The Controversial Reign of Empress Dowager Cixi
Hi everyone! For my history essay, I've decided to write about the fascinating and controversial life of Empress Dowager Cixi, who ruled China for almost 50 years in the late 1800s and early 1900s. She was one of the most powerful women in Chinese history and her reign saw a lot of ups and downs. Let me tell you her incredible story!
Cixi was born in 1835 into a pretty normal family. Her original name was Yehenara and she was from the Manchu Yehenara clan. When she was just 16 years old, she became a low-ranked concubine for the Emperor Xianfeng. This was super young, but back then royal concubines married really early.
In 1856, the emperor's wife died, leaving him without an empress. Yehenara was promoted to replace her as the new empress! Can you imagine being made empress as a teenager? She changed her name to Cixi, which means "smiling prosperous one." Little did anyone know, she would end up being one of the most powerful and controversial figures in Chinese history.
Just a year after becoming empress, Cixi gave birth to her only son, who would later become the famous Tongzhi Emperor
when he was just 5 years old. Sadly, Emperor Xianfeng died in 1861, leaving Cixi a widow with a young son as the new emperor. Under Qing dynasty rules, Cixi couldn't rule directly as empress dowager with such a young emperor. So along with the former emperor's wife Ci'an, she became co-regent to rule on behalf of her son.
This is where things started to get really juicy! Cixi and Ci'an did not get along at all and there was a huge power struggle between the two over who would control the young emperor. Using her smarts and alliances with influential people, Cixi was able to gain the upper hand. In 1863, she staged a coup and had Ci'an placed under permanent house arrest! From that point on, the ruthless Cixi was the true power behind the throne.
During Emperor Tongzhi's reign in the 1860s, there were a lot of problems Cixi had to deal with as regent. The Taiping Rebellion was raging, threatening to topple the Qing dynasty. There were also issues with the growth of foreign spheres of influence in China. Meanwhile, Cixi lived an extremely lavish lifestyle, spending tons of money on things like the beautiful Summer Palace.
In 1875, Emperor Tongzhi died suddenly at just 19 years old without any heir. Once again, Cixi was able to maneuver her way
into a regency over the next emperor, her nephew Guangxu who took the throne at age 4. As co-regent with Empress Dowager Ci'an (who she had put under house arrest years earlier!), Cixi ruled behind the scenes, making all the real decisions while the young emperor was just a figurehead.
As emperor, the well-intentioned but weak Guangxu pushed for reforms like modernizing the economy and government. But his attempts at change were constantly blocked by the
ultra-conservative Cixi who wanted to preserve traditional ways. She placed him under house arrest in 1898 after the "Hundred Days Reform" and ruled alone as empress dowager until her death.
During her final years in power from 1898-1908, Cixi had to deal with more foreign encroachment and demands to reform from revolutionaries like Dr. Sun Yat-sen. She tried to implement some reforms like developing industries, transportation and abolishing the civil service exam system. But it was too little, too late and there was growing unrest against Qing rule.
Looking back, people have very mixed views on Cixi's reign. On one hand, she was endlessly shrewd, outmaneuvering rivals to cling to power through a male-dominated system. She could be brutally repressive, lived an insanely extravagant lifestyle, and
resisted modernization for too long. But on the other hand, she did eventually start implementing reforms and her reign allowed the dying Qing dynasty to survive for several more decades.
So was Empress Dowager Cixi a power-hungry despot holding China back? Or a strong woman leader just trying her best to preserve the empire during difficult times? I'll let you decide! But either way, her dramatic life story is totally fascinating to me. From starting as a low concubine to becoming the real ruler of China through smarts and cunning, Cixi's rise and reign were truly epic. Let me know what you think about this controversial empress! Thanks for reading my essay!。
