基于学科实践发展核心素养的教学设计 英文

基于学科实践发展核心素养的教学设计 英文

基于学科实践发展核心素养的教学设计英文Here is a 1000-word English essay on the topic "Teaching Design Based on the Development of Core Competencies through Disciplinary Practice":The focus on developing core competencies in education has become increasingly prominent in recent years. Core competencies refer to the essential knowledge, skills, and attitudes that students should acquire to become well-rounded, adaptable, and successful individuals. These competencies go beyond the mastery of subject-specific content and emphasize the ability to apply learning in diverse real-world contexts. One of the key approaches to fostering core competencies is through disciplinary practice, which involves engaging students in authentic learning experiences within specific academic disciplines. The teaching design based on the development of core competencies through disciplinary practice requires a careful consideration of the desired learning outcomes, the selection of appropriate instructional strategies, and the creation of meaningful learning experiences that integrate theoretical knowledge and practical application. This approach aims to equip students with thenecessary skills and mindsets to navigate the complexities of the modern world and contribute positively to their communities. At the heart of this teaching design is the recognition that core competencies are not acquired in isolation but are developed through the application of disciplinary knowledge and skills. By immersing students in authentic learning tasks and challenges within a specific subject area, they can develop a deeper understanding of the discipline's concepts, principles, and methodologies. This not only enhances their content mastery but also fosters essential skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, and collaboration. One of the key components of this teaching design is the incorporation of project-based learning (PBL) or inquiry-based learning approaches. These strategies engage students in open-ended, real-world problems or investigations that require them to apply their disciplinary knowledge and skills to find solutions or uncover new insights. Through these experiences, students develop the ability to think critically, analyze information, make informed decisions, and communicate their findings effectively. For example, in a science classroom, students might be tasked with designing and conducting an experiment to investigate the effects of different variables on the growth of plants. This activity not onlyreinforces their understanding of scientific concepts related to plant biology but also cultivates skills such as experimental design, data collection and analysis, and scientific communication. Similarly, in a history class, students could be asked to research and present a historical event from multiple perspectives, requiring them to critically analyze primary sources, consider diverse viewpoints, and effectively communicate their findings. The teaching design based on the development of core competencies through disciplinary practice also emphasizes the importance of scaffolding and differentiation. Instructors should provide appropriate levels of support, guidance, and feedback to ensure that all students can engage meaningfully with the learning tasks and develop the necessary competencies. This may involve tailoring the complexity of the tasks, offering targeted instruction or coaching, and providing opportunities for self-reflection and peer feedback.Additionally, this teaching design encourages the integration of technology and digital tools to enhance the learning experience. Digital platforms can facilitate collaboration, data collection and analysis, and the communication of findings. They can also provide personalized feedback, adaptive learning experiences, and opportunities for students to showcase their work and receive feedback from a wider audience.Another crucial aspect of this teaching design is the alignment of assessment practices with the development of core competencies. Traditional assessments focused solely on content mastery may not adequately capture the multifaceted nature of core competencies. Instead, instructors should implement a range of assessment strategies, such as performance-based tasks, portfolios, and self-assessments, to evaluate students' ability to apply their knowledge and skills in authentic contexts. The implementation of this teaching design requires a shift in the role of the instructor from a primarily content-delivery approach to a facilitator of learning. Instructors should create learning environments that foster active engagement, collaborative problem-solving, and self-directed exploration. They should also provide opportunities for students to reflect on their learning, identify areas for improvement, and set personal goals for continued growth. The development of core competencies through disciplinary practice is not only beneficial for students but also has broader implications for education and society. By equipping students with the essential skills and mindsets to navigate the complexities of the modern world, this teaching design prepares them to be adaptable, innovative, and engaged citizens who can contribute positively to their communities and the global landscape. In conclusion, the teaching design based on the development of core competencies through disciplinary practice represents a promising approach to education that goes beyond the mere acquisition of content knowledge. By creating authentic learning experiences that integrate theoretical understanding and practical application, this design can help students develop the essential skills, mindsets, and dispositions needed to thrive in an ever-changing world. As educators continue to explore and refine this approach, it holds the potential to transform the educational landscape and empower the next generation of learners and leaders.。

