Reference answers1)•I think it is a good idea for them to make these life changes. Themeaning of life is to make life meaningful. Anita and Jasmin obviously felt bored with what they did every day, and couldn't find contentment, fulfillment and pleasure in their life, so it was the right time for them to make a change. They needed to try something different, something that can bring them new experience, give them a sense of achievement, and revive their passion for life. Even though they are in their 30s, it's never too late for them to pursue what they really want to do in their life. The pursuit of their dreams pushes them forward and inspires them to live life to the fullest.•I think it is too risky for them to make these life changes at such an age, especially for Anita Jacobs who sold her house and gave up her job just to go traveling. I just doubt whether she will be able to make a living when she finishes traveling. It's not unusual for many people to feel bored about doing the same job every day.But the point is that this job pays enough so that we can make a living, and we can have some money put away for retirement after paying the bills and putting food in our mouths. So when the going gets tough, just remember times when we have a peaceful life at home after an eight-hour day.2) A typical example is Bill Gates, the former chief executive ofMicrosoft, the world's largest personal-computer software company. Bill Gates enrolled at Harvard University in the fall of 1973, originally thinking of a career in law. He did well there, but he didn't find it interesting. He spent many long nights in front of the school's computer and the next day was asleep in class. When the MITS Altair 8800 based on the Intel 8080 CPU was released in 1974, he and his friend Paul Allen saw this as a great opportunity to start their own computer software company. So Bill Gates dropped out of Harvard to start a business to write software for computers. It was a hard decision but it turned out to be the right choice.Viewing1.Reference answers1)I think the qualities a successful Formula One driver must haveinclude physical strength and proficiency, mental alertness, quick reaction, endurance, consistency, courage, competitiveness, and appreciation for adventure and speed.2)Lewis Hamilton is ambitious and he always wants to win. Whatever they are, dreams give us a purpose in life and a meaning to live, and allow us to fight for what we believe in. However, we should not let our dreams control our life and become a slave to them. In fact there are other things we should work for apart from our own dreams, such as our family and our friends. So don't be afraid to let go our dreams if we have to.•The second quote tells us that we should always strive to attain our dreams in life. Dreams push us to move forward, to struggle, to strive all the time. Without dreams, life is a life without hope; without dreams, we are as lost as a bird which has lost the gift of flight. So follow our dreamsand let our ambition fuel us to surpass our limits. Never quit and always think of different ways to win.3.Further practice in listeningShort conversationsIB 2 B 3 C 4 D 5 DLong conversation1A 2 B 3 B 4 DPassage 11 B 2D 3 A 4 CPassage 21)commentators2)exaggerated3)focus on4)lead an active life5)laid the foundation6)annual7) a series8)advocating9)abolish10)influentialKey to U5Listening to the worldSharing•Reference answers: The podcast is mainly about whether people enjoy city life, the good things about living in a city and the main problems in cities.•1) cities 2) mix of people 3) peace and quiet•1). As I see it, some knowledge about marketing is essential for a salesman.A: Yes, you’re right. And I believe that this course will provide exactly what a salesman needs. Have you got any working experience in this field?B: Well, I worked as a part-time salesman during this summer holiday.A: I see. What do you expect to learn from this course?B: I’m not quite sure. Personally, I think I need to learn how to control such elements as product policy, channels of distribution, communication and pricing to satisfy the needs of customers in a profitable way.A: I see. And more importantly, when we are having the final exams, it will be over 30°C .B: But I think that it is unnecessary to spend so much money to buy an air conditioner just for two or three weeks, not to mention the electricity bill.A: For me the most important thing is not money, but to have a good rest during the examination time. I couldn’t sleep well without an air conditioner in hot weather.B: Anyhow, it’s perfectly OK for me to go without an air conditioner. And I’m afraid that the other two roommates don’t need an air conditioner either.A: I will talk to them later. 新视野大学英语(第三版)视听说2教程答案 Unit 5
Unit 5 Urban pulse5-2 SharingPractice①The podcast is mainly about whether people enjoy city life the good things about living in a city and the main problems in cities.② 1)cities 2)mix of people 3)peace and quiet③D-E-A-C-F-B④A-A-B-B-A⑤ 1)horribly 2)get round 3)on the go 4)take time out5)missing out 6)green transport 7)crime 8)committing crimes⑦1. I come from a small town in the mountain areas in the east of China. It has beautiful scenery and a pleasant climate neither too cold nor too hot. It is a quiet town with a pretty relaxing lifestyle. The residents there are kind friendly and helpful. I like the pleasant atmosphere of living in such a small town.2. Since my hometown is in the mountains and is far from big cities the bus service there is poor and infrequent. So it is inconvenient to go shopping especially when we want to buy large household items. It is also difficult for children to receive a good education locally. So many children have to live in boarding schools. A more serious problem is that it is inconvenient to go to hospital. When it is an emergency case it can be a matter of life and death.3. Generally speaking I like living in a big city. There is greater convenience diversity and choice living in a big city. There are a lot of things to see and do and I'll never feel bored. And there are also many opportunities for me in big cities. But more opportunities also mean more challenges. So I have to be quite competitive to survive in a big city.5-3 ListeningUse the skills①1. In my opinion the