Text 1
W:Now that we have your information, you can take a seat over there and wait with the rest of the patients.
M:Sure. How long do you think it's going to take? I need to pick up my daughter at school.
W:It will be about 40 minutes. If you'd like, you can come back in half an hour.
Text 2
W:You know what? Let's eat at that Indian place tonight. I'm feeling a bit adventurous.
M:Are you sure? You don't like spicy food, and last time you had stomach problems all night.
W:I know, but there are other things I can eat. Besides, I have always been a big believer in second chances.
Text 3
W:What's the matter? You seem to be having trouble keeping up, which is a little unusual for you.
M:I just have a little pain in my stomach. I might have had a little too much for breakfast.
W:Next time, save the breakfast for after the workout.
Text 4
M:How was your first day? Did the students like you?
W:I don't think the students learned a thing or two. They were too busy staring at my feet. I had on two different colors of shoes. This is why I shouldn't have gotten dressed in dark this morning!
Text 5
M:Does it really make a difference if you put the baking soda in warm water before baking the bread?
W:I always used to do so, but most modern methods say that you can do without that step. Just make sure to add the correct amount to begin with.
Text 6
W:My mailbox got packed with lots of junk mail.
M:Don't open any, especially the attachments. They are very annoying.
W:You are right. I heard 90% of computer viruses are spread by email attachments. How do you deal with them?
M:I'm trying out a security program, and it seems to keep the junk mail out perfectly.
W:That's what I want. Do you have any other ways to defend your mailbox?
M:You should not give out your email address anywhere online.
W:Got it.
Text 7
M:How can I help you, Madam?
W:I want to get something nice for my mother.
M:For Women's Day? I've never heard of a woman that doesn't like flowers.
W:Hmm... maybe she is the exception. She prefers something more practical, like a coat to wear.
M:Ah-hah! How about the blue scarf? This one is our best-seller and it is half the normal price.
W:Emm... I guess she'll go wild over the red one there.
M:It has been reserved already. And this color is out of stock. Why not pick the orange? Warm color as well and 20% discount is offered.
W:Alright, that will do. By the way, do you provide gift-wrapping?
M:Sure. But it's free for our members only. You can fill out the form before you pay, otherwise it would require an extra charge.
W:Sounds good. Where can I get it done?
M:The service counter is right over there next to the cashier desk.
Text 8
W:Could you come back, Granddad? You haven't paid yet.
M:Betty, just let him go.
W:But he took some newspapers away without paying.
M:I know.
W:Why? You make me confused.
M:He lives nearby and he would just glance at the newspaper headlies, read the political sections and return them later.
W:Why does he have such a right?
M:He used to be a hero during the war time and everyone respects him.
W:I see. Does he live by himself?
M:Yes, he has no children and his wife passed away when he was in the battle.
W:He must be lonely.
M:I bet. But he is always busy telling the children stories.
W:How respectable!
Text 9
W:Hey, James. What's wrong? You don't look well at all.
M:I think I just have a bad cold.
W:Oh, you don't look like you have a bad cold. You look terrible and your skin looks a little purple.
M:What?
W:Purple skin. It says on the Internet that it is a sign of a rare disease called the Burafa virus.
M:Burafa virus? I've never heard of that. Come on.
W:Look at this website. The owner is a well-known man named Dr. Simon. And he says on his blog that he loves working with animals.
M:Animals? What about humans?
W:He said something about the cough. It's another symptom for the Burafa virus. You cough twice, not once or three times, and that's a clear sign of the disease. It also says that once the cough sets in, the person has only a week to live.
M:I've had enough. You're spending too much time online.
Text 10
Several years ago, I was employed overseas so I decided to leave my black cat Larry with my mother. It was hard. Because I love my cat so much. I couldn't imagine living without him. But I had to do that. Plus, my mother had been feeling lonely lately, and I hoped he would change that. Those days were difficult, because Larry was already like a son to me. I asked Mother to share video of Larry online as frequently as possible.
After two years, I was ready to get him back. Before I could do that, I got a call from my mother. She said she had fallen asleep earlier and woke up to him on her chest, meowing and pushing her face. He had never done that before. She smelled something strange, jumped out of bed, and found the kitchen on fire.
Oh God, my mom is alive because of Larry. He had been protecting us in his way. He really sees us as his family. I guess this is what love is. It doesn't matter whether you are a human or a cat. You give love and you get love. And I know that Larry loves us, just like we love him. Oh, by the way, he's my mother's now. She just couldn't leave Larry after that, and I'm totally OK with it.

(2021·日照市高三第一次校际联考) Tyler attended my class for a semester. He had anger management issues. He had been suspended many times in previous years. When he entered my class in his senior year, I assumed the worst.
In my class, if Tyler got an answer wrong, he would become angry. About a month into the year, I was still trying to connect with Tyler. I can usually get students involved in class discussions or at least motivate them to sit quietly and attentively. By contrast, Tyler was just loud and unpleasant.
One day, Tyler was talking while I was teaching. In the middle of the lesson, I said, “Tyler, why don't you join our discussion in stead of having one of your own?” With that, he got up from his chair, pushed it over, and yelled something rude. I referred Tyler to the headmaster and he received a week's out-of-school suspension.
The week Tyler was out of school was wonderful but the suspension week soon came to an end. On the day of Tyler's return, I stood at the door waiting for him. As soon as I saw him, I asked Tyler to talk to me for a moment. He seemed unhappy to do it but agreed. I told him that I wanted to start over with him. I also told him that if he felt like he was going to lose control in class, he had my permission to step outside the door for a moment to collect himself.
From that point on, Tyler was a changed student. He listened and he participated. He was a smart student, something I could finally witness in him. He even stopped
a fight between two other students one day. At the end of the year, Tyler wrote me a thank-you note about how good the year had been for him. Today I still find it touching to reread when I get stressed about teaching.
This experience changed me as a teacher. I came to understand that students are people who have feelings and who don't want to feel cornered. They want to learn but they also want to feel as if they have some control over themselves. I never made assumptions again about students before they came into my class. Every student is different; no two students react in the same way.

