The Ramayana tells the story of a battle between the Hindu (印度教的) god Vishnu and a demon (魔鬼) called Ravana. None of the gods could fight Ravana because of a promise they had foolishly made earlier. So Vishnu decided to be reborn as a man, and then he would be able to fight Ravana.
So Vishnu was born as the prince Rama. Rama was supposed to be king when his father died, but at the last minute his father decided to make his brother king instead. Rama and his other brother Lakshmana and Rama's wife Sita went away to live a simple life in the forest, where the demon Ravana's sister fell in love with Rama and tried to get Rama to leave Sita. When Rama said no, Ravana's sister attacked him, but Rama and his brother Lakshmana fought her off.
The demon went back to her brother Ravana on the island of Lanka and complained to him that Rama had attacked her. Also, Ravana's sister told him how beautiful Rama's wife Sita was. So he went to t he forest to see for himself.
When Ravana got to the forest, he found it was true. So he took Sita back to Lanka. Sita was very sad there and missed Rama very much.
Rama and his brother Lakshmana needed help to rescue Sita, so they went to see the king of the monkeys, Hanuman, who had the magic power to make himself bigger or smaller. Hanuman found Sita on the island of Lanka and told her that Rama was coming to save her. Sita was very happy, but then the demon Ravana caught Hanuman and set his tail on fire! In the end, however, Hanuman escaped and set fire to the whole island of Lanka.

In 1943, when George Patton took over the duties of commander, he soon discovered that the discipline of the 2nd army was really poor. Then he gave the orders: all the officers and soldiers should be through with breakfast before 7:30; no one should be late for work in the morning; soldiers with moust ache should shave daily. He required that every soldier should wear the helmet and necktie. Patton also set up a punishment system. Officers would be fined 50 dollars and soldiers 25 dollars if they broke the rules.
Patton's rigorous measures brought great shock to the whole army at once. Three days later, the 2nd army staff brought open their dislike of Patton and soldiers complained strongly because the arrival of Patton put an end to their comfortable life. But Patton ignored this.
Further, he gave the order that “The military rank (军衔) should be shown on the helmet”. A senior colonel (上校) believed that this rule meant to provide a
firing target for the enemy. He argued with Patton, “I often go to the battlegroun d. If I were dead, I could no longer serve you and my soldiers.”
Patton smiled after hearing that and said, “Colonel, get on my car and we'd have a tour on the front line.” When they reached there, the colonel found Patton's helmet, shoulders, collars and even the jeep all had three stars. As a result, the soldiers recognized the general in the jeep was Patton, so they laid down what was in the hand and stood at attention and showed respect to him, cheering. At this moment, Patton said to the colonel, “The soldiers depend on you leading them. They have to realize who their commander is. Commander ought to lead in front of the soldiers, even if it means to die. Then wear your military rank mark.” This colonel was completely convinced: “You are correct, General.”
Just one week later, Patton achieved obvious effect. This fact proved Patton's statement that he was able to make any army in high spirits in less than a week.
28. What is the text mainly about?
A. Patton's great organizing abilities.
B. Patton's effective management of army.
C. Patton's courage shown in the battlefield.
D. Patton's friendly relationship with soldiers.
29. The underlined word “rigorous” in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to “_____”.
A. strict
B. simple
C. strange
D. effective
30. At first, what was the colonel's attitude to Patton's rule about helmets?
A. Tolerant.
B. Doubtful.
C. Uncaring.
D. Dissatisfied.
31. Why did Patton ask the colonel to go to the front with him?
A. To test the colonel's courage.
B. To give the soldiers confidence.
C. To show his power over the army.
D. To explain the reasons for his rule.
D
For most visitors to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, your first stop is the Kilauea Visitor's Center. It is open daily from 7:45 am to 5:00 pm (the park itself is open 24 hours to give visitors the chance to view lava flows at night). Not far from the Visitor's Center is the Volcano House — an interesting hotel with great views of the Kilauea crater (火山口). The hotel includes a restaurant, gift shops and a snack bar (小吃店). Note that it will be closed for renovations (翻修) for much of this year.
There are two trip choices available: Half Day or Full Day. If you take the Half Day trip, you begin by checking out the Visitor's Center. Then take your time and drive around the Crater Rim Drive. Stop at the various sites and lookout points. Visiting the park in a half day will give you a memorable view of the amazing volcanoes. This is a great choice for families with kids and those who hope to learn something about Hawaii's volcanoes but don't desire to make an exploration out of it.
The Full Day trip starts with the Crater Rim Drive. Then you continue on to the Chain of Craters Road in the afternoon. Bring a picnic lunch and stop at the picnic area at the Kealakomo overlook halfway down the road. Continue driving towards the sea. Stop at Pu'u Loa for a look at some beautiful petroglyphs (岩石画) —drawings made in the volcanic rock by ancient Hawaiians. Then continue on to the end of the Chain of Craters Road. Find out if there will be viewable lava flows into the ocean. If so, stay until dark and sit in silence as the sun sets and the lava lights up as it flows into the ocean. Drive back up the Chain of Craters Road and end your volcano experience by enjoying dinner at a restaurant in the town of Volcano.
32. What can we learn about the Kilauea Visitor's Center?
A. It opens all day long.
B. It is under repair now.
C.It has a restaurant and a bar.
D. It is near the Volcano House.
33. The Half Day trip is most suitable for those who _____.
A. visit the park for the first time
B. travel with their family members
C. want a taste of Hawaii's volcanoes
D. decide to make an exploration in Hawaii
34. If you choose Full Day, you will _____.
A. enjoy some rock paintings by modern Hawaiians
B. drive mainly along the Chain of Craters Road
C. arrive at a restaurant before sunset
D. have lunch at the Volcano House
35. According to the last paragraph, a tourist can watch lava ______.
A. near the sea
B. at a picnic area
C. at the top of a volcano
D. in the town of Volcano
