The British company Malloy Aeronautics has developed a model of its flying bicycle. The company says its Hoverbike will be a truly personal flying vehicle. The company’s marketing sales director Grant Stapleton says the Hoverbike is able to get in and out of small spaces very quickly and can be moved across continents very quickly because it can be folded and packed.Safety was the company’s main concern when developing the Hoverbike. The designers solved this problem by using overlapping rotors(重叠旋翼) to power the vehicle. With adducted rotors(内转旋翼) the rider immediately not only protects people and belongings if he were to hit them, but if the rider ever were to crash into somebody or something, it’s going to bring the flying vehicle out of the air. The company is testing two models of the Hoverbike. In New Zealand, the Martin Aircraft Company is also testing a full-size model of its personal flying device, called Jetpack. It can fly for more than 30 minutes, up to 1,000 meters high and reach a speed of 74 kilometers per hour.Peter Coker, one officer from the company said Jetpack “is built around safety from the start.” In his words, “Reliability(可靠性) is the most important part of it. We have safety built into the actual structure itself, very similar to a Formula One racing car.”Jetpack uses a petrol-powered engine. It also has a parachute(降落伞) that can be used if there should be an emergency(突发事件). It opens at very low altitude(纬度) and actually saves both the flying vehicle and the pilot in an emergency.Mr. Coker says Jetpack will be ready for sale to the public by the end of 2019. He adds it’ll have a price of about $200,000.12.According to the text, the Hoverbike .A.is ready for saleB.is difficult to controlC.is easy to carryD.is popular in England13.What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?A.How the Hoverbike flies.B.How models of the Hoverbike were tested.C.How the Hoverbike was powered.D.How the designers solved the Hoverbike’s problem of safety.14.The underlined word “It” in the sixth paragraph refers to .A.the petrol-powered engineB.the parachuteC.the vehicleD.the overlapping rotor15.Peter Coker attaches great importance to Jetpack’s .A.safetyB.speedC.marketD.power第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

并在答题卡上将该选项涂黑.ACharlie is a teacher and his wife, Maria is an artist. The night before last, just before the longest day of the year, Charlie was sitting in a deckchair enjoying the warm summer air when Maria touched his shoulder and he could tell immediately she was a little worried about something. He asked her what the matter was and she replied that there was a strange thing on the jacket that was hanging in the bedroom. They had both lived in the West Indies (西印度群岛) and had seen a lot of strange creatures in their house before. But now they were living in England and so Charlie just laughed and said he would have a look at the “thing”.He walked to the bedroom. He saw a jacket hanging in the bedroom and went up to it to have a closer look at the “thing”. The moment he touched it, the thing sprang into life. Now Charlie experiences fear like the rest of us but when this creature opened its wings, he jumped out of his skin and ran screaming from the room like a small child doing about 100 miles an hour. For a moment the next-door neighbours thought that Charlie was murdering his wife because of the noise they could hear. In fact, it was a bat that frightened Charlie.Eventually Charlie managed to trap the bat in a box and took it to the garden to let the bat fly. Maria, who had been playing the guitar while Charlie was upstairs, asked Charlie if he had found out what the thing was. “Oh,nothing to worry about”, he said casually hoping that the terror could not be seen in his eyes, “it was justa bat.”1. Why was Maria a little worried one night?A. Because she couldn't find her guitar.B. Because she saw somethingstrange.C. Because it was too hot for her.D. Because she had quarreled with her husband.2. Why does this happen? Should the parents take any measures? On the one hand, people who spend a lot of time in front of the TV, especially teenagers, may snack more, and that may affect their long-term diet quality. On the other hand,TV ads for fast food, sweets and snacks tempt teenagers to eat more of those foods. And TV time might also replace exercise time for some kids.Lead researcher Dr. Daheia J. Barr-Anderson,of the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, told Reuters Health a clear correlation between TV time during high school and diet quality in young adulthood. While the heaviest TV viewers were eating the most junk food , those who'd watched less than two hours per day had the highestintake(吸收)of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and high-calcium food. In her opinion, parents should limit and monitor TV viewing. As far as I am concerned, children should watch no more than two hours of television per day. And parents should set a good example by eating right, being physically active and curbing their own TV time.5. AHenry and I