Saturday, March 24th
We have arrived in the hot, wet city of Bangkok. This is our first trip to Thailand. All the different smells make us want to try the food. We are going to eat something special for dinner tonight. The hotel we are staying in is cheap, and very clean. We plan to stay here for a few days, visit some places in the city, and then travel to Chiang Mai in the North.
Tuesday, March 27th
Bangkok is wonderful and surprising. The places are interesting. We visited the famous market which was on water, and saw a lot of fruit and vegetables. We will take the train north, stay in Chiang Mai for two days, and then catch a bus to Chiang Rai.

When I was six, Dad brought home a dog one day, who was called "Brownie". My brothers and I all loved Brownie and did different things with her. One of us would walk her, another would feed her, then there were baths, playing catch and many other games. Brownie, in return, loved each and every one of us. One thing that most touched my heart was that she would go to whoever was sick and just be with them. We always felt better when she was around.
One day, as I was getting her food, she chewed up one of my Dad's shoes, which had to be thrown away in the end. I knew Dad would be mad and I had to let her know what she did was wrong. When
I looked at her and said, "Bad girl," she looked down at the ground and then went and hid. I saw
a tear in her eyes.
Brownie turned out to be more than just our family pet. She went everywhere with us. People would stop and ask if they could pet her. Of course she'd let anyone pet her. She was just the most lovable dog. There were many times when we'd be out walking and a small child would come over and pull on her hair. She never barked or tried to get away. Funny thing is that she would smile. This frightened people because they thought she was showing her teeth. Far from the truth, she loved everyone.
Now many years have passed since Brownie died of old age. I still miss the days when she was with us.

27. Which of the following best describes Brownie?
A. Caring.

There is an English saying that “Laughter is the best medicine.〞 Until recently, few people took the saying seriously. Now, however, doctors have begun to look into laughter and the effects it has on the human body. They have found that laughter can re ally improve people’s health.
Tests were carried out to study the effects of laughter on the body. People watched funny films while doctors checked their hearts, blood pressure, breathing and muscles. It was found that laughter has similar effects to physical exercise. It increases blood pressure, makes the heart beat quicker and makes people breathe deeper; it also works on several groups of muscles in the face, the stomach, and even the feet. If laughter exercises the body, it must be beneficial 〔有益的〕.
Other tests have shown that laughter appears to be able to reduce the effects of pain on the body. In one experiment doctors produced pain in groups of students who listened to different
radio programs. The group that tolerated〔忍耐〕the pain for the longest time was the group which listened to a funny program. The reason why laughter can reduce pain seems to be that it helps to produce a kind of chemical in the brain which diminishes both stress and pain.
As a result of these discoveries, some doctors in the United States now hold laughter clinics(诊所), in which they help to improve their patients’ condition by encouraging them to laugh. They have found that even if their patients do not really feel like laughing, making them smile is enough to produce beneficial effects similar to those caused by laughter.
28. According to the passage, which of the following statements is NOT true?
A. Laughter helps improve health.
B. Laughter shares similar functions with physical exercises.
C. Laughter can take the place of medicine.
D. Laughter acts as a painkiller to some extent.
29.The underlined word “diminishes〞in Paragraph 3 means “______〞.
A. stops
B. kills
C. lessens
D. rises
30. According to the author, we should______.
A. watch more funny films
B. always keep quiet
C. often visit laughter clinics
D. often laugh happily
31. What would be the best title for this passage?
A. Beneficial Laughter and Physical Exercise
B. Popular Laughter Clinics
C. Painkiller—Laughter
D. The Best Medicine—Laughter
