2020年保定第一中学高三英语上学期期中考试试卷及答案
第一部分阅读(共两节,满分40分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项
A
Bird migration is described as the regular, seasonal movement of bird populations from one place to another and back again.
The longer days and rich food of the northern summer provide greater chances for birds to feed their young. The longer daylight hours and enormous food resources allow birds to lay larger eggs than those of related non-migratory species that remain in the tropics all year round. As the days shorten in autumn and the breeding period is over, the birds return to warmer regions where the available food supply differs little with the seasons changing. The advantages of migration make up for the high stress, physical exertion(消耗), and other risks of the migration.
Day length is the primary environmental factor that encourages birds to prepare for migration. They have an increased appetite which results in weight gaining, giving them the fat reserves that provide energy for their migratory flight. They also show more activity at night, which is when most birds migrate. While the length of day is the primary reason for migration, birds also respond to temperature changes. For example, if a spring is late and the temperature is lower than normal, birds delay migration; if a spring is early, birds also begin migration early.
The timing of the migratory cycle must allow birds to arrive on the breeding site so that there is time tobuild a breeding place, mate, lay the eggs, and hatch the young before the rich food is available to feed the young in the nest. Similarly, if birds wait until the climate in their northern breeding grounds becomes tolerable(可忍受的), there will be no time togain the necessary weight that provides the energy needed for their southbound migration.
1. Why do birds migrate to the north in spring?
A The temperature in the south has risen.
B. They like traveling and enjoy the journey.
C. The summer there is warmer than that in the south.
D. The environment there is more suitable for them to feed their baby birds.
2. What are the two factors that cause birds to migrate?
A. Day length and food supply.
B. Night length and high stress.
C. Temperature changes and daylength.
D. Food supply and temperature changes.
3. Which can be the best title for the text?
A. Birds' Life

What is the secret of happiness? A new study finds that happiness comes from exercise. People who exercise actively bring themselves happiness equal to earning an extra $25,000 ayear.
Instead of recording extra hours at work in hopes of getting a raise, maybe you should hit the gym instead, as it could make you just as happy as that extra money. An interesting new study, published in the Lancet, found that people who are physically active have a greater sense of well—being than those who are inactive-and that active individuals feel as good as inactive people who earn $ 25,000 more per year.
Researchers from Oxford and Yale Universities used data gathered from more than 1.2milion Americans. They were asked, “How many times have you felt mentally unwell in the past30 days. for example, due to stress, depression, or emotional problems?” Participants were also asked about their exercise habits and were able to choose from 75 diverse physical activities, including doing housework and childcare, running, weightlifting, and cycling. The researchers found that people who exercise regularly feel bad for an average of 35 days per year, while inactive people feel bad for an additional 18 days.
All exercise types were associated with a lower mental health burden. Social physical activities(that is to say, team sports such as football, basketball, etc)had an even more positive effect, which can best help people relax mind.
It is possible for some to get too much exercise. From Business Insider'sreport on the study. “The mental health of those participants who exercised for longer than three hours a day suffered more than that of those who weren't particularly physically active.” The ideal amount seems to be three to five training sessions per week. lasting 30 to 60 minutes each.
But the conclusion should be that any amount helps, so don't stress about hitting that perfect balance: “All exercise types were associated with a lower mental health burden than not exercising.”
4. The question asked in Paragraph one is meant to ______.
A. introduce the researchers
B. tell the secret
C. draw a conclusion

B. The more exercise you take, the higher mental health burden you will get.
C. overdoing exercising will do harm to people's mental health.
D. doing exercise is better than not doing it.
7. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Exercise can bring as much pleasure as an income rise.
B. The secret of happiness has nothing to do with wealth.
C. Choosing the right form of exercise is of vital importance.
D. The key to keep young is to exercise regularly.

