文章主要讲述二维码的发展历史。

13. The invention of the 1D barcodes revolutionized supermarkets and general market management. But shortly after their introduction, their disadvantages were clear. There was an instant demand to be able to encode (编码) more than 20 alphanumeric characters (字符) that the traditional barcodes could hold.
Denso Wave, a Japanese company, at the time, was in the business of manufacturing 1D barcode scanners. Listening to feedback from users of the 1D barcode scanners they were selling, they put together a development team to come up with a solution.
One of the key targets was to ensure that no matter what barcode they designed, it can be scanned very fast. It took the team nearly 18 months, and eventually they came up with a barcode that could hold up to 7,000 alphanumerical characters and could be scanned up to 10 times faster than any other code at the time. In 1994, the QR Code was born.
The QR Code quickly spread outside of Japan and were approved for many standards globally. But that wasn’t the end of the development of the QR Code. After all, nothing is perfect at its beginning and people soon began to present more requirements to Denso Wave. The variations (变体) of the QR Code were soon developed.
One of the biggest reasons why the QR Code has been able to be used widely is that Denso Wave made the decision to make the QR Code publicly available. This means anyone can use it without paying any fees. Denso Wave do hold a patent for the QR Code, but have declared that they have no intention to exercise it.
It wasn’t until 2002 that the first smartphones came to market with the QR Code scanner, and this really accelerated the technology. Once widespread on phones, almost anyone can read these codes and doesn’t require expensive hardware to do so. It is believed that Nokia is the first to
bring this technology to a mobile device.
1. What is the disadvantage of the 1D barcodes?
A .The information they store is too little.
B .They sometimes encoded wrong characters.
C .They disturbed general market management.

2. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A.A character.B.A scanner.C.A barcode.D.Denso Wave.
3. What is a reason why the QR Code spreads so quickly?
A.It has been protected by a patent.
B.The public are permitted to use it for free.
C.It has been perfect since its first appearance.
D.People have fewer demands for its variations.
4. What is the text mainly about?
A.An introduction of the QR Code.

文章介绍了位于南卡罗来纳州海岸的沙利文岛海滨一座玲珑的小屋以其独特的设计获得大奖。

这座房子既抗风防浪,又美观坚固,实乃经典之作。

14. Some houses are designed to be smart. Others have smart designs. An example of the second type of house won an A ward of Excellence from the American Institute of Architects.
Located on the shore of Sullivan’s Island off the coast of South Carolina, the award-winning cube-shaped beach house was built to replace one smashed to pieces by Hurricane (飓风) Hugo 10 years ago. Before Hugo, many new houses built along South Carolina’s shoreline were poorly constructed, and enforcement of building rules wasn’t strict, according to architect Ray Huff, who created the cleverly-designed beach house. Soon after Hugo, all new shoreline houses are required to meet stricter, better-enforced rules. The new beach house on Sullivan’s Island should be able to withstand a Level 3 hurricane with peak winds of 179 to 209 kilometers per hour.
At first sight, the house on Sullivan’s Island looks anything but hurricane-proof. Its redwood shell makes it resemble “a large party lantern (灯笼)” at night, according to one observer. But looks can be misleading. The house’s wooden frame is reinforced with long steel rods to give it extra strength.
To further protect the house from hurricane damage. Huff raised it 2.7 meters off the ground on timber pilings-long, slim wood pieces anchored deep in the sand. Pilings might appear insecure, but they are strong enough to support the weight of the house. They also raise the house above storm waves. The pilings allow the waves to run under the house instead of running into it. “These waves come ashore at terrible speeds and cause most of the damage done to beach-front buildings,” said Huff.
Huff designed the timber pilings to be partially hidden by the house’s ground-to-roof shell. “The shell masks the pilings so that the house doesn’t look like it’s standing with its pant legs (裤腿) pulled up,” said Huff. In the event of a storm, the shell should break apart and let the waves rush under the house, the architect explained.
1. After the Hurricane Hugo, new houses built along South Carolina’s shore line are required ________.
A.to be easily reinforced B.to meet stricter building standards
C.to look smarter in design D.to be designed in the shape of cubes
2. Why is the award-winning beach house strong and hurricane-proof?
A.It is in the shape of a shell.B.It is made of redwood.
C.It is strengthened by steel rods.D.It is built with timber and concrete.
3. What’s the purpose of Huff raising the house 2.7 meters off the ground on timber pilings?
A.To anchor stronger pilings deep in the sand.
B.To prevent water from rushing into the house.
C.To withstand peak winds of about 200 km/hr.
D.To make the house look more hurricane-proof.
4. According the last paragraph, the main function of the shell is ________.
A.to give the house a better appearance
B.to strengthen the pilings of the house
C.to protect the wooden frame of the house
D.to slow down the speed of the big waves

