is a land of bicycles. At least it was back in 1992 when I trave led the country. Back then every one seemed to be riding a bi cycle. Millions of them , all black. Cars were rare. Yet since m y arrival in last year , I’ve found the opposite is true. There ar e millions of cars. However , people still use their bicycles to g et around. For many , it’s the easiest and cheapest way to tra vel today. Bicycles also come in different colors---
silver, green, red, blue, yellow, whatever you want.
It’s fun watching people biking. They rush quickly through cr ossroads , move skillfully through traffic , and ride even on sid ewalks. Bicycles allow people the freedom to move about that cars just can’t provide.
Eager to be part of this aspect of Chinese culture , I decided to buy a bicycle. Great weather accompanied my great buy. I i mmediately jumped up on my bicycle seat and started home. My first ride home was orderly. To be safe , I stayed with a “pack” of bikers while cars on the streets came running swiftly out of nowhere at times. I didn’t want to get hit. So I took the ri de carefully.
Crossing the streets was the biggest problem. It was a lot lik e crossing a major highway back in the . The streets here wer e wide, so crossing took time , skill and a little bit of luck.
I finally made it home. The feeling on the bicycle was amazin g. The air hitting my face and going through my hair was won derful. I was sitting on top of the world as I passed by places and people. Biking made me feel alive.
According to the author , why are bicycles still popular in toda y?
A. Because they are traditional and safe.
B. Because they are convenient and inexpensive.
C. Because they are colorful and available.
D. Because they are fast and environment friendly.
26.The author decided to buy a bicycle because he intended_ _____.
A. to ride it for fun
B. to use it for transport
C. to experience local culture
D. to improve his riding skills
27.How did the author feel about his street crossing?
A. It was boring.
B. It was difficult
C. It was lively.
D. It was wonderful.
28.Which of the following best describes the author’s biking e
xperience?
A. The author enjoyed showing off his biking skills.
B. The author was annoyed by the air while riding.
C. The author was praised by the other bikers.
D. The author took great pleasure in biking.

We are all interested in equality, but while some people try to protect the school and examination system in the name of eq uality, others, still in the name of equality, want only to destroy it.
Any society which is interested in equality of opportunity and s tandards of achievement must regularly test its pupils. The sta ndards may be changed—no examination is perfect—
but to have no tests or examinations would mean the end of e quality and of standards. There are groups of people who opp ose this view and who do not believe either in examinations or in any controls in schools or on teachers. This would mean th at everything would depend on luck since every pupil would d epend on the efficiency, the values and the purpose of each t eacher.
Without examinations, employers will look for employees from the highly respected schools and from families known to the m—
a form of favoritism will replace equality. At the moment, the
b right child from an ill-
respected school can show certificates to prove he or she is s uitable for a job, while the lack of certificate indicates the unsu
itability of a dull child attending a well-
respected school. This defense of excellence and opportunity would disappear if examinations were taken away, and the bri ght child from a poor family would be a prisoner of his or her s chool’s reputation, unable to compete for employment with th e child from the favored school.
The opponents of the examination system suggest that exami nations are an evil force because they show differences betw een pupils. According to these people, there must be no speci al, different, academic class. They have even suggested that t here should be no form of difference in sport or any other are a: all jobs or posts should be filled by unsystematic selection. The selection would be made by people who themselves are probably selected by some computer.
33. The word “favoritism” in paragraph 3 is used to describe t he phenomenon that ________.
A. bright children also need certificates to get satisfying jobs
B. poor children with certificates are favored in job markets
C. children from well-
respected schools tend to have good jobs
D. children attending ordinary schools achieve great succes
s
34. What would happen if examinations were taken away acc ording to the author?
A. Children’s job opportunity would be affected by their school reputation
B. Schools for bright children would lose their reputation.
C. There would be more opportunities and excellence.
D. Children from poor families would be able to change their s chools.
35. The passage mainly focuses on ________.
A. schools and certificates
B. opportunity and employment
C. standards and reputation
D. examination and equality

Eager to be part of this aspect of Chinese culture , I decided to buy a bicycle. Great weather accompanied my great buy. I immediately jumped up on my bicycle seat and started home.
My first ride home was orderly. To be safe , I stayed with a “pack” of bikers while cars on th e streets came running swiftly out of nowhere at times. I didn’t want to get hit. So I took the ri de carefully.
Crossing the streets was the biggest problem. It was a lot like crossing a major highway bac k in the . The streets here were wide, so crossing took time , skill and a little bit of luck.
I finally made it home. The feeling on the bicycle was amazing. The air hitting my face and g oing through my hair was wonderful. I was sitting on top of the world as I passed by places a nd people. Biking made me feel alive.
