When the telephone rings late at night, most women guess it must be one of only four or five people calling. A sister? Maybe. An emergency? Possibly. A mother? Probably not at that time of night. Much more probably it is a close female friend calling to tell you that she has split up with her boyfriend again or perhaps simply that a good movie has just started on TV.
At a time when families are spread far and wide and marriages often end in divorce, friendships are becoming more and more important. Erika, a 32-year-old lawyer, is strengthened by her ten-year friendship with her married friend Jane. “I was very sick on e night, so I called Jane at about 3:00 a.m. to talk about it,” she says. “She was very supportive and even came over to take me to the doctor’s the next morning.”
As American TV shows like Friends, which follows the lives of a very close group of young friends, have become more popular, many of us are beginning to see the value of such friendships. TV shows like this tell us that our romantic relationships may not last, but we need to keep in touch with our close friends if we want to survive.
A TV show called Real Women is about the lives and relationships of five former school friends. In this show, family, husbands, and work are all less important than friendships. One of its actresses says the show reflects her own experience. “Friendship is a bout commitment. I don’t see some of my friends for ages but when we get together, it is as if time hasn’t passed.”
This is true of Erika and Jane’s friendship. With Erika’s family 200 miles away,it is Jane who keeps a spare set of keys to Erika’s apa rtment and waters her plants whenever she is away. “Having Jane around gives me a certain amount of freedom. It is not the kind of thing that you could ask anyone to do, but she knows I would do the same for her.” Erika feels that because she no longer sees her family every day, she now enjoys a closer relationship with her best friend. Jane, who may move to a different city soon, is worried about leaving such a support system of
friends. “My friends have more to do with my life than my parents and, therefore, I don’t have to spend a lot of time explaining things to them. Friends are more up to date with what is happening.”
4.According to the passage, a late-night phone call for most women is probably from_____.
A.a friend
B. a doctor
C. a stranger
D. a relative
shows like Friends tell us that_____.
A.marriages with friends often end up in failure
B.friendship fades as time goes by
C.close friends help us face problems in life
D.families and work are as important as friends
6.From the passage, we can learn that Erika and Jane_______.
A.live far away from each other
B. trust and support each other in daily life
C.spend a lot of time explaining things
D. have been friends for 32 years
7.Which of the statements will the author probably agree with?
A.A near friend is more helpful than a faraway relative.
B.Long distance makes the hearts closer.
C.However far away we’re, parents worry about us.
D.Both marriage and friendship demand commitment.

Growing mushrooms (蘑菇) is probably the easiest thing you can do even if you are new to mushroom growing. It is becoming more common because restaurants are starting to create more dishes that include mushrooms.
Mushroom growing is easy. To start, you need to have a space where you are going to grow these mushrooms. After you have started the mushroom growing, you should regularly check that your mushrooms grow properly and that they are not being attacked by any pesticides (农药) or any other animals or something that could be dangerous to them. That is the worst part of mushroom developing. Protect your mushroom farm well with a fence (围栏) or a gate so that only you and your workers can get in and out.

Thousands of years ago, people didn’t know that the Earth moved. They thought the sun really did move across the sky. The Greek god Helios was said to drive the sun around the sky with his chariot (战车). But now, these ideas have all changed. Nowadays, it is the sun that drives our “chariot” around the sky.
So what does all this mean? Well, quite simply, there is now a plane (or “chariot”) that is powered by the sun. It has special parts in its wings. These parts absorb power from the sun. They absorb so much power that they can carry on flying at night. In the Greek myths (希腊神话), Helios had to take a break at night. It seems we’re finally even more efficient than the gods themselves.
This plane is called Solar Impulse (“太阳驱动”号). It will fly across the US in May. This is very important for the future of the world.
So why is solar energy so good for us? Well, other kinds of energy cause a few problems. If you live in China, you’ve probably noticed the pollution. This is caused by burning coal or gas to make energy. The heat and chemicals (化学制品) from this make things work. But if we use the heat from the sun, we don’t have to burn anything, and there’s no pollution.
Solar energy is not all there yet. It needs to be improved. But the best thing about it is that, unlike coal and gas, it doesn’t run out.Solar Impulse could keep flying forever. Well, actually, the sun will run out too, one day, but not for another 5 billion years. That’s a pretty long flight.
12.What does “chariot” really refer to in the last sente nce of Paragraph 1?
A.The Earth.
B.Birds.
C.Solar Impulse.
D.The Greek god
13.In the passage, what is mentioned as the cause of pollution in China?
A. Overpopulation.
B.Heavy traffic.
ing solar energy.
D.Burning coal or gas.
14.What does the writer mean by “That’s a pretty long flight”?
A.It takes a lot of time to get Solar Impulse going.
B.Solar Impulse has a long way to go to take the place of the sun.
C.Solar Impulse will be in use for a long time.
D.Solar Impulse moves very slowly.
15.The passage is most probably taken from___________.
A.a Greek myth
B.a science magazine
C.a story-book
D.a science fiction
