Ⅳ.阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)
A
The oldest stone buildings in the world are the pyramids(金字塔).They have stood for nearly 5000 years, and it seems likely that they will continue to stand for
thousands of years yet. There are over eighty of them scattered (散布) along the banks of the Nile, some of which are different in shape from the true pyramids. The most famous of these are the “Step” pyramid and the “Bent” pyramid.
Some of the pyramids still look as much alike as they must have been when they were built thousands of years ago. Most of the damage suffered by the others has been at the hands of men who were looking for treasure or,more often, for stones to use in modern buildings. The dry climate of Egypt has helped to keep the pyramids in good condition, and their very shape has made them less likely to fall into ruin. These are good reasons why they can still be seen today, but perhaps the most important is that they were planned to last forever.
The “Step” pyramid had to be on the west side of the Nile, the side on which the sun set. This was for spiritual reasons. It also had to stand well above the level of the river to protect it against the regular floods. It could not be too far from the Nile, however,as the stones to build it needed to be carried in boats down the river to the nearest point.Water transport was,of course, much easier than land transport. The builders also had to find a rock base, which was not likely to crack (破裂) under the great weight of the pyramid. Finally,it had to be near the capital,or better still near the king's palace so that he could visit it easily to personally check the progress being made on the final resting place for his body.
56According to the passage,the “Step” pyramid ______.
A.is unlikely to fall into ruin in the near future
B.was built on the bands along the Nile
C.is one that was built later than the true pyramids
D.is the most famous of the true pyramids
57The most important reason why some pyramids remain in good condition is that ______.
A.people have taken good care of them
B.it doesn't rain often in Egypt
C.they were well designed
D.the government has protected them from damage
58Most of the damage to the pyramids has been caused by ______.
A.the regular floods
B.the dry climate of Egypt
C.the special shape of the pyramids
D.people in search of building materials
59The Egyptians built the pyramids along the banks of the Nile because ______.
A.they believed in their god
B.it was difficult to find a large rock base far from the Nile
C.the river helped a lot in the transport of building materials
D.it was not easy to choose a suitable place for the pyramids
B
The Tang Dynasty was probably the period when the Silk Road was at its busiest. One important center on the road was the city of Chang'an,where presentday Xi'an now stands.Chang'an was the capital city of this dynasty and by about 750 AD it had become a strong and successful capital of around two million people.Because of the chances for trade,a number of foreigners from countries bordering China lived in the city.
The markets at this time in Chang'an were perhaps the most exciting markets anywhere in the world. They sold goods from India,Africa,Japan,Korea,Turkey,Iran and other Arab countries and many items in the markets would have been completely new to some of the buyers.Interesting animals were sold together with exotic(奇异的)plants and strange medicines.Dried animals, dried foods and dried plants were laid out for sale next to rare seeds and spices(物种).But besides the hope to trade, which drew people together,China was still largely a mysterious country to the outside world and certainly the secret of the silk making was still unknown.
The route(路线)to the west followed different paths but the traders would have traveled from places to places, always looking for routes both to water and protection. However, the Ming Dynasty had its policy of isolation(闭关),together with the growth of Islam(伊斯兰),reduced the traffic along this ancient land route.Instead, sea routes became more popular and in the early 15th century there were many Chinese ships trading silk and other goods along the coasts of India,Arabia and Africa.
60This passage mainly tells us ______.
A.the silk trade in the past
B.the rise and fall of the Silk Road
C.the hard life the traders lived on the Silk Road
D.why sea routes became popular in the early 15th century
61It is probable that many dried goods were sold in the market because ______.
A.the market traders could store them for longer time and sell them more easily B.they could be stored and transported more easily by the traders on the Silk Road
C.they could be transported far more easily by traders from different countries D.they were lighter for the camels to carry wherever the traders wanted to go 62By saying “China was still largely a mysterious country to the outside world” the author refers to the fact that ______.
A.a large part of China was mysterious to the outside world
B.China was a large country that was totally unknown to the outside world C.to a great extent China was little known or understood by the outside world D.most of China was misunderstood by the outside world
63What does the underlined word “mysterious” mean?
A.ample B.wonderful
C.lively D.secret

