Unit 2 Charlie Chaplin
录音原文
Section A
11. W: I’ve been learning English for a long time, but I still can’t speak English well. I
really feel depressed.
M: Rome wasn’t built in a day. Like everything else, you need to practice and practice before you can speak well.
Q: What does the man suggest the woman do?
12. W: Why do we come to such an expensive restaurant? Is there any thing special?
M: How could you ever forget that! Today is our ten-year’s wedding anniversary.
Q: Why does the man invite the woman?
13. W: I lost a big sum of money investing in the Internet. How are your stocks doing,Jim?
M: Oh, all right. I lost a bunch of money in the last two years, but this year has been pretty good.
Q: What can we learn from the conversation?
14. W: The final exam will be held at the end of this month.. Have you made good
preparation?
M: I’m one hundred percent certain. I’ve reviewed all the lessons I’ve learned this academic year.
Q: How does the man feel about the exam?
15. W: It’s my turn to have a free talk, but I’m sorry I forgot to prepare for it.
M: Well, do remember to perform your duty next time. OK? Now let’s get down to our text books.
Q: What does the man ask the woman to do?
16. W: Would you recommend some materials on the World WarⅡ?
M: Maybe you can find something from the New York Times or the Washington Post during that period.
Q: What does the man suggest the woman do?
17. W: Sorry, I overslept. My alarm clock didn’t go off this morning. If it breaks down
tomorrow, I’ll definitely buy a new one.
M: Maybe by then it will be too late. By that time you will be fired.
Q: What does the man imply about the woman?
18. W: I just came to this county. I’d like to apply for a credit card. Can you help me with
my application?
M: I’d be glad to. Please fill in this sheet of paper first.
Q: What’s the man’s job?
Conversation One
M: Hi, Larry, are you waiting to see Professor Jameson, too?
W: Y ah, since I got one of the five highest grades in her managerial economics class, she asked me if I’d be interested in working as her assistant next semester. I am coming for an interview.
M: I know all about that job. I did it two years ago.
W: Really? Did you like it?
M: I think it was the best I’ve had at school. It paid eight dollars an hour which was three dollars higher than I ever earned as a tutor.
W: That is a good salary. What did you do?
M: I was in charge of grading all the problem sets that were assigned as homework.
W: I think I’d enjoy doing that sort of work. It would be very good experience for anyone thinking about becoming a teacher.
M: Absolutely. Y ou also learn how to use the computer database and build up your computer skills.
W: The job sounds great, but I’m a little worried about how much time it might take.
M: It’s pretty reasonable. It never took me more than five hours a week to do all the grading and then another thirty to forty minute to record the grades on the computer.
W: That sounds manageable.
M: Oh, yah, you just need to get each set back for the next class, but that means you always have at least two days and sometimes four.
W: It sounds great.

Conversation Two
W: I just finished reading a book of short story by Hemlen Garlen called May Traveled Road. I really enjoy it. Have you ever read it?
M: Y es, it was a required reading in American literature course I took last year. Even though it’s fiction, you get a realistic picture of the hard life people had on American froniter. I don’t think I would survive the 19th century frontier life.
W: Me neither. Remember that story among the car roads. Garlen gives a vivid description of Julie Peterson, that young immigrant girl; she had to work on her family farm.
M: Ah ha.
W: Well, when Julie feels exhausted, and she is wishing she can escape from her hard labor, she looks over her father working in the next field. And she is inspired to continue her own work..
M: I do remember that story. Garlen really captures the spirit of hard work that was so typical of immigrants and pioneers who settled the American Midwest. It’s difficult to imagine that nothing seems to discourage them for long.
W: I wonder how Garlen learned so much about the Midwest. Was he from Boston?
M: He lived in Boston. In fact, he studied and taught in Boston School of Oritory, but I think he was born in Lawcarbinlen, Wisconsin. He did grow up in Midwest.
W: No wonder his description is so good, I’m going to take this book back to the library now and borrow what other Garlen’s works I can find.

If you have been on campus for very long, I’m certain that you’ve already heard about this course. Y ou may know that last semester about fifty percent of the students enrolled in my course failed it. Let me explain how this came about before you jump to any conclusions. In the first place, since this is a composition class, I expect my students to follow certain rules of formality. Unfortunately, many students today dislike having to follow rules of any kind, especially those that they may feel unnecessary. For example I ask that each of your papers be typed and centered on the paper correctly. I count off points for various kinds of mistakes. A misspelled word will cost you 5 points. Y ou’ve lost 25 points if you misspelled 5 words. If you write incomplete sentences, you’ve lost 10 points. If you give me two complete sentences as one without adequate punctuation, you’ve lost 15 points. I do not accept late papers. Y ou will receive a zero for any theme which you fail to submit on time. I expect you to read each assignment. To make certain that you have read the assignment, I will give you a short unannounced quize from time to time. This class meets on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Y ou will have a total of six major tests throughout the semester. Y our final grade will be based on an average of these major tests, the pop tests and eight written themes. If you have any questions at any time, you can see me on Tuesdays.
Questions 32 to 35 are based on the passage you have just heard.

Einstein and Chaplin
Albert Einstein(1879-1955)is one of the greatest and most influential scientists and thinkers in the 20th century, who was born in Germany ,lived and worked in the United States since 1933. He is best known for his theory of relativity, which he first advanced in 1905 when he was only 25. In 1921 Einstein won the Noble Prize in physics primarily for his pioneer work in photoelectric theory. Einstein is also one of the few scientists whose work has helped change man’s view of the world.
Charlie Chaplin(1889-1977)is one of the most outstanding and popular comics in the 20th century, who came from Britian and became the most famous actor in the early to mid Hollywood silent cinema era. His principal character was “the Tramp”: a vagrant with the refined manners and dignity of a gentleman who wears a tight coat, oversized trousers and shoes, a bowler hat, a bamboo cane, and his signature toothbrush moustache, which made him well-known in the world.
Here is an interesting story about the two famous men.
Einstein was a great admirer of Charlie Chaplin’s films. Once, in a letter to Chaplin he said:“Everybody in the world can understand your film‘The Modern Times’.Y ou’ll certainly
become a great man.. Einstein.”
In his answer to this letter Charlie Chaplin wrote:“I admire you even more. Nobody in the world understands your Theory of Relativity, but you have already become a great man. Chaplin.”