were shopping in a neighborhood market. Henry was busy weighing each new bag of vegetables I selected. I gave him a bag of potatoes and he walked over to the scale and waited in line. Suddenly, a man rushed over from behind, and stepped before him, hitting him out of the way. Henry looked shocked and scared. Seeing this I left my shopping cart and walked over to Henry, saying loudly, “Are you OK, honey?I saw what that man did to you. That was very, very wrong.”When the man finished weighing his bag, his sudden turning around made all his onions fall to the ground. The three of us stood there, frozen for a moment. And then I bent down on my hands and knees and started collecting onions. After I handed the onions to the man, he accepted them and put them into his bag. After Henry and I picked up all the onions, the man walked away without saying anything. We didn’t discuss the event until we got back in the car.On the way back home, Henry said through tears, “Mommy, I’ve a frustrating day. That man cut right in front of me. And we had to help him pick up his onions! Why did we do that? That didn’t make any sense!”I took a deep breath and said, “Henry, that man seemed to have a very bad mood today. We should forgive him. I was also angry with the man for treating you rudely.I really wanted to kick him. But doing that doesn’t make any sense. If we hadn’t helped him, we might have felt good for a moment, but then I bet we would have felt really sorry for a long time. You and I have a lot of love to share. Maybe that man doesn’t have much. People who behave badly still need love.”A cheerful smile appeared on Henry’s face. It was a smile of promise kept. It was the best smile I had ever seen. It was a good moment. It may have been my best mommy moment ever.1. What did the man do?A. He cut in the line.B. He hit Henry on the head.C. He hurried away without paying.D. He ran into Henry suddenly.2. Narrow-minded.B. Broad-minded.C. Strong-willed.D. Bad-tempered.BIf Confucius(孔子) were alive today and could celebrate his September 28 birthday with a big cake, there would be a lot of candles. He’d need a fan or a strong wind to help him put them out. While many people in China remember Confucius on his special day, few people in the United States will give him a passing thought. It’s nothing personal. Most Americans don’t even remember the birthdays of their own national heroes. But that doesn’t mean that Americans don’t care about Confucius. In many ways he has bee a bridge that foreigners must cross if they want to reach a deeper understanding of China. In the past two decades, the Chinese studies programs have gained huge popularity in Western universities. More recently, the Chinese government has set up Confucius Institutes in more than 80 countries. These schools teach both Chinese language and culture. The main courses of Chinese culture usually include Chinese art, history and philosophy(哲学). Some social scientists suggest that Westerners should take advantage of the ancient Chinese wisdom to make up the drawbacks of Western philosophy. Students in the United States, at the same time, are racing to learn Chinese. So they will be ready for life in a world where China is an equal power with the United States. Businessmen who hope to make money in China are reading books about Confucius to understand their Chinese customers. So the old thinker’s ideas are still alive and well.Today China attracts the West more than ever, and it will need more to introduce Confucius and Chinese culture to the West.As for the old thinker, he will not be forgotten by people in the West, even if his birthday is.4. The opening paragraph is mainly intended to _______.A. attract the readers’ interest in the subjectB. provide some key facts about ConfuciusC. show great respect for the ancient thinkerD. prove the popularity of modern birthday celebrations5. You can use it to fly a kite or to sail a boat. Wind is one of our cleanest and richest power sources, as well as one of the oldest. Evidence shows that windmills began to be used in the ancient Iran back in the seventh century BC. They were first introduced to Europe during the 1100s, when armies returned from the Middle East with knowledge of using wind power. For many centuries, people used windmills to grind(磨碎)wheat into flour or pump water from deep underground. When electricity was discovered in the late 1800s, people living in remote areas began to use them to produce electricity. This allowed them to have electric lights and radios. However, by the 1940s when electricity was available to people in almost all areas of the United States, windmills were rarely used.During the 1970s, people started being concerned about the pollution that is created when coal and gas are burned to produce electricity. People realized that the supply of coal and gas would not last forever. Then, wind was rediscovered, though it means higher costs. Today, there is a global movement to supply more and more of our electricity through the use of wind.12. From the text we know that windmills _______.A. were