By introducing elements of rhythm, music, and visual stimulation into exercise routines and athletic drills, instructors can tap into the inherent human attraction to beauty and creativity. This, in turn, can foster a deeper love for physical activity and encourage students toembrace an active lifestyle as a means of personal expression and artistic fulfillment. It is important to recognize that the pursuit of aesthetics in athletics is not merely about superficial appearances or shallow entertainmen篇2The Promoting Effect of Aesthetic Education on Physical EducationAs a student, I have come to realize the profound impact that aesthetic education can have on enhancing physical education. These two domains, often viewed as distinct entities, are intrinsically intertwined, and their harmonious integration can foster a holistic development of individuals, both physically and aesthetically.Physical education, as we all know, is a crucial component of our educational journey. It not only nurtures our physicalwell-being but also instills valuable life skills such as teamwork, discipline, and perseverance. However, when infused with the principles of aesthetic education, physical activities transcend mere exercise and become a canvas for artistic expression.Aesthetic education, rooted in the appreciation of beauty and the cultivation of artistic sensibilities, can elevate the practice of physical education in myriad ways. One of the most evident manifestations is the incorporation of rhythm, grace, and artistry into movement. Disciplines such as gymnastics, figure skating, and dance exemplify this seamless fusion, where athletes not only display remarkable physical prowess but also embody an artistic flair that captivates audiences. Moreover, aesthetic education fosters a heightened awareness of body awareness and control. By developing a keen sense of spatial awareness, balance, and poise, students can execute physical movements with greater precision and elegance. This synergy between physical and aesthetic elements enhances the overall performance and presentation, making physical education a spectacle to behold.Beyond the realm of performance, aesthetic education cultivates an appreciation for the beauty inherent in the human form and movement. Students learn to appreciate the intricate interplay of muscles, the fluidity of motion, and the harmony of body lines. This newfound appreciation can inspire individuals to pursue physical activities not solely for the sake of fitness but also for the sheer joy of artistic expression.Furthermore, aesthetic education encourages creativity and self-expression within physical education. Students are empowered to explore unconventional movements, experiment with new techniques, and infuse their personal styles into their routines. This freedom of expression not only fosters a sense of individuality but also nurtures a deeper connection between the mind, body, and emotions, facilitating a more holistic approach to physical development.Collaborative endeavors, such as team sports, also benefit from the integration of aesthetic education. By cultivating an appreciation for the beauty of coordinated movements, teamwork, and synchronization, students can develop a heightened sense of unity and cohesion. This aesthetic awareness can translate into more fluid and visually appealing team dynamics, elevating the overall experience for both participants and spectators.Beyond the tangible benefits, aesthetic education instills a profound respect for the art form inherent in physical activities. Students gain an understanding of the historical and cultural significance of various sports and movements, fostering a deeper appreciation for the rich tapestry of human achievement and expression. However, it is important to acknowledge that the successful integration of aesthetic education into physical education requires a delicate balance. While the artistic elements should be celebrated and nurtured, they should not overshadow the fundamental principles of physical fitness, health, and safety. A well-rounded approach that harmonizes both domains is essential to ensure a comprehensive and balanced development. In conclusion, the promoting effect of aesthetic education on physical education is undeniable. By infusing artistic sensibilities into physical activities, we not only enhance the overall experience but also foster a deeper connection between the mind, body, and soul. Aesthetic education encourages creativity, self-expression, and an appreciation for the inherent beauty in human movement. It elevates physical education from mere exercise to a profound artistic expression, allowing students to explore the boundless realms of physical and aesthetic mastery.