When almost everyone has a mobile phone, why are more than half of Australian homes still paying for a landline(座机)?
These days you’d be hard pressed to find anyone in Australia over the age of 15 who doesn’t own a mobile phone. In fact plenty of younger kids have one in their pocket. Practically everyone can make and receive calls anywhere, anytime.
Still, 55 percent of Australians have a landline phone at home and only just over a quarter(29%)rely only on their smartphones according to a survey(调查). Of those Australians who still have a landline, a thirdconcedethat it’s not really necessary and they’re keeping it as a security blanket — 19 percent say they never use it while a further13 percent keep it in case of emergencies. I think my home falls into that category.
More than half of Australian homes are still choosing to stick with their home phone. Age is naturally a factor (因素)— only 58 percent of Generation Ys still use landlinesnow and then, compared to 84 percent of Baby Boomers who’ve perhaps had the same home number for 50 years. Age isn’t the only factor; I’d say it’s also to do with the makeup of your household.
Generation Xers with young families, like my wife and I, can still find it convenient to have a home phone rather than providing a mobile phone for every family member. That said, to be honest the only people who ever ring our home phone are our Baby Boomers parents, to the point where we play a game and guess who iscalling before we pick up the phone(using Caller ID would take the fun out of it).
How attached are you to your landline? How long until they go the way of gas street lamps and morning milk deliveries?
8. What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about mobilephones?
A. Their target users.
B. Their wide popularity.
C. Their major functions.
D. Their complex design.
9. What does the underlined word “concede” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Admit.
B. Argue.
C. Remember.
D. Remark.
10. What can we say about Baby Boomers?
A. They like smartphone games.
B. They enjoy guessing callers’ identity.
C. They keep using landline phones.
D. They are attached to their family.
11. What can be inferred about the landline from the last paragraph?
A. It remains a family necessity.
B. Itwill fall out of use some day.
C. It may increase daily expenses.
D. It is as important as the gas light.
D
If you’ve ever had a dog, you know just how deep a connection you can develop with “man’s best friend”. But a dog has a much shorter life span — about 12 to 15 years long — than humans, which means every dog owner has to go through the heartbreaking moment when their loving pet passes away.
Why not make a clone of that dog then? This is the solution offered by a South Korean company, Sooam Biotech Research Foundation. The company has successfully cloned at least 400 dogs, mostly for US customers, ever since it pioneered the technique in 2005. Now, Sooam Biotech is planning to introduce their business toUKdog owners, offering them dogs that look just like their lost ones.
Meanwhile, another dog is selected to supply an egg.Researchers then replace the DNA in the egg with that from the skin cell and implant the egg into the womb (子宫) of a female dog. The egg grows into a puppy over the
following two months. To clone a dog, researchers first need to take a skin cell from a living dog or one that has just died.
The whole process takes less than a day, but it comes at a shockingly high price — around £63,000 (614,000 yuan). But if you can’t afford it now, you can also save the cells in a laboratory and access them at a later date. Just like identical twins of humans, they share the exact same DNA but there will still be small differences between them. “The spots on a Dalmatian clone will be different, for example,” Insung Hwang, head of Sooam Biotech, toldThe Guardian. However, as magical as cloning might sound, there is no guarantee that the cloned dog will be a perfect replica of the original one.
Dog owners will also have to accept the fact that personality is not “clone-able”. Apart from genes, personality is also determined by upbringing and environment, which are both “random elements [that] cloning technologies simply cannot overcome”, Professor Tom Kirkwood atNewcastle University,UK, toldThe Telegraph.
Perhaps bringing our dogs back with cloning is not the best way to remember them after all.
Kirkwood, a dog owner himself, pointed out: “An important aspect of our relationship with them is coming to terms with the pain of letting go.”
12. According to the article, Sooam Biotech Research Foundation is ______.
A. working on plans to help dog owners enjoy their pets longer
B. offering a way to help dogs give birth to more puppies
C. providing a service that will make copies of pet dogs
D. introducing a completely new technique to clone dogs
13. Which of the following statements about dog cloning is TRUE according to the article?
A. Dog cloning technology hadn’t been put into practice until recently.
B. Dog cloning is very expensive and usually takes several months to complete.
C. Dog cloning is very popular among US andUKpet owners.
D. Cloned dogs might develop different habits and characteristics even though they look very similar.
14. Which of the following shows the correct order of the dog cloning process?
a. an egg is taken from another dog
b. a skin cell is taken from the pet dog and saved in a laboratory
c. the egg is placed in the womb of a female dog
d. the DNA of the egg is replaced by the DNA from the skin cell

选项中有两项为多余选项“You are what you eat.”___16___. But the opposite is also true. In fact, if you’re between the ages of 10 and 19, eating too much junk food can harm your body and your brain.
Junk food shapes adolescent brains in ways thatimpair their ability to think, learn and remember. It can also make it harder to control impulsive behaviors, says Amy Reichelt.___17___.
She and two other researchers at Western recently reviewed more than 100 studies (including their own) about how poor food choices can impact adolescent brains.
They discovered one problem: Adolescent brains are not yet fully formed.___18___. First, adolescent brains are still developing the ability to assess risks and control actions. Second, teen brains get more pleasure than adult brains do from rewarding behaviors such as eating junk food. Third, adolescent brains can be more easily influenced by their environment.___19___. It can also be influenced by diet. Together, these all can combine to make junk food both hard to resist and extra bad for teen health.
Other researchers have found links between brain health and what teenage kids eat. Felice Jacka is one of them. She is an expert in nutrition and psychiatry atDeakinUniversityinVictoria,Australia.
In one 2013 study, she and her team recruited more than 2,000 11- to 14-year-olds living inLondon,England. They analyzed their emotions and behavior over the previous two weeks in the research. The researchers scored each kid’s answers for signs of depression, and found adolescents who ate the most junk food were nearly 50 percent more likely to show signs of depression.
___20___. The data are unclear. Some research suggests that processed foods, such as lunch meat, increases inflammation(炎症)in the body and the brain. Inflammation is one of the body’s responses to cellular injury and involves swelling. Other research has linked inflammation with depression.

E. That means eating junk food does harm to adolescent health.
F. It may even up a teen’s risk of depression and anxiety, she notes.
G. Why should adolescents resist eating junk food?
