People send birthday greetings by using cards in both eastern and western countries. It is not known when and where the tradition of sending birthday cards began. It is believed that it began in England in the early nineteenth century. In those days people sent birthday cards when they couldn't wish somebody a happy birthday face to face.
In 1840 the first stamp was used in Britain and sending birthday cards became easier, cheaper and more popular. The improvement of color printing processes(工艺流程) in the 1930s also helped a lot with the sales of birthday cards.
Today cards are often given with a present, even when people can express their wishes face to face. Now e-cards have also become popular. Many people are starting to use e-cards to take the place of traditional cards because they are free, environmentally-friendly and easy to arrive. So will e-cards take the place of paper cards in ten or twenty years? Probably not. For example, for kids and old people, they don't use e-cards very often.

Though times have changed, falling asleep in class is still a common thing among teenagers.
Why do students sometimes fall asleep in class? An main reason is lack of(缺少) sleep. However, there are also causes for getting too little sleep. Homework is a daily task for most students, one that can take three to four hours per night. A teenager who wants to be able to take part in any activity besides homework must stay up late to fit everything in. Club activities, sports, computer-game playing, and TV viewing, for example, all cause teens to have less time for both homework and sleep. Sometimes teens lack sleep because of after-school jobs that are taken on to make money for college, family expenses, or simply for clothes.
Physical problems are another factor(因素) that can cause students to fall asleep in class. For example, insomnia(失眠), which may keep a student up at night, and cause exhaustion(疲惫不堪) during class hours. It is a serious problem that may need medical attention.
Medical evidence(证据) also supports the idea that each person has a body clock that helps to decide his or her sleep style. Unluckily, these body clocks do not always work according to school timetables.
The effects(影响) of falling asleep in class can be quite serious. First of all, sleeping in class is not a good way to make yourself welcomed by your teachers. In addition, it is possible that other students may make jokes about those who sleep in class. However, the most harmful effect of sleeping in class is missing out on important points. In the long run, sleepers may end up failing classes.
Since teens are probably not going to deal with the problem, falling asleep in class will probably still an all-too-common thing. It will continue until more teens find a way to balance(平。
