One night while the American unit was returning to the base after a bloody fight, Suleyman stumbled(绊倒) into the ground and noticed a bit of movement from the bush. Being stuck between two choices either its enemy or an animal, Suleyman found a five-year-old girl from the bushes
her family and the whole village was killed.
During the war, it was impossible to find the child's family so Suleyman took this little French girl under his wings and gave her an American name Flora which means like the flower. Soon, Flora became the apple of the eye of everyone living in the army camp.
For one and a half years, Flora and Suleyman became inseparable; however, every fairy tale comes to an end. When the war ended, Suleyman was sent back to USA, while Flora was put in an orphanage(孤儿院), the Normandy School, which was founded by the American government for orphaned French children to have an education.
For years, Suleyman always thought about Flora. When the French National Olympic Team was playing in the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles in 1984, Suleyman gazed through the audience on TV, hoping to catch a glimpse of Flora, but he never could.
At the age of 85, Suleyman attended the 60th anniversary reception of the Great War where Suleyman shared his story with American and French officials. An inventor, physicist, surveyor, astronomer, biologist, artist...Robert Hooke was all these and more. Some say he was the greatest experimental scientist of the 17th century. In the course of his work, he cooperated with famous men of science like Isaac Newton, and the great architect, Christopher Wren.
Hooke's early education began at home, under the guidance of his father. He entered the Westminster School at the age of 14, and from there he went to Oxford, where he came in contact with some of the best scientists in England. Hooke impressed them with his skill at designing experiments and inventing instruments. In 1662, at the age of 27, he was named the Curator of Experiments at the newly formed the Royal Society of London-meaning that he was responsible for demonstrating new experiments at the society's weekly meeting. Hooke accepted the job, even though he knew that the society had no money to pay him!
Watching living things through a microscope was one of his favorite pastimes. He invented a compound microscope for this purpose. One day while observing cork(软木) under a microscope, he saw honeycomb-like structures. There were cells-the smallest unit of life. In fact, it was Hooke who invented the term "cell" as the box-like cells of the cork reminded him of the cells of a monastery(修道院).
Another achievement of Hooke was his book Micrographia, which introduces the enormous potential of the microscope. It contains fascinating drawings of the thing he saw under the microscope.
The book also includes, among other things, ideas on gravity, light and combustion(燃烧) that may have helped scientists like Newton when they were developing their own theories on these phenomena.
Hooke made a valuable contribution to astronomy too. A crater on the moon is named after him in honour of his service to this branch of science.

B. In 1634.
C. In 1662.
D. In 1640.
30. Which is the possible reason that Hooke accepted the job as the Curator of Experiments?
A. He liked designing experiments.
B. He wanted to push back the frontiers of science.
C. He wanted to please the famous scientists in England.
D. Other superb scientists weren't interested in the position.
31. What does the last paragraph prove?
A. Hooke was the greatest experimental scientist of the 17th century.
B. Hooke was good at making discoveries.
C. Hooke's contributions were not limited to one field.
D. Hooke was one of the greatest astronomers.

The health of millions could be at risk because supplies of medicinal plants are being used up. These plants are used to make traditional medicine, including drugs to fight cancer. "The loss of medicinal plants is a quiet disaster," says Sara Oldfield, secretary general of the Botanic Gardens Conservation International.
Most people worldwide rely on herbal(药草的) medicines which are got mostly from wild plants. But some 15,000 of the 50,000 medicinal species are under threat of dying out, according to a report from the international conservation group Plantlife. Shortages have been reported in China, India, Kenya, Nepal, Tanzania and Uganda.
Over-harvesting does the most harm, though pollution and competition from invasive species(入侵物种) and habitat destruction all contribute. "Businessmen generally harvest medicinal plants, not
caring about sustainability(可持续性)," the Plantlife report says. "Damage is serious partly because they have no idea about it, but it is mainly because such collection is unorganized." Medicinal trees at risk include the Himalayan yew and the African cherry, which are used to treat some cancers.
The solution, says the report's author, Alan Hamilton, is to encourage local people to protect these plants. Ten projects ran by Plantlife in India, Pakistan, China, Nepal, Uganda and Kenya showed this method can succeed. In Uganda, the project has kept a sustainable supply of low-cost cancer treatments, and in China a public-run medicinal plant project has been created for the first time.
"Improving health, earning an income and keeping cultural traditions are important in encouraging people to protect medicinal plants," says Hamilton. "You have to pay attention to what people are interested in."
Ghillean Prance, the former director of the Royal Botanic Gardens in London, insists that medicinal plants are in need of protection. "Not nearly enough is being done. We are destroying the very plants that are of most use to us."
32. What can we learn from the first two paragraphs?
A. Millions of people are threatened with cancer.
B. Most countries see a shortage of herbal medicines.
C. About two thirds of medicinal species will disappear.
D. A number of medicinal species are in danger of extinction.
33. What does the underlined word "it" in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Pollution.
B. Sustainability.
C. Over-harvesting.
D. Other species' invasion.
34. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. Protecting medicinal plants has a long way to go.
B. Local people don't know how to protect medicinal plants.
C. Ghillean Prance is optimistic about medicinal plants' future.
D. China has made great progress in protecting medicinal plants.
35. Which of the following is the best title of the passage?
A. Low-Cost Cancer Treatment
B. The Importance of Sustainability
C. Medicinal Plants Facing Extinction
D. Sustainable Development of the Environment

Daily Habits of Naturally Productive People
When it comes to being more efficient at your job, you know the basics. But research shows a whole new side of productivity you may not have realized. 36
Focus on being happier.
37 Even if a low mood does not completely disable you from functioning, it can decrease your productivity to make you far less efficient. Also, don't hesitate to seek help. Not only will this help you achieve a more stable work-life balance, but anew outlook can also open you up to new opportunities and necessary changes.
Prioritize fitness.
You know the countless benefits of exercise. 38 Even30-minute moderate-to-high physical activity just three to four times a day can go a long way in helping you accomplish your personal and professional goals. If you're really not a fan of the gym, join a group class to keep yourself motivated.
39
Pressing pause is important. Studies show that prolonged tasks that require high levels of focus, energy, and attention can cause you to become less productive and focused over time. Take brief mental breaks. When we take "healthy breaks", we are much more focused and engaged in our next work; in contrast, when we try to work continually on a project without breaks, our quality of work tends to deteriorate.
Don't try to do everything at once.
People believe the more we can do at once, the better. 40 In fact, the more we multitask, the less efficient and productive we become. Instead, to increase productivity, focus on one task at a time until it's completed and then give all of your attention to the next task.
A. Take breaks at times.
B. Make productivity first.
C. However, research shows the opposite.
D. Studies find happier people are more productive.
E. Have a look at these habits of naturally productive people.
F. It improves your mood and increases your brain's productivity.
G. Research shows that daylight improves your levels of activity.
