Probably the first to use it were the Chinese, way back in the eleventh century B. C. ! We know that the umbrella was used in ancient Egypt and Babylon as a sunshade. The United States and China are competing to win the most medals at the 2008 Beijing 0-lympic Games. Regardless of which country wins, there is no denying that these two nations have athletes that excel on the Olympic stage. But the manners in which these athletes are trained are totally different. In America diere is no national governing body that examines young athletes and chooses what sports they should play. This decision is made by the family. If a child shows interest in swimming or gymnastics, the parents might encourage him or her. Paying for lessons and coaching can be expensive, the cost reaching, in some instances, as much as $ 100, 000 a year. Only when you make the national team do you receive any financial assistance. But parents see it as a good investment. They believe the hard work and focus required in practising can be used in other areas of life. For example, gymnast Shawn Johnson, 16, has already published three short stories. More usually, athletes use their excellence in sports to get college scholarships. Sport scholarships are awarded to athletes of outstanding performance in order to enable them to finance their studies at colleges. The athlete participates fully in practice sessions with the college team and represents the university in various competitions. US adiletes get to the Games in different ways. Renee Hykel, a member of US Rowing, began rowing while attending St. Josephs University. Since graduating she has earned a master’s degree and is now attending law school. Todd Wells of US Cycling worked in the computer industry before his love of biking took over. And Jason Parker, US shooting, was in the US Army before joining the team. Their overall goal seems to be success in a sport but also in life. Many of them know dieir careers will be short lived and it is important to be prepared for the rest of their lives. For example, US swimmer Michael Phelps has said he would like to have a career in either sports marketing or in some technical field. While the chance to represent
their country in the Olympics is priceless, it becomes even more valuable when they can continue contributing long after the games have ended.
25.Why do parents see the payment for lessons as a good investment?

Did Kungfu Panda simply use a Chinese symbol, or more or less abuse it?
Other than artist Zhao Bandi, who has turned the animal into a prop(道具) , most in China seem to hold the view that the Dreamworks cartoon is respectful of Chinese culture. I happen to agree with the majority. Kungfu Panda is not a typical case of East meets West. It is a successful fusion of the obvious. The filmmakers have no doubt studied many classic kungfu movies. The fight with chopsticks is a clever use of popular scenes in Hong Kong movies. It is well designed, but not very original. In terms of genre, Kungfu Panda is at once a tribute (敬意) and a spoof (模仿) . It milks jokes from the familiar, but displays kungfu “awesomeness” , to borrow a word from the movie, to those who have only heard of this important part of Chinese popular culture. It gives Chinese symbols an endearing quality, something Chinese movies do not achieve because they reach only limited audiences in the West. However, there is a lot that Chinese filmmakers can learn from this East-West combination. Even if you work within a well-established framework, you can still let your imagination run free. A Chinese film story is not likely to designate a duck as a panda’s father. People would laugh it off as crazy. But, in the logic of cartoons, there is nothing wrong with this. Besides, the interaction between duck father and panda son is much funnier than with an older and a younger panda. The theme is more Hollywood than Confucius. While both Chinese and American stories feature good-vs-evil battles, the Chinese emphasize loyalty and conformity while the West values individuality and self-achievement. Of course, clumsy panda learning kungfu can be interpreted in two ways: You could see Panda Po’s victory as a confirmation of the saying, “ Believe in yourself” , or you can see it as a triumph of hard-work ethic. The charm of Kungfu Panda does not lie in its plot or its theme, but in its details. There are plenty of surprises that make it a joyful ride. When you look at Chinese movies, many have decent plots but just no details.
29.What’s the view held by most Chinese about Kungfu Panda?
A.It simply used a Chinese symbol.
B.It shows no respect for the Chinese culture.
C.An older and a younger panda would be more appropriate than duck father and panda son.