15. EDGEWOOD - Every morning at Dixie Heights High School, customers pour into a special experiment: the district’s first coffee shop run
mostly by students with special learning needs.
Well before classes start, students and teachers order Lattes, Cappuccinos and Hot Chocolates. Then, during the first period, teachers call in orders on their room phones, and students make deliveries.
By closing time at 9.20 a.m., the shop usually sells 90 drinks.
“Whoever made the chi tea, Ms. Schatzman says it was good,” Christy McKinley, a second year student, announced recently, after hanging up with the teacher.
The shop is called the Dixie PIT, which stands for Power in Transition. Although some of the students are not disabled, many are, and the PIT helps them prepare for life after high school.
They learn not only how to run a coffee shop but also how to deal with their affairs. They keep a timecard and receive paychecks, which they keep in check registers.
Special-education teachers Kim Chevalier and Sue Casey introduced the Dixie PIT from a similar program at Kennesaw Mountain High School in Georgia.
Not that it was easy. Chevalier’s first problem to overcome was product-related. Should schools be selling coffee? What about sugar content?
Kenton County Food Service Director Ginger Gray helped. She made sure all the drinks, which use non-fat milk, fell within nutrition (营养) guidelines.
The whole school has joined in to help.
Teachers agreed to give up their lounge (休息室) in the mornings. Art students painted the name of the shop on the wall. Business students designed the paychecks. The basketball team helped pay for cups.
1. What is the text mainly about?
A.A best-selling coffee.
B.A special educational program.

《华尔街日报》报道中,Instagram对许多青少年用户的心理健康产生有害影响。

但在作者看来,这是其诱发用户精神紧张,放大了自身的自尊问题所致,本质上是人的问题。

16. Thanks to in-depth reporting by The W all Street Journal, we now know that Facebook has long been aware its product Instagram has harmful effects on the mental health of many adolescent users. Young girls, in particular, struggle with their body image thanks to a constant stream of photos and videos showing beautiful bodies that users don’t think they can attain.
While the information the journal covered is essential and instructive, it does not tell the whole story. Deep down, this is not an Instagram problem; it’s a people problem. Understanding that distinction can make the difference between a failed attempt to contain a teen’s interest in an addictive app and successfully addressing the underlying problem leading to mental distress caused by Instagram.
Critics were quick to shame Facebook for sitting on the data and not releasing it to researchers or academics who asked for it. Others criticize the social media giant for not using the research to create a safer experience for its teen users. The anger, while understandable, is misplaced.
While I’m reluctant to defend Facebook, I’m not sure it’s reasonable to blame the company for refusing to give data that would hurt its business. Have you ever binge-watched a Netflix series? I assure you it wasn’t a healthy endeavor. Y ou were inactive, likely did nothing productive, mindlessly snacked and didn’t go outside for fresh air. It is an objectively harmful use of time to stare at a TV or laptop for a full weekend. Should we respond by shaming Netflix for not alerting us to how damaging an addictive product can be?
While it’s reasonable to say Instagram makes esteem issues worse, it is almost impossible to believe it causes them in the first place. Y ou create
your own experiences on social media. For the most part, you choose which accounts to follow and engage. If you’re already vulnerable to insecurities and self-sabotage (自损) — as many teens are — you will find accounts to obsess over. And this isn’t a new phenomenon.
Before social media, there were similar issues fueling self-esteem issues. Whether the target be magazines, movies or television shows depicting difficult-to-attain bodies, there has been a relatively steady chorus of experts noting the damage new media could cause young viewers.
Self-esteem issues have an underlying cause — one that’s independent of social media use. Instagram merely enhances those feelings because it provides infinitely more access to triggers than older forms of media. It’s more worthwhile to address those underlying factors rather than to attack Facebook.
1. What does the author think of the criticisms against Instagram?
A.They address the mental pain caused by Instagram.
B.They are not directed at the fundamental problem.
C.They are only based on the data released by Facebook.
D.They are effective in changing teens’ interest in addictive apps.
2. Why is Netflix mentioned?
A.To defend why Facebook is to blame.
B.To show Netflix does more harm to teens.
C.To suggest the critics’ remarks are not to the point.
D.To compare the criticisms against it and Facebook.
3. Why is the Instagram problem essentially a “people problem”?
A.People have a tendency to feel insecure online.
B.People are keen on making up their self-profile.
C.It is human nature to get addicted to social media.
D.Users decide on their experiences on social media.
4. What is the passage mainly about?
A.The fierce criticism faced by Facebook.
B.The harmful impact of Instagram on teenagers.
C.The alarming online habits of teenagers worldwide.
D.The root of mental sufferings caused by Instagram.
