Becky Schroeder was only 10 years old when she came up with the idea of the glow-paper. Two years later, in 1974, her invention was patented (获得专利) and she became the youngest girl to ever receive a patent in the United States.
The idea came to her when she tried to do her homework in the family car. It was getting dark, and she couldn't see her notebook very well. She didn't have a flashlight and imagined how nice it would be to have a paper that glows (发光) in the dark and allows her to write easily without light. She decided to invent a product that would do just like that. She researched "glow in the dark" toys, such as bails and Frisbees. She wanted to know how they worked. Finally, she found out they all used phosphorescent (鳞光性) paint which can store light and then give out a glow in the dark. Then she went with her dad to buy some phosphorescent paint. In the darkest room in her house, she spent the evening trying with the paint and some paper, until she got it.
Her invention the glow-paper includes a board with phosphorescent paint that stores light and then glows in the dark. Once a piece of paper is placed on it, it glows and you can see your writing or read without the need of a proper light.