invented by European armiesB. have a history of more than 2,800 yearsC. have rarely been used since electricity was discoveredD. used to supply power to radio in remote area13. But to make sure not to get lost or waste time going round in circles, the following tips may be helpful.1. Do the map reading if you're being driven somewhere. It'll be easier if you keep the map following the direction you are traveling in. Keep looking ahead so that you can give the driver lots of warning before having to make a turn, or you'll have to move to the back seat.2. Get a group of friends together and go exploring. You’ll need a good map,a compass,a raincoat,a cell phone to call for help in case you get lost, and a bit of spare cash for emergencies. Tell someone where you’re going before you set out and let them know what time you expect to be back. The purpose of the activity is in not getting lost, not in seeing how fast you can go, so always stick together, waiting for slower friends to catch up.3. See if your school or a club organizes orienteering(越野识途比赛)activities, in which you need a map and a compass to find your way. This can be done as a sport, with teams trying to find the way from A to B (and B to C, etc.) in the fastest time, or simply as a spare-time activity. It enables you to be familiar with the use of maps and compass and gain some special skills. In some way, it’s not only good fun, but also a great way to keep fit.5. When you sit beside the driver, you’d better_____A. look ahead to see where there is a gas stationB. move to the back seat if feeling uncomfortableC. keep looking at the map to find another place to go toD. direct the driver when necessary6. Usually I was working on four courses at a time, just as if I were in a brick-and-mortar high school. But unlike students in a brick-and-mortar school, I did not work for a set amount of time each day. Sometimes I would spend the whole day on English, and on another I would study among all four, depending on how focused I was or what I felt motivated to do. I loved skating during my high school years, both as a competitor and a coach. Below is an example of what a typical day was like for me.6:00 am—8:00 am: Skating9:00 am—10:30 am: Read content for English10:30 am—10:45 am: Break (usually a walk outside, catching up with friends, etc.)10:45 am—12:00 pm: Begin brainstorming and do primary research for English assignments12:00 pm—12:30 pm: Lunch12: 30 pm—3 :30 pm: Read content for maths, work through exercises, start a maths assignment 4:00 pm—7 :00 pm: Skating and coachingA common question I would get was, “Do you spend a lot of time in front of the computer to do t he courses?” The answer is “yes”. It is an online school, after all. That does not mean that you are tied to a desk, however. Like students in brick-and-mortar schools, I took notes by hand so that I wasn’t always typing or looking at a screen. I often wen t to the library to find books for my research and English courses.1.How many courses did Amanda have?A.Two. B.Three. C.Four. D.Five. 2.When did Amanda study maths according to the example of a typical day? A.Between 10:45 am and 12:00 pm. B.Between 12:30 pm and 3 :30 pm. C.Between 12:00 pm and 2:30 pm. D.She took her notes by typing. It feels like every time my mother and I start to have a conversation, it turns into an argument. We talk about something as simple as dinner plans and suddenly my mother will push the conversation into the Third World War. She’ll talk about my lack of bright future because I don’t plan to be a doctor. And much to her disappointment, I don’t want to do any job related to science, either. In fact, when I was pushed to say that I planned to major in English, she nearly had a heart attack.“Why can’t you be like my co-worker’s son?” she shouts all the time. Her co-worker’s son received a four-year scholarship and is now earning 70,000 dollars a year as an engineer. I don’t know what to say except that I simply can’t be like Mr. Perfect as I’ve called the unnamedco-worker’s son. I can’t be like him. I am the type of the person who loves to help out in the community, write until the sun goes down, and most of all, wants to achieve something because of loving it, not because of fame or salary.I understand why my mother is worried about my future major. I’ve seen my mother struggle (艰难) to raise me on her small salary and work long hours. She leaves the house around 6:30 am and usually comes back home around 5:00 pm or even 6:00 pm.However, I w ant her to know that by becoming a doctor, it doesn’t mean I’ll be successful. I’d rather follow my dreams and create my own future.4.What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 1 mean?A.The author’s mother argued about something angrily with him.B.T he author’s mother expressed different opinions on the war.C.The author’s mother liked talking with him but got angry easily.D.The author’s mother quite disagreed about what to eat for dinner.5.Why does the author’s mother mention her co-worker’s son?A.To tell the author to learn as hard as he can. Quite simply, the 23-letter Roman alphabet has never been enough — even Old English (spoken 450-1150) had about 35 sounds, and the number is now even bigger. But the English spelling was and still is based on the Roman alphabet.More spelling problems came in when the French introduced new spelling rules — their own of course? and not always helpful. Using “c” instead of “s” for words like city was confusing because “c” also sounds “k” in words like cat.And then printing arrived in the 15th century — and with it more mess (混乱). William Caxton (who set up the printing machines in the first place) liked Dutch spellings and so he introduced the “gh” in ghost and ghastly. Some pr inters were Europeans and they introduced favourite spellings too from their own languages. Such spelling rules were not helpful either! One of the biggest problems for English spelling has always been changes in pronunciation. Printing helped to stablise (使……稳定……) the spelling of words, but then some sounds changed their shape? and others even disappeared altogether. Think of those silent letters in words such as walk, through, write, right, know — these were once pronounced. Many silent letters appeared just because some famous busybodies wanted to make the language look more beautiful. This caused serious mess. Let’s take rhyme as an example. It came from the French word rime. But it was changed to rhyme to give it a nicer look. It was an interesting idea, but hardly helpful for someone trying to spell the word! The 16th and 17th centuries saw many extra letters introduced in this way.All these events lead to the messy spelling system we have today. But you know, there are in fact over 80% of words spelled according to regular rules.8.How many letters are there in the Roman alphabet?A.23. B.26. C.35. D.48. 9.Which word is most probably spelt according to the French rules?A.Sit. B.Cycle. C.Calm. D.Knee. 10.What is paragraph 5 mainly about?A.Sound changes. B.Silent letters.C.Borrowed spelling rules. D.Printing mistakes.11.What is the author’s purpose of writing the text?A.To call for a much simpler spelling.B.To tell how to recognize foreign words.C.To explain why English spelling is so difficult.D.To show how to pronounce difficult words. The endangered pandas in Qinling Mountains might face a new threat(威胁): the loss of their food, bamboo, which makes up 99% of their meals.Adult pandas spend most part of the day eating bamboo and have to take in at least 40 pounds a day to stay healthy. However, a new study published in Nature and Climate Change warned that they may soon find their food gone because most of the bamboo in Qinling Mountains might disappear by the end of the century as a result of risingtemperature worldwide.A team made up of researchers from Michigan State University and the ChineseAcademy of Sciences has studied the effects of climate change on the bamboo in Qinling Mountains. They have found that bamboo is very sensitive to climate changes. “80% to 100% of the bamboo would be gone if the average temperature increases 3.5 degrees worldwide by the end of the century.” said Liu Jianguo, one of the report’s authors. He added, “This is how much the temperature would r ise by 2100 even if all countries will keep their promises in the Paris Agreement. But you know what ishappening around the world.”In recent years, China has been trying its best to protect the endangered pandas by setting up more and bigger natural reserves.“But it is far from being enough and the endangered pandas need cooperation from the rest of the world, because their future is not just in the hands of the Chinese,” saidShirley Martin from World Wildlife Fund but not a member of the team. The Qinling Mountains, in the southwest of China, are home to about 260 pandas. That is about 13% of the China’s wild panda population. In addition, about 375 are living in research centers and zoos in China.12.What can we learn from the first paragraph?A.Lots of the bamboo in Qinling Mountains will probably disappear.B.Qinling Mountains cannot provide enough bamboo for the pandas.C.Pandas in Qinling Mountains are just threatened by the loss of food.D.Pandas have already eaten 99% of the bamboo in Qinling Mountains.13.What does Liu Jianguo mean?A.China needs more help from World Wildlife Fund.B.Bamboo is sensitive to the changes of temperature.C.China is making great efforts to protect the pandas.D.It is difficult to control the temperature rise within 3.5℃.14.How many wild pandas are there in China?A.About 260. As you know ,there are quite a few cities with famous places of interest in China. Since you have just a one-week trip in my country ,I would like to recommend the city of Beijing as your destination for the following reasons. Firstly ,Beijing is the capital of China, where you can see lots of people from various parts of China and sense their kindness and multicultural China ,esp. the rapid development of China.
Secondly, many attractions of different times will surely leave a deep impression on you all, such as the Palace Museum ,the Great Wall ,the Summer Palace and so on.
