments in the four different soils, under the two light conditions.
When grown under environmental light condition and in soil from environmental parents, offspring produced by environmental parents grew larger than offspring produced by shaded parents when the parents were treated with water. This difference was smaller when the parents were treated with5-7°C,and disappeared when the offspring were grown in soil from shaded parents. The growth difference was also observed when the offspring were grown under shaded condition and in soil from shaded parents. However, this difference was greater when the parents were treated with5-7°C,and disappeared when the offspring were grown in soil from environmental parents.
Our results show that light condition experienced by parents can influence offspring responses to light through both parental effects and soil legacies. The parental effects were mediated(调节)by changes in DNA and the soil legacies. These impacts may eventually influence the ecological and evolutionary track of clonal plant populations.
9.What is the text mainly about?
A.Environmental conditions are important to offspring performance.
B.Offspring performance can be controlled by DNA and the soil legacies.
C.Light condition experienced by parents can influence offspring responses to light.
D.Environmental conditions experienced by parent plants can influence offspring.
10.How did the researchers get the result?
A.They conducted an experiment.
B.They carried out a survey.
C.They analyzed existing data.
D.They collected information from others.
11.What can we learn from Paragraph3?
A.Growth difference only happens under environmental light condition.
B.Growth difference varies when parents are treated with5-7°C under different conditions.
C.No growth difference appears when offspring are grown in soil from shaded parents.
D.Offspring of environmental parents grow smaller than offspring of shaded parents.
12.Where is the text most likely from?
A.A diary.
B.A magazine.
C.A novel.
D.A notebook.

On Saturday morning, the two boys decided to climb Cathedral Mountain by themselves while their parents relaxed at the campsite. After three hours, they reached the top and enjoyed the beautiful view from the mountaintop.
However, trouble began when they started the climb down.On one very dangerous part of the mountain,Ian fell three meters off the side of the path.Jeremy climbed down to where Ian was and found him badly injured and not able to move then.Jeremy had to decide what to do.He needed help but he did not want to leave his friend. He cleaned the dirt and blood from Ian’s face and hands, and then tried to help Ian stand up,but Ian’s right leg was hurting too much. With incredible calmness and his former experience in the mountain,Jeremy then gave Ian his food and water and let him lie on his jacket. They had to wait
and hope that help would come. While they waited for help,Jeremy used his jacket and an extra shirt to keep Ian warm and they rested together.Sensing his friend’s pain and anxiety,Jeremy gently comforted him and gave him constant encouragement in a determined tone.
Meanwhile,as darkness started to fall, their parents back at the campsite became very worried that the boys had not returned.Desperate tears welling up in the eyes, the mothers frantically prayed to God for their sons’safety. They got in touch with park workers and began searching for the boys.Soon more than 20people were looking for them on Cathedral Mountain.

第二节
As the evening grew darker and the temperature dropped,Ian told Jeremy to leave him and go back to their parents. But Jeremy still did not leave. He thought it was too dangerous for Ian to be alone on such a cold, windy night. However, with the surroundings from chilly to freezing,Jeremy decided that the only way to help his friend was to carry him down the mountain. So,they started the long climb back to the campsite.Sometimes Jeremy carried Ian on his back.Sometimes he carried him in his arms.
Finally, after four long and tiring hours’climbing down, they came across their parents.Upon seeing the two boys, their parents dashed to wrap them in their arms. All the fear, cold and even pain were seemingly driven away by the reunion with their parents.Jeremy and Ian burst into tears, sobbing out what had happened in this adventure. On the way to the hospital,Ian held on tight to Jeremy’s hand, saying,“I’ll always remember what you did for me.You saved my life.”Jeremy winked at him with a smiling face,“That’s the greatest thing that a person can do for his friend.”
