A A nuclear fuel element comprises an outer line divided into two equal portions by a trans- , verse partition, each of the portions comprising an inlet duct for liquid coolant and a plurality of tubular elements for vaporizing the coolant disposed symmetrically about the axis of the fuel element, the inlet duct being connected to each tubular element in the vicinity of the partition by means of radial throttling ducts adapted to throttle the liquid coolant and to form a rotating liquid film on the inner walls of the tubular elements. The fuel element shown in Fig.1 comprises a line 1 divided longitudinally into two halves of a partition 3 and surrounded by a sheath 2,the space between the lines and sheath being filled, if desired, by thermal insulation or stagnant gas. Each half contains a central inlet duct 4 with a plurality of ducts 5 arranged around it, each duct 5 being surrounded by nuclear fuel 8. The right half of Fig. 2 shows a cross-sectional view and the left half a diagrammatic sectional view which shows that the central duct 4 is connected to each duct 5 by a tapering radial duct 7 which imparts rotation to the liquid film formed on the walls of the ducts 5. The spaces between the fuel 8 and the ducts may be filled with graphite 9. In an alternative arrangement shown in cross-section in Fig. 7, a plurality of inlet ducts 11 are
arranged on the periphery of the fuel element and communicate with the vapour-generating passages 12, the fuel 8 being in the form of solid rods.