When a Swedish ship that sank in 1628 was recovered from the port of Stockholm, historians and scientists were overjoyed with the chance to examine the remains of the past. The ship construction showed how ships were built and operated during the seventeenth century. In this way, artifacts(史前古器物),objects made by human beings, provided a picture of daily life almost 400 years ago.
Underwater archaeology—the study of ships, aircraft and human settlements that have sunk under large bodies of water—is really a product of the last 50 years. The rapid growth of this new area of study has occurred because of the invention of better diving equipment.Besides the Swedish ship wreck(残骸),underwater archaeologists have made more exciting discoveries such as the 5000yearold boats in the Mediterranean Sea.
Underwater archaeology can provide facts about the past.In ancient ports all over the world are ships sunken in the past 6000 years. There are also sunken settlements in seas and lakes telling of people's way of life and their systems of trade in ancient times.Underwater archaeologists want to study these objects to add to the world's knowledge of history, but they have to fight two enemies. One enemy is treasure hunters who dive for ancient artifacts that they can sell to collectors.Once sold, these objects are lost to experts. The second enemy is dredging
machines(挖掘机)often used to repair ports. These machines destroy wrecks and artifacts or bury them deeper under sand and mud.By teaching the public about the importance of underwater “museums” of the past, archaeologists are hoping to get support for laws to protect underwater treasures.
64What purpose does Paragraph 1 serve in the passage?
A.To provide background information of the topic.
B.To attract readers' attention to the topic.
C.To use an example to support the topic.
D.To offer basic knowledge of the topic.
65The aim of underwater archaeology is to ______.
A.exploit water bodies
B.search for underwater life
C.study underwater artifacts
D.examine underwater environment
66Underwater archaeologists are worried because______.
A.sea hunters have better diving equipment
B.their knowledge of world history is limited
C.dredging machines cause damage to the ports
D.sold artifacts can hardly be regained for research
67What is the main purpose of the passage?
A.To introduce a young branch of learning.
B.To discuss the scientists' problems.
C.To explain people's way of life in the past.
D.To describe the sunken ships.

Researchers in Bosnia unearthed geometrically (几何图形地) cut stone that they said could form part of the sloping surface (斜面) of what they believe is an ancient pyramid hidden in a huge hill.
Archaeologists (考古学家) and other experts began digging into the sides of the hill near the central Bosnian town of Visoko. They are trying to find out whether the 2120foot hill is a pyramid the first ever found in Europe.
Experts believed the structure would prove to be 722 feet high,or a third higher than Egypt's Great Pyramid of Giza, the tallest one in Egypt. The discovered huge
stone blocks appeared to be cut and polished (磨光).“It is clear that the top of the blocks, the surface,is manmade,”an expert said.
Earlier research on the hill, known as Visocica, found that it had 45degree slopes and a flat top.Under the dirt, workers discovered entrances to tunnels (隧道) and large stone blocks.
Last week,a team of workers were sent into a tunnel believed to be part of an underground network connecting the three pyramidshaped hills. They were followed by some experts who later said that it was certainly manmade.
The work at Visoko, about 20 miles northwest of Sarajevo, will continue for about six months. Two experts from Egypt are due to join the team in midMay.
68The passage is mainly about ______.
A.the discovery of a pyramid in Bosnia
B.the appearance of a pyramid in Bosnia
C.the possibility of a pyramid in Bosnia
D.the exact place of a pyramid in Bosnia
69Which of the following can most probably prove there is a pyramid under the hill?
A.The stone blocks there are huge.
B.There are no trees on the hill.
C.The stone blocks there are manmade.
D.The tunnels under the hill are very long.
70What does the underlined word “it” (in Paragraph 5) refer to?
A.The tunnel. B.The pyramid.
C.The hill. D.The valley.
71According to the experts, the pyramid in Bosnia ______.
A.will lie on the top of a hill
B.will be the highest pyramid all over the world
C.will be about 2120 feet high
D.is 20 miles southwest of Sarajevo

Scientists discovered that pictures on cave walls at Creswell Crags are the oldest known in Great Britain. But they didn't find out in the usual way.
Archaeologists study things left behind by people in the past. They often date
cave art with a process called radiocarbon dating (碳定年法).The technique can measure the age of carbon found in charcoal drawings (炭笔素描) or painted pictures.Carbon is an element (元素) found in many things, including charcoal and even people. But in this case, there was no paint or charcoal to test.People carved the pictures of animals and figures into the rock using stone tools.
The scientists had an “aha!” moment when they noticed small rocks stuck to the top of the drawings. The small rocks must have formed after the drawings were made. The small rock formations are similar to stalagmites (石笋).When a test proved that the stalagmites formed 12 800 years ago,the scientists knew the art underneath them had to be at least that old.And some of the animals are shown, like the European bison (野牛),disappear now.
The artists came to Creswell Crags. This place is one of the farthest points north reached by our ancient ancestors during the Ice Age.At that time, much of the North Sea was dry,so people could move about more easily. Some tools and bones found there are 13 000 to 15 000 years old. They show that the travelers hunted horses, reindeer, and arctic hare.
Their artwork is similar to art in France and Germany. It tells scientists that the Creswell Crags artists must have had a close connection to peoples several thousand kilometers away—another important clue to understand how humans spread out across the world.
72How can archaeologists date the age of cave art?
A.By studying the content of cave art.
B.By studying the tools of making cave art.
C.By means of radiocarbon dating.
D.By studying the remains in the cave
73The scientists felt ______ when they discovered the pictures on cave walls at Creswell Crags.
A.sad B.amazed
C.calm D.worried
74The similarity of the cave art at Creswell Crags and that in France and Germany ______.
A.suggested the ancient artwork in the European mainland was also made by the Creswell Crags artists
B.suggested a loose connection between them
C.supplied us an important clue to learn the spreading of humans all over the world
D.supplied us an important clue to learn how humans evolved
75What would be the best title for the passage?
A.Radiocarbon dating
B.Creswell Crags artists
C.Cave art turns out to be Britain's oldest
D.Cave art in France and Germany
