第二部分阅读理解(满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
21.(6分)The year 47 will be an eventful one for art. In May of that year in Berlin, the philosopher-artist Jonathon Keats’ “century cameras”— cameras with a
100-year-long exposure (曝光)time—will be brought back from hiding places around the city to have their results developed and exhibited. Six months after that, the Future Library in Oslo, Norway, will open its doors for the first time, presenting 100 books printed on the wood of trees planted in the distant past of 2017.
As Katie Paterson, the creator of the Fut ure Library, puts it: “Future Library is an artwork for future generations.” These projects, more than a century in the making, are part of a new wave of slow art intended to push viewers and Participants to think beyond their own lifetimes. They aim to ch allenge today’s short-term thinking and the brief attention spans of modern consumers, forcing people into considering works more deliberately. In their way, too, they are fighting against modern culture—not just regarding money, but also the way in which artistic worth is measured by attention.
In a similar fashion, every April on Slow Art Day, visitors are encouraged to stare at five works of art for 10 minutes at a time—a tough task for the average museum visitor, who typically spends less than30seconds on each piece of art.
Like the Future Library, the century cameras are very much a project for cities, since it’s in cities that time runs fastest and the pace of life is fastest. “Since I started living in a city, I’ve somehow been quite disconnected,” An ne Beate Hovind, the Future Library project manager, who described how working on the library drew her back to the Pace of life she knew when she was growing up on a farm in her youth, told The Atlantic magazine.

22.(8分)Robert Todd Duncan was born in 1903 in the southern city of Danville, Kentucky. His mother was his first music teacher. As a young man, he continued his music study in Indianapolis, Indiana.
In 1930, he completed musical education at Columbia University in New York City. Then he moved to Washington. For fifteen years, he taught music at Howard University in Washington. At that time, not many black musicians were known for writing or performing classical music. Teaching at Howard gave Duncan the chance to share his knowledge of classical European music with a mainly black student population. He taught special ways to present the music. These special ways became known as the Duncan Technique.
Besides teaching, Duncan sang in several operas with performers who were all black. But it seemed that he always would be known mainly as a concert artist. However, his life took a different turn in the middle of 1930s. At that time, the famous American music writer George Gershwin was looking for someone to play a leading part in his new work Porgy and Bess. A music critic (评论家) of The New York Times newspaper suggested Todd Duncan. Duncan had almost decided not to try for the part as he knew it would not be easy to get it. But he changed his mind. He sang a piece from an Italian
opera to Gershwin. He had sung only for a few minutes when Gershwin offered him the part. He became famous because of the part in Porgy and Bess.

23.(8分)Persuasion is to convince someone to agree with you, just like art which also calls for special techniques to accomplish. According to the ancient Greeks, there are three basic tools of persuasion: ethos, pathos and logos.
Ethos is a speaker’s way of convincing the audience that he is trustworthy, honest and reliable. One common way a speaker can develop ethos is by explaining how much experience or education he has in the field. After all, you’re more likely to listen to advice about how to take care of your teeth from a dentist than a fireman.
Pathos is a speaker’s way of connecting with an audience’s emotions. For example, a politician who is trying to convince an audience to vote for him might say that he alone can save the country from a terrible war. These words are intended to fill the audience
with fear, thus making them want to vote for him. Similarly, an animal charity might show an audience pictures of injured dogs and cats to make thee viewers feel pity, so they will be more likely to donate money.
Logos is the use of facts, statistics or other evidence to support your argument. An audience will believe you if you have convincing data to back up your claims. Presenting this evidence is much more persuasive than simply saying “believe me”.
Although ethos, pathos and logos all have their strengths, they are often most effective when used together. So, the next time you listen to a speech, watch a commercial or listen to a friend try to convince you to lend him some money, be on the lookout for these ancient Greek tools of persuasion.
1、What is the purpose of persuasion?
A.To advise somebody to support you.
B.To help someone have special skills.
C.To convince somebody to realize his aim.
D.To talk someone into being honest.
2、What is a speaker’s way of convincing the audience to trust h im?
A.Pathos. B.Ethos.
C.Logos. D.Education.
3、What do a politician and an animal charity have in common?
A.Both prevent themselves from being hurt.
B.Both save people from terrible wars.
C.Both make the audience support them.
D.Both persuade people to donate money.
4、Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.Convince the Audience. B.Three Basic Tools of Persuasion
C.Believe Me. D.Strength of Persuasion
24.(8分)I log onto a computer at the doctor’s office to say I have arri ved and then wait until a voice calls me into the examination room.
There, a robotic nurse directs me onto a device and then takes my blood pressure. Some time later, in steps the doctor, who is also a robot. He notes down my symptoms and gives me a prescription (处方). I pay for my visit using a credit card machine and return home without having met another human being.
When I call my dentist’s office and actually get a human being on the line, I am thrilled. And when I see the introduction of yet more self-service checkout stations at the grocery store, I feel like shouting, “When it comes to cashiers, make mine human, please!”
After all, human cashiers sometimes give you a store coupon (优惠券) for items you are buying. Even more than that, real-life cashiers often take an interest in particularly cute children, which can brighten a young mother’s day. A cashier may also show compassion (同情) for an elderly person struggling to get that last penny out of her purse.
What technological device would do any of this? I don’t want to go back to the Stone Age, but I’m also worried about a world run by machines. Sometimes when
you’re chatting with someone, you discover things you need to know. Maybe a receptionist needs prayers said for a sick child. Maybe a salesperson can offer a bit of encouragement to a customer who is feeling tired.
Machines can be efficient and cost-effective and they often get the job done just fine. But they lack an element so important to everyday life.
Call it the spirit, the soul or the heart. It is something no machine will ever have. It is being human that prompts us to smile at others, which may be what they need at that moment.
1、What’s the author’s purpose in writing the first two paragraphs?
A.To indicate high technology can make our future life very easy.
B.To describe a possible future scene where robots take control of our life.
C.To warn readers of the possible dangers of robotic nurses and doctors.
D.To predict how technology can affect the way we see a doctoring the future.
2、Why does the author prefer being served by humans rather than by robots? A.Robots are indifferent and emotionless.
B.Robots can’t provide efficient services.
C.Robots don’t offer to give store coupons.
D.Robots are unable to do a job as well as humans.
3、What’s the author’s attitude towards machines?
A.He wishes one day they would come to life.
B.He is absolutely against their existence in his life.
C.He doesn’t like they get involved in his life too much.
D.He is afraid they would take the place of human beings.