篇3The Promotion of Sports by Aesthetic EducationAs a student, I have always been passionate about both academics and athletics. However, it wasn't until I took anaesthetic education class that I truly appreciated the profound connection between the arts and sports. Aesthetic education, which focuses on developing an appreciation for beauty and creativity, may seem unrelated to physical activities like sports. Yet, upon closer examination, it becomes clear that the principles of aesthetic education can greatly enhance one's athletic performance and overall enjoyment of sports. At the core of aesthetic education lies the idea of cultivating a keen sense of observation and appreciation for the intrinsic beauty present in various forms of expression. In the realm of sports, this translates to a heightened awareness of the graceful movements, rhythmic patterns, and artistic elements inherent in athletic endeavors. A trained aesthetic eye can discern the poetry in a perfectly executed gymnastics routine, the choreography in a synchronized swimming performance, or the fluid artistry of a figure skater gliding across the ice. Moreover, aesthetic education encourages individuals to view their surroundings from unique perspectives, challenging them to break free from conventional ways of thinking. This mindset can be incredibly beneficial for athletes, as it fosters creative problem-solving skills and promotes the exploration of innovative techniques and strategies. A basketball player whoapproaches the game with an aesthetic mindset might experiment with unconventional shooting forms or develop novel offensive plays, while a martial artist could draw inspiration from dance movements to enhance their fighting style.Another critical aspect of aesthetic education is the emphasis on self-expression and individuality. Athletes who embrace this principle are more likely to develop their own unique styles and signatures, allowing them to stand out from their peers. A runner with a strong aesthetic sensibility might adopt a distinctive stride or develop a signature celebration after a victorious race, while a soccer player could incorporate artistic flair into their dribbling techniques or goal celebrations.Furthermore, aesthetic education cultivates an appreciation for the beauty of teamwork and collaboration. Just as awell-choreographed dance or a harmonious musical performance requires seamless coordination among performers, team sports demand a similar level of synchronization and cohesion. By appreciating the aesthetic value of collective effort, athletes can develop a deeper understanding of the importance of communication, trust, and shared vision within a team setting.Beyond the physical realm, aesthetic education also plays a crucial role in shaping the mental and emotional aspects ofathletic pursuits. The ability to find beauty and meaning in the challenges and setbacks encountered during training and competition can foster resilience, determination, and a growth mindset. An athlete who approaches their sport with an aesthetic lens might find inspiration in the graceful recovery from a fall or the perseverance required to overcome injuries, ultimately fueling their motivation and commitment to their craft.Aesthetic education can also enhance the spectator experience of sports. By cultivating an appreciation for the artistry and beauty inherent in athletic performances, spectators can derive deeper enjoyment and appreciation from witnessing the incredible feats of strength, agility, and skill displayed by athletes. A football fan with an aesthetic sensibility might marvel at the choreography of a well-executed play or the graceful movements of a wide receiver making an acrobatic catch, transcending the mere appreciation of the game's scoreboard. In conclusion, the promotion of sports through aesthetic education is a powerful and often overlooked phenomenon. By fostering an appreciation for beauty, creativity, andself-expression, aesthetic education can elevate athletic pursuits to new heights, enhancing performance, strategy, individuality, teamwork, mental resilience, and spectator experience. As astudent, I have come to realize that the fusion of aesthetics and athletics is not merely a possibility but a necessity for unlocking the full potential of sports and embracing the true essence of human expression and achievement.。

从小培养孩子的创新精神英语作文

从小培养孩子的创新精神英语作文

从小培养孩子的创新精神英语作文Nurturing the Innovative Spirit: A Child's JourneyEver since I was a tiny tot, my mind has been buzzing with questions and ideas. Why is the sky blue? How do airplanes fly? Can I make a robot that cleans my room? My inquisitive nature often landed me in trouble, dismantling toys or mixing weird concoctions in the kitchen. But my parents always encouraged my curiosity, even when it made a mess.Looking back, I realize how fortunate I was to have grown up in an environment that valued imagination and creativity. Instead of squelching my inquisitive spark, my parents fanned the flames, allowing me to explore, experiment, and think outside the box. This nurturing approach has shaped who I am today – a young innovator always seeking new solutions. For kids like me, innovation isn't just a fancy word; it's a way of life. We see the world through a unique lens, constantly questioning the status quo and envisioning ways to make things better, more efficient, or just plain fun. From crafting intricate contraptions with LEGO bricks to sketching wild inventions on napkins, our minds are a whirlwind of originality. But cultivating an innovative spirit isn't something that happens overnight; it's a journey that begins in early childhood. Like a delicate seedling, a child's innate curiosity and creativity must be carefully tended and nourished to bloom into something extraordinary. One of the most crucial steps in this process is encouraging kids to ask questions – lots of them. Too often, children are shushed or dismissed when they bombard adults with their never-ending "whys" and "hows." However, these