Where is it possible to drive from Rome to Moscow, Madrid, Paris, Vienna, and Stockholm without going to Europe? The answer is in the state of Maine!
Throughout the United States there are many towns and cities that have been named after not only European cities but other countries as well, such as China, Poland, Norway, Sweden, and Denmark. Just how many New World place names are recycled from
the Old World names has never been tallied, but one researcher found forty-one Londons, fifty-six Berlins, twenty-four Dublins, thirty-two Athenses, and twenty-seven Moscows, among others!
Reasons for European place names differ. Some were in memory of settlers’ former homes, others in honor of historic events. Founded in 1818 by John Coffee, Robert Beaty, John D. Carroll, and John Read, Athens is one of the oldest incorporated cities in the State of Alabama. The town was first called Athenson, and the name was then shortened to Athens, after the ancient city in Greece. More interestingly, some names were given by mistake. For instance, the people of Moscow, Kansas, wanted to their city to follow the name of the explorer Moscoso. They shortened his name to Mosco, and an official in Washington, thinking the Kansans couldn't spell, added a ‘W’.

He met her at a party. She was outstanding; many guys were after her, but no one paid attention to him. After the party, he invited her for coffee. She was surprised, In order not to appear rude, she went along.
As they sat in a nice coffee shop, he was too nervous to say anything and she felt uncomfor table. Suddenly, he asked the waiter. “Could you please give me some salt? I’d like to put it in my coffee.”
They stared at him. He turned red, but when the salt came he put it in his coffee and drank. Curious, she asked. “Why salt with coffee?” He explained. “When I was a little boy, I lived near the sea, I liked playing in the sea… I could feel its salty taste, like salty coffee. Now every time I drink it. I think of my childhood and my hometown. I miss it and my parents, who are still there.”

Sweetheart, I don’t exactly like salty coffee. But as it mattered so much to you, I’ve learnt to enjoy it. Having you with me was my greatest happiness. If I could live a second time, I hope we can be together again, even if it means that I have to drink salty coffee for the rest of my life.

Archaeology, like many academic words, comes from Greek and means, more or less, “the study of old things”. So, it is really a part of the study of history. However, most historians use paper evidence, such as letters, paintings and photographs, but archaeologists(考古学家)learn from the objects left behind by the humans of long ago. Normally, these are the hard materials that don’t break down or disappear very quickly—things like human bones and objects made from stone and metal.
It is very unusual to find anything more than the hard evidence of history—normally, the bacteria in the air eat away at soft materials, like bodies, clothes and things made of wood. Occasionally, things are different.
In 1984, two men made an amazing discovery while working in a bog called Lindow
Moss, in the north of England. A bog is a very wet area of earth, with a lot of plants growing in it. It can be like a very big and very thick vegetable soup—walk in the wrong place and you can sink and disappear forever. The men were working when one of them saw something sticking out—a human foot! Naturally, the men called the police, who then found the rest of the body. Was it a case of murder? Possibly—buy it was a death nearly two thousand years old. The two men had found a body from the time of the Roman invasion of Britain. Despite being so old, this body had skin, muscles, hair and internal organs—the scientists who examined him were able to look inside the man’s stomach and find the food that he had eaten for his last meal!
Why was this man so well preserved? It was because he was in a very watery environment, safe from the bacteria that need oxygen to live. Also, the water in the bog was very acidic. The acid preserved the man’s skin in the way that animal sk in is preserved for leather coats and shoes.
How did he die? Understandably, archaeologists and other scientists wanted to know more about the person that they called “Lindow Man”. His hands and fingernails suggested that he hadn’t done heavy manual work i n this life—he could have been a rich man. They found that he hadn’t died by accident. The archaeologists believe that he was sacrificed to three different gods.
52. Which language does the word “archaeology” come from?

53. The word “these” in the first paragraph refers to _____.
A. letters
B. photographs
C. paintings
D. objects
54. Which of the following helped to preserve “Lindow Man”?

Kids' health: Four steps for fighting stress
Everybody gets stressed from time to time. 56 Some ways of dealing with stress-like screaming or hitting someone - don't solve much. But other ways, like talking to someone you trust, can lead you to solving your problem or at least feeling better. Try taking these four steps the next time you are stressed:
(1) Get support. When you need help, reach out to the people who care about you. Talk
to a trusted adult, such as a parent or other relatives.57 They might have had similar problems, such as dealing with a test, or the death of a beloved pet.
(2) Don't take it out on yourself. Sometimes when kids are stressed and upset they
take it out on themselves. Oh, dear, that's not a good idea. Remember that there
are always people to help you. Don't take it out on yourself. 58
(3) Try to solve the problem. After you're calm and you have support from adults and
friends, it's time to get down to business. 59 Even if you can't solve it all, you can solve a piece of it.
(4) Be positive. Most stress is temporary. Remember stress does go away, especially
when you figure out the problem and start working on solving it. These steps aren't magic, but they do work. And if you can stay positive as you make your way through
a tough time, you'll help yourself feel better even faster. 60
A. Ask for a helping hand to get you through the tough situation.
B. Notice your friends' feelings and find a way to help them.
C. And don't forget about your friends.
D. You need to figure out what the problem is.
E. Ah, it feels so good when the stress is gone.
F. Different people feel stress in different ways.
G. Then, find a way to calm down.