(2021·湖南省四校高三摸底调研联考) Everyone loves a holiday! A little time off for some muchneeded R & R(rest and relaxation) can be exactly the thing to refresh oneself. That said, if you're struggling to think of your next destination, then look no further. Don't waste time debating. Let your blood decide.
Everybody has a lineage (宗系). Recently, finding out more about our family origins has become popular. By the start of 2019, 26 million people had taken an ancestry DNA test at home, according to a report by MIT Technology Review. They believe by 2021 this number will have risen to 100 million.
This trend has been noticed by opportunistic travel operators. Some are looking to provide a service that allows people to both trace their heritage—by literally going back to their roots—and travel to the destinations which their ancestors originated from.
Airbnb, an online lodging marketplace, recently partnered 23andMe, a DNA testing and analysis company, to offer recommendations that encourage travelers to walk in the footsteps of their forefathers. And they aren't the only ones. The Shelbourne hotel in Dublin has its own advisor. Hellen Kelly offers consultations to help guests trace their Iris h origin using official records. “This allows them to ‘fill in the blanks of their Irish ancestry’,” she told Good Morning America. The Conte Club, a luxury travel company, offers custom travels based on DNA tests. “These
experiences are about exploring deeper into who we really are,” said Conte Club CEO Rebecca Fielding in an article in the CondéNast Traveller. “It might be the most meaningful trip we can take.”
So next time you think of going on vacation, why not take a DNA test first? Once you know how far your family has come, take the time to holiday back.

An ageless question: When is someone “old”?
What does “old” really mean these days? This isn't a meaningless question—not only does the definition of “old” have an outsized impact on how we feel about ourselves (not to mention how others view us ), it also matters to policymakers determining how to plan for aging populations.
The United Nations historically has defined older persons as people 60 years old or over (sometimes 65). It doesn't matter whether you live in the United States, China or Senegal, even though life expectancy is quite different in each of those countries. Everyone becomes old at 60.
Researchers Sergei Scherbov and Warren Sanderson, who study aging, are suggesting overturning the one-size-fits-all definition of “old”. Instead, they talk about “prospective age”, which looks to the future. Everyone with the same prospective age has the same expected remaining years of life.
Scherbov explained that “young” and “old” are relative concepts, and their common reference point is life expectancy. And that “old” would vary between nations makes sense, especially between more and less developed countries, with differences in education, death rates, access to health care and life expectancy.
But who is “old” also varies—widely—between individuals. The point, says Scherbov, is that personal age is dependent on our “characteristics” —understanding abilities, disability, health history and even education levels. Those with more education tend not to smoke, exercise more frequently, have better diets and have regular checkups—and, therefore, live longer, meaning the beginning of their old age comes later, says Scherbov.

32.What is the first paragraph mainly about? C
A.How we feel about ourselves.
B.The definition of “old”.
C.The importance of the definition of “old”.
D.The plan for aging populations.

根据第一段第二句中的“not only does the definition of ‘old’...for aging populations”可知,本段主要讲的是对“老”的定

33.What does the underli ned phrase “prospective age” in Paragraph 3 refer to according to the text? A
A.The expected remaining years of one's life.
B.The beginning of one's old age.
C.The differences of our “characteristics”.
D.The age when one becomes old.

根据第三段最后一句“Everyone with the same prospective age has the same expected remaining years of life.”并结合语境可推知,prospective age即the expected remaining years of life。

故选A。

34.What similarity does Scherbov think “young” and “old” have? D A.Understanding abilities.
B.Nations.
C.Education.
D.The reference point.

根据第四段第一句中的“their common reference point is life expectancy”可知,“年轻”和“年老”的共同参照标准是预期寿命。

故选D。

35.Which of the following helps one to live longer according to Scherbov? D A.Doing as much exercise as possible.
B.Losing weight.
C.Studying history.
D.Improving the education level.

根据最后一段最后一句中的“Those with more education tend not to smoke, exercise more frequently, have better diets and have regular checkups—and, therefore, live long er”可知,受教育更多的人活得更长,由此可推知,提高受教育水平有助于一个人活得更长。

(2021·武汉市部分学校高三起点质检) So often we find ourselves on autopilot—waking up in the same home, putting on the same clothes and taking the same transportation to the same old job. 36.D And while it's perfectly natural for humans to stick to routine, there's much to be discovered beyond the limits of our comfort zones.
There is no exception to a man aged 53. 37.G He knew it was going to be hard to find another job. He also knew it was now or never to pursue his lifelong dream of owning his own restaurant. But he was too old to compete with the young and too weak to do any labor work.
38.F He didn't want to spend his rest life sitting around and feeling pity for himself. Also, Mrs. Mockenhaupt actively encouraged him to move on, considering it a perfect chance for two of them to start their own business with plenty of time and without the disturbance of children.
39.A Brian found just what he wanted eight blocks from home—an existing cafe that was underperforming and whose owner was highly motivated to get out of his lease(租约). 40.C But the problem was that he had never financially planned for this day. He had to borrow money from friends and relatives. After that, he changed the name to Black Dog Coffee, and made it alive. Eighteen years later, they're still there and doing better than ever. Brian says he's extremely grateful for the decision to make a change.
A.Then came the opportunity.
B.The thought filled him with anxiety.
C.That was exactly what Brian needed.
D.Even our New Year's decisions to change hardly make it.

解析:
