Unit 2 Lesson 12 Helen Keller - Teaching Plan
Overview
This lesson is designed for the sixth graders who are in their second unit and twelfth lesson. In this lesson, the students will learn about the life and achievements of Helen Keller, who overcame her physical challenges and became an advocate for people with disabilities. The lesson will be conducted in English and will focus on reading comprehension and vocabulary building.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to: - Identify key facts about Helen Keller’s life and legacy. - Develop new vocabulary related to disabilities and perseverance. - Comprehend and interpret a reading passage with accuracy and fluency.
Materials Needed
•Paper and pen/pencil for note-taking
•Whiteboard and markers
•Copies of the “Helen Keller” reading passage for each student
•Vocabulary cards with the following words: blindness, deafness, perseverance, disability, communication, advocate, overcome Teaching Process
Step 1: Warm-Up (10 minutes) - Start the class by asking the students if they have ever heard of Helen Keller. If they have, ask them to describe what they know about her. If they have not, explain briefly who she was and what she is known for. - Next, introduce the vocabulary words listed above using a mix of visuals, definitions, and examples. - Then, distribute the vocabulary cards to the students and ask them to match each word with its definition. Review the answers as a group.
Step 2: Reading (20 minutes) - Give each student a copy of the “Helen Keller” reading passage and ask them to read it silently. - Then, ask the students to read the passage again, but this time as a group, taking turns reading aloud. - Afterward, use the whiteboard to discuss the main ideas and key details of the passage, asking the
students to share what they comprehended. Encourage them to ask questions and share their thoughts.
Step 3: Group Activity (20 minutes) - Divide the class into small groups of three or four students. - Give each group a list of questions that relate to the reading passage and ask them to discuss and answer the questions together. The questions may include things like: - What was Helen Keller’s disability and how did it affect her life? - How did Helen Keller communicate with others? - What were some of Helen
Keller’s accomplishments? - In what ways did Helen Keller advocate for people with disabilities? - After the groups have had time to discuss and answer the questions, ask each group to share their answers with the rest of the class.
Step 4: Reflection (10 minutes) - End the class by asking the students to reflect on what they learned in the lesson. Ask questions like: - What was something that you learned about Helen Keller that you did not know before? - Why do you think it is important to understand disabilities and the challenges that come with them? - Allow the students to share their reflections with the class.