inquisitive moments are golden opportunities for learning and discovery. By patiently answering our questions and engaging us in thoughtful discussions, adults can foster our natural thirst for knowledge and help us develop critical thinking skills.Another vital ingredient in nurturing innovation is providing ample opportunities for hands-on exploration and experimentation. From tinkering with simple machines to coding basic computer programs, these interactive experiences allow us to put our ideas into practice and learn through trial and error. The freedom to get our hands dirty, make mistakes, and try again is invaluable in building resilience and problem-solving abilities –essential traits for any aspiring innovator. But innovation isn't just about science and technology; it permeates every aspect of our lives. Encouraging creativity in various forms, such as art, music, and storytelling, can open new pathways for self-expression and out-of-the-box thinking. By embracing diverse perspectives and celebrating unique ideas, we learn to approach challenges from multiple angles, increasing our chances of finding innovative solutions.Parents and educators play a pivotal role in this journey, but they can't do it alone. It takes a village to raise an innovator. Community centers, museums, and after-school programs that offer hands-on activities, maker spaces, and opportunities for collaborative learning can be invaluable resources. These environments not only nurture our curiosity but also teach us the value of teamwork, communication, and perseverance – skills that are essential for bringing innovative ideas to life.As a young innovator, I've learned that failure is not something to fear but rather an opportunity to grow and learn. Every unsuccessful experiment or abandoned project is a stepping stone towards greater understanding and better solutions. By embracing failure as a natural part of the innovation process, we develop the resilience and determination to keep pushing forward, even in the face of setbacks. But innovation isn't just about creating the next big thing;it's also about using our creativity to solve real-world problems, both big and small. From designing eco-friendly products to developing technologies that improve people's lives, the potential for innovative thinking to make a positive impact is boundless. As I look towards the future, I'm filled with excitement and determination. The world is full of challenges waiting to be tackled, and I can't wait to be part of the generation that finds innovative solutions. With the right guidance and support, I believe that every child has the potential to become an innovator, using their unique perspectives and talents to shape a better tomorrow. So, let's embrace the spirit of innovation from the earliest ages. Let's nurture our children's curiosity, encourage their creativity, and provide them with the tools and opportunities to explore, experiment, and dream big. Because who knows? The next groundbreaking invention or world-changing idea could be brewing in the mind of a child right now, just waiting to be unleashed upon the world.。

难忘的实验英语作文Title: An Unforgettable ExperimentIn the realm of education, where practical experience often trumps theoretical knowledge, one particular experiment has etched itself into the depths of my memory. It wasn't just an ordinary school exercise; it was a journey of discovery that ignited my passion for science and taught me valuable lessons about teamwork and perseverance. The experiment was a simple one, designed to demonstrate the principles of electrolysis. Our task was to split water into its constituent gases, hydrogen and oxygen, using nothing but a battery, some wires, and two test tubes filled with water and a tiny amount of baking soda to conduct the current. The setup was straightforward, but the implications were profound –we were about to witness chemistry in action. As we began connecting the wires and attaching them to the electrodes, a sense of anticipation filled the air. The lab came alive with the soft buzz of excitement as each group aligned their apparatus. My group, consisting of three classmates, worked with precision, each of us contributing our unique skills –one carefully measuring the baking soda, another ensuring the electrodes were correctly positioned, and I was responsible for documenting every step. The moment we switched on the battery, the water in the test tubes began to bubble, a visible sign of the reaction taking place. We held our breaths as tiny bubbles of gas started to rise from the negative terminal, collecting at the top of the tube. These were the hydrogen gas bubbles, while the oxygen gas was being collected at the other end. The simplicity of the experiment belied its significance –we were literally watching atoms split and recombine, a process that powers our planet. The excitement reached its crescendo when it was time to test the gases. With bated breath, we lit a splinter and brought it close to the collected gas at the positive terminal. The resulting pop and whoosh of flame made our hearts leap –it was the oxygen gas reacting exothermically with the burning splinter. Meanwhile, the hydrogen gas at the other end proved its presence when my partner cautiously brought it near a lighted candle, and it ignited with a faint pop, leaving behind a bead of water on the test tube's wall. This experiment was more than just a successful demonstration of electrolysis; it was a defining moment in ourscientific journey. It taught us that teamwork could turn seemingly