Anyway, T omorrow is Another Day
-----Book Review of <Gone with the Wind> The most impressive book I read this semester is Margaret Mitchell's <Gone with the Wind>. It is really a worth-reading book, especially for girls, I suppose. After reading the book, I learn quite a lot from the heroine, Scarlett·O'Hara. I understand what is called true love, how to try one’s best to survive in a difficult situation, and the most important to me, is that how to grow up to be a mature person from an innocent and self-willed girl.
<Gone with the Wind> mainly tells a life story of the heroine, Scarlett·O'Hara during the American Civil War. In my opinion, it is also a story about a girl's mature on characteristics and love.
Scarlett·O'Hara is a charming girl who loses her heart to Ashley Wilkes, but unfortunately, Ashley is going to marry Melanie soon. Scarlett tries to persuade Ashley to go with her on the engaged party, but is refused by Ashley gently. It is on the very party where Scarlett meets Rhett who sees her embarrassment and has a quarrel with her. Out of hatred, Scarlett decides to marry Charles, Malaine's brother as a way of revenge.
Things never go so smoothly, especially in such a classic story. Two months later, Charles is dead in the war and Scarlett finds herself pregnant. Shortly after the boy is delivered, Scarlett is invited to Atlanta by Malaine to be with her.
The war becomes tenser and tenser, and Scarlett is asked to help nurse the wounded. On a ball, she meets Rhett again who has become a successful merchant. This time they dance together at the ball. Rhett becomes interested in Scarlett, or maybe, he has fallen in love with her as soon as he first meets her.
The war is going badly for the Confederacy. Atlanta is under siege. Most people have run away from Atlanta, but Malaine is pregnant and in labor with no doctor available at that time. With no other ways, Scarlett has to fend for herself and finally they run to the Union army safely. Under the help of Rhett, all of them reach Tara, Scarlett's home and find a miserable situation of her family. Scalett decides to rebuild
up the family by herself but it's really a hard job. And in the process of the building, she eventually sees Ashley's weakness and incompetence. In despair, Scarlett meets Frank Kennedy, her sister's fiancé, who has enough money to pay the taxes of Tara. Thus Scarlett betrays her sister and marries Frank in order to get his money to defend Tara.
However, marrying Frank doesn't seem a smart decision, for Frank is really talentless in business. So Scarlett decides to run her own business with Rhett's help. Finally after many misfortunes and twists, Scarlett marries Rhett and lives happily for a period of time. But misfortune comes to her again, their daughter falls from horse's back and dead. Since then, Rhett cannot wake up from the sadness, and even leaves home at the end. Not until that last moment does Scarlett realizes that her true love is Rhett. She makes up her mind to look for and find Rhett. She knows she can manage it. But now she has to go back to Tara and make out a way. She has been too tired. She leaves all those to tomorrow, for tomorrow is another day!
All above is about the book, a really long and complicated story. After reading the story, I appreciate Scarlett, the heroine quite much. She used to be a proud and self-willed girl who treated her love and feeling casually. To some degree, marrying Charles as revenge is fairly a childish way to deal with her love to Ashley. Even after she gives birth to her first baby and moves to Atlanta, she still changes little. She enjoys going to balls and parties, even during the time Charles is just dead and many restrictions are placed upon her.
So when does Scarlett become mature? I guess maybe after she sees much sadness during the war when she works as a nurse, and Melaine is always good to her, she knows more about the world and changes her attitude toward Melaine gradually. So when Melaine is pregnant and in labor, she is the person who fends Melaine and helps her to survive the war. We can see her ability and responsibility in this plot for the first time. She is not that self-willed girl any more. Her toughness and responsibility becomes more obvious when they go back to Tara. After seeing the miserable scene in her home, she makes her mind up to rebuild the house and regain the glory they used to have. She is the only person who burdens all the people's livelihoods. Without her,
maybe the whole family has been dead in an attack. But actually she is just a weak woman who deserves someone's protection at that time. However, in such a situation, with an incapable Ashley and without the help of Rhett, Scarlett has to be strong and takes on all the burdens because she has to live on. Till here, I begin to be touc hed by her toughness and sacrifice.
Maybe someone will think it is unreasonable for Scarlett to tempt Frank. There should be some other ways. But in my opinion, it's reasonable. Scarlett sacrifices much for the family while her sisters just enjoy her sacrifice and are as delicate as they used to be. Actually to Scarlett, it's also a sacrifice. After all, she marries Frank out of interest instead of love.
What touched me most is the love between Scarlett and Rhett. I believe that Rhett falls in love with Scarlett the first moment he sees her. And Rhett really does much for Scarlett. During that hard time, it is Rhett who gives Scarlett his support other than Ashley or her other two husbands. However, Scarlett is addicted to Ashley almost from beginning to the end. Fortunately, she wakes up in the end. In the story, Scarlett is destined to be with Rhett. Rhett is the only person who deserves Scarlett's true love. Ashley is just Scarlett's dream, so when she sees the reality, she finds out Ashley is not that person deserves her love. Though Mitchell didn't tell the ending of the story between Scarlett and Rhett clearly, I suppose the ending is quite clear in readers' mind. Scarlett is a girl who will grasp all the things if she wants to. The blood of optimis m and strong-mind flows in her veins since she was born. So she will regain Rhett's love if she wants to, let alone it is out of love which will make her stronger.
I think <Gone with the Wind> is about a girl’s story, and I learn much from Scarlett. Y ou could be childish and self-willed when you are young, but don't forget to grow up. Never depend on anyone for he will go one day, so try to be independent and strong even if you are a girl. Y ou have to be mature one day. It is important to cherish those who really love you, and remember to love in return. The most important one is the words in the end of the book,"Tomorrow is another day". Always be optimistic. Whatever happens, you still have to live on. So why not be hopeful at everything if they destined to happen.
Anyway, tomorrow is another day!
