VOLUNTEERS
Each nation has many good people who help to
take care of others. For example, some high school and college students in the United States
often spend many hours as volunteers(志愿
者)inhospitals, orphanages(孤儿院)or homes for
the aged. They read books to the people in these places, or they just visit them and play games with them or listen to their problems. Other young volunteers go and work in the homes of people who are sick or old. They paint, clean up, or repair their houses, do their shopping or mow(割草)their lawns(草坪,草场). For boys who no longer have fathers there is an organization called Big Brothers. College students and other men take these boys to baseball games or on fishing trips and help them to get to know things that boys usually learn from their fathers. Each city has a number of clubs where boys and girls can go to play games or learn crafts(手艺). Some of these clubs show movies or organize short trips to the mountains, the beaches, museums or other places of interest. Most of these dubs use a lot of high school and college students as volunteers because they are young enough to remember the problems of younger boys and girls. Volunteers believe that some of the happiest people in the world are those who help to bring
happiness to others.

Some small children don't know it's not polite to laugh at others. Some of them often laugh at a lame(瘸的)or blind(盲的)person, or someone in bad clothes. But when they grow up, they learn not to hurt people's feelings by laughing at their problems. They learn to laugh
at other things. Most important, they learn to laugh at themselves. For example, you make a mistake and lose in a basketball match. Do you become angry? Or can you laugh at yourself and
hope to do better next time? If you can, you've really grown up.

Hotlines
Hotlines have become common in China. Some radio broadcasting stations use hotlines to encourage the listeners to take part in the talk shows.
That's a good idea. Yet, the fact is, some people do nothing but break the whole programme. Some people know little about the topic under
discussion. Sometimes they do not even know what the host is talking about. So the host has to tell the caller what the show is about. Usually the caller will ask a few questions which express his hope and show his ignorance(无知). Then the host has to answer and explain - how silly this is!
It wastes a lot of time.
It seems that some people phone the hotlines in fun. They just want to let the listeners hear them.
They don't care what the topic is, whether they themselves are interested in or how silly they appear to be.
I'm totally bored by those people. It's necessary for radio stations to improve the hotline programmes. In my opinion, if a caller doesn' t know what is going on , the operator should notlet the caller take part in it.
66. The sentence, "some people do nothing but break the whole programme " may tell us that
_______.
A. radio stations use hotlines in a wrong way
B.. it is a fact
C. it is a good idea
D.. some people have unclear thoughts

68. The host has to answer and explain __.
A. for the host works hard
B. because of the caller's ignorance
C. for the host likes talking to the caller
D.. because of a lot of questions raised by the caller
69. The passage doesn't tell us the idea __.
A. that some listeners phone the hotlines in fun
B.. that some people just want to be heard by others
C. that some people who don't care what the topic is must have realized that they appearto be silly
D.. what the hotline programmes are
70. The word "operator" in the last paragraph
refers to __.
A. listener
B. host
C. writer

第三节书面表达
Our class held a class meeting and the topic was whether we middle school students should make friends online. I have noted down their opinions as follows.
Opinions are divided. Some students think it is necessary to make friends online. In this way we can make many new friends and learn much more information. Besides, if we make foreign friends, we can improve English by sending e-mails. However, other students have different opinions. It is possible that people will make bad friends on the net and will be cheated. Some students will spend a lot of time chatting with the net friends, which will have a bad effect on their studies. Some may even fall into early love on the net.。