mundane tasks into milestones of discovery. Each member's contribution was crucial, from the careful measurement of ingredients to the accurate documentation of results. It also underscored the importance of attention to detail –a slight misalignment of the electrodes or a careless measurement could have altered the outcome. Moreover, this experiment ignited a curiosity within us, a thirst for knowledge that extended beyond the classroom. In the following days, we found ourselves discussing possible variations of the experiment, wondering what would happen if we changed the concentration of baking soda or the voltage of the battery. The experiment had transformed from a mere academic requirement into a gateway to exploration and innovation. As I reflect on that unforgettable experiment, I realize that its impact went far beyond the confines of the laboratory. It nurtured a spirit of inquiry and fostered a collaborative mindset. It reminded us that science is not just about memorizing formulas and theories but about experiencing the wonder of discovery. The electrolysis experiment will remain etched in my memory, not just as an educational activity, butas a catalyst for learning and growth.。

Collaborative Experiment and Education based on Networked Virtual RealityPhamSy Quy, Jun Lee, JungHo Kim, Jee-In Kim* Department of Advanced Technology FusionKonkuk UniversitySeoul, Korea{quyps, junlee, jnkm}@konkuk.ac.krHyungSeock Kim Department of Internet and MultimediaKonkuk UniversitySeoul, Koreahyuskim@konkuk.ac.krAbstract— A collaborative education system using networked virtual reality (VR) overcomes differences of time and space between its teachers and students. The system can give cyber experiences in a virtual environment to students. We propose a collaboration system for experiment and education in biology. The proposed system uses a social computing based VR system called SecondLife. Students can learn basic theories and experiments of biology by watching movies and manipulating molecular models in SecondLife. They can also learn experimental details and precise simulations through remote collaborative virtual reality workspaces. Teachers can discuss with their students in SecondLife and evaluate scores of their students through remote collaborative work spaces. The proposed system offers both teaching and learning experiencesin cyberspace.Keywords-component; Networked Virtual Reality, Collaborative Experiment, Remote Education, SecondLife.I.I NTRODUCTIONA Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW) allows collaborations among geographically separated users using computers and their networks [1, 2]. A collaborative virtual reality (VR) environment can be utilized as a part of CSCW and widely used in various areas such as Computer Aided Design and Biological Simulations, because it can provide distributed participants with various experiences in cyberspace [3, 4].Recently, various researches showed various ways to utilize collaborative virtual reality environments for educational or training purposes. Redfern et al. [5] showed a collaborative education system in which professional researchers monitor behaviors of novice students and give comments or show some demonstrations to the students using collaborative VR. Sadasivan et al. [6] proposed a different research system where novice users can learn their works and train themselves while watching professional user’s recorded data. We noticed that social network services based on VR such as SecondLife [7] and some online games could be applicable to educate more population through the Internet.Molecular modeling, which is a part of biological researches, is the science of molecular structures such as viruses and proteins. We can simulate the behaviors of molecules with equations of quantum and classical physics. With three dimensional (3D) structures of molecules, computer simulations can calculate their behaviors. It can be*Corresponding Author : jnkm@konkuk.ac.kr applied to develop new materials, new drugs, and so on. Many software tools for molecular modeling are available not only in the public domain but also in the commercial field [8, 9]. However, it is difficult for novice users to understand whole simulation procedures and experiments. In this paper, we propose a collaborative education system using SecondLife. Its main educational subject is molecular modeling based on biological simulations. The proposed system provides 3D molecular models for molecular modeling and simulation to help users understand principles of molecular modeling more easily and intuitively. The participants, who are attending education and experiment, can chat or work together using their own avatars. Also, they can learn molecular modeling procedures by following demonstrations of their teachers and more skilled users. The proposed system provides role-based collaboration by performing different actions with different roles between students and teachers. The proposed system offers educational resources for students and monitoring methods for teachers to monitor behaviors of their students, feedback and evaluate scores of their students. In the next section, we present related works on collaborative VR for education. In Section III, an overview of the proposed system and methods are presented. We will introduce our methods of education using the proposed system in Section IV. We conducted some experiments and developed scenarios of using the system. They are discussed in Section V. Our concluding remarks are described in Section VI.II.R ELATED W ORKSThere have been several researches on collaborative VR environments for education and training. Leung et al. [10] showed a tele-conference and education system which extended the net meeting concept to CSCW. Also, Computer Aided Design (CAD) is another good application area to utilize collaborative VR. Kan et al. [11] proposed a collaborative VR CAD system for distributed engineers. Dan et al. [12] and Brahim et al. [13] suggested a collaborative training system for medical surgery using a haptic interface.SecondLife is an Internet-based 3D virtual world and developed by Linden Lab in 2003. Its users are called ‘Residents’. They can explore, meet other Residents, socialize, participate in individual and group activities, and create and trade items called ‘virtual property’. They can enjoy many social services such as e-learning, e-marketing and so on. Their own avatars represent themselves in2009 Fourth International Conference on Computer Sciences and Convergence Information TechnologySecondLife. The virtual world becomes more interesting, when it is equipped with a real-time collaborative workspace. Since users can chat and cooperate with others through their avatars, they can process their works in the intuitive immersive environment. Therefore, we can expect a great improvement on their performance of their works.Figure 1. Examples of education using SecondLife; (A) Combining an off-line class and an on-line class using SecondLife, (B) A museum for studying theories of eclipse, (C) Example of combining a lecture management system on the web and a VR class in SecondLife. [14, 15, 16].Chang[14] combined his real class with SeconLife and Paul et al.[15] proposed a scientific learning system where users can study basic phenomena of a solar eclipse from an interactive cyber museum in SecondLife. Also, Kemp et al.[16] suggested a learning management system which utilized web sites as its secondary sources for lectures. These researches focused on creating contents and developing interactions in SecondLife. As a matter of course, the Internet is an excellent tool for collaboration among biological researchers. They can share experimental results, references, documents, and so on [17]. BioCore [18], which was suggested by Bhandarkar, supports cooperative works for molecular modeling through the Internet. It performs molecular energy simulation, real-time monitoring, communication among participants and document management. BioCore can also combined with existing software tools such as VMD [19] (a visualization tool) and NAMD [20] (a computational system).BioCore uses VMD as its visualization component. Its users complain that the rendering speed becomes slow if they use general PC class computers and notebooks. This means that real-time collaboration using BioCore through the Internet does not seem to be highly active if its participant uses general PC class computing devices. In our previous papers [21, 22], Collaborative VR Environment (CVRE) was suggested to improve rendering speed of generating precise 3D images for the remote users. An adaptive level of detail (LOD) technique was employed. It can be executed on general PC class computers and notebooks without serious degradation of its performance. In this paper, we propose a collaborative education system in SecondLife in order to train students to utilize CVRE for molecular modeling.III.S YSTEM O VERVIEWFigure 2. Overview of the proposed system. The proposed environment can be overviewed as shownin Figure 2. First, all participants have roles ‘Teacher’ or ‘Students’. They participate in education according to their corresponding roles. A teacher registers educational contentsto Portal Server ((1) in Figure 2). The educational contents may consist of presentations, movies and simulation files. The contents are delivered to users through SecondLife ((2)in Figure 2) or Collaborative VR Education Server ((4) in Figure 2). After the registration, students learn the educational contents from their teachers. They can exercise collaborative molecular modeling experiments through Portal Server ((3) in Figure 2) or Second Life ((2) in Figure 2). Teachers can monitor their students and provide proper feedbacks to teach. They may give comments through chatting and demonstrate how to exercise experiments through actions of their corresponding avatars.A.Collaborative VR Education ServerCollaborative VR Education Server provides synchronous (or real-time) collaboration between teachers and students. Students can manipulate one 3D molecular model at a time to avoid conflicts between other students. Collaborative VR Education Server provides a pessimistic concurrency control mechanism for a floor control, which manages an access control of 3D molecular model [23]. When a student wants to manipulate a molecular model, he can request access of the model to the server. Then, the server checks if current owner of the model exists. It determines whether the access control can be allowed to the requested user. After the grant, the server broadcasts changed3D information of the model, such as position and orientation, to other participants.Figure 3. Collaborative VR Education Server.B. Role-Based Collaborative EducationThe participants may be either teacher or student. First, a student wants to study basic theories about molecular modeling and practice molecular simulations. After training, the student can participate in a collaborative experiment and manipulate 3D molecular models using CVRE. While students are exercising simulations, they communicate and give comments to each other. Second, a teacher can create educational contents in SecondLife to teach molecular modeling experiments. The teachers can have all rights of access control to 3D molecular models during collaboration. They can monitor behaviors of students and give proper comments. They can also participate in various student groups to guide and evaluate their performances. Virtual Laboratory in SecondLife. The educational contents and modules were developed by Linden Script Language [24]. The learning procedure with the educational contents consists of the following steps. (1) Teachers create educational contents and register them to Portal Server. (2) Students can learn basic theories and the procedure of molecular modeling by watching movies as shown in Figure 5. Also, students may repeat basic theories and movie training. (3) After learning basic theories and watching movies, students exercise molecular modeling simulations with 3D models in SecondLife as shown in Figure 6. This includes watching animation of 3D models and manipulating 3D molecular models by rotating and translating the 3D molecular models in SecondLife.Figure 5. Education in SecondLife: (A) Virtual World (B) Movies.Figure 6. Exercising Molecular Modeling in SecondLife. V. R ESULTS OF THE COLLABORATIVE EDUCATIONMolecular modeling aims to find a candidate molecule (aligand) which can be combined with a target molecule (areceptor) at a specific position called an active site.1 Studentslearn the following basic theories:1In biochemistry, a receptor is a protein on the cell membrane or within the cytoplasm or cell nucleus that binds to a specific molecule (a ligand), such as a neurotransmitter, hormone, or other substance, and initiates the cellular response to the ligand. Ligand-induced changes in the behavior of receptor proteins result in physiological changes that constitute the biological actions of the ligands.(/wiki/Receptor_(biochemistry)Lemma 1. When two molecules are combined at an active site, the geometry information of two molecules is appeared complementarily [27].Lemma 2. An active site locates a special position where two molecules are combined and stabilized. It can be validated by calculating Energy Minimization Equation [28].The procedure of molecular modelling as shown in Figure 7 [20] is to manipulate two molecular models simultaneously to find out active sites (Lemma 1). It includes simulations of calculating Energy Minimization Equations (Lemma 2).Figure 7. (A) An AIDS virus model and a new drug model are not combined yet. (B) After the combination of the models at the active site.A.CollaborationTABLE III. A VERAGE PROCESSING TIMES.Users Average processing time1 Student 336 Sec2 Students 271 Sec2 Students +Comments froma Teacher115 SecWe conducted an experiment where collaborative works were performed by a teacher and two students. The students manipulated molecular models while referring basic theories and processes from movies. The teacher gave comments while monitoring the students performing experiments. Their average time to find active sites by combing a ligand and a receptor were measured. The time-stamp was used in computing the processing times. As presented in Table III, the collaborative works among three users (two students and a teacher) showed better performance than those of a single student and those of two students.B.Simulation TrainingThe proposed system provides students with a tool of training molecular modeling in SecondLife. Students can take one of several training courses such as molecular docking process for molecular modeling, editing molecular model for crystallography, and so on. 3D molecular models can be converted from PDB Bank [30] to the obj file format [31] which can be visualized in SecondLife. The students can practice to exercise manipulation of 3D molecular models, editing 3D molecular models, and so on through SecondLife.C.EvaluationAssume that there are four students and one teacher in a class. The students can be divided into two groups, A and B. The teacher gives his lectures, where he explains theories for 30 minutes, shows movies for 10 minutes and demonstrates simulations for 20 minutes. After the class, students may participate in the collaboration with their groups and the teacher. And the teacher monitors their works and evaluates their behaviors such as process of problem solving and attitudes of the students. He can give comments by monitoring his students in the virtual lab.Figure 8. Team education using SecondLife and CVRE.Figure 9. Team education for 2 teams and 1teacher.VI.C ONCLUDING R EMARKSIn this paper, we propose a collaborative education system based on networked VR. The proposed system is based on SecondLife and a software tool for molecular modeling called CVRE. SecondLife allows open, flexible accesses to the system and a cyber educational space for CVRE which provides with a VR environment for molecular modeling. Students can learn how to exercise molecular modeling using CVRE. Our experiments showed that collaboration with a teacher and students were effective. We will expand application areas of the VR education. First, we will focus on developing interfaces to communicate between SecondLife and other VR applications. Our VR educational space will cover various topics in areas of science and engineering. We also plan to develop a system development kit for the proposed system which enables other developers to apply the VR education system to their own application fields.A CKNOWLEDGMENTThis work was supported by the Seoul R&BD Program (10581).R EFERENCES[1]J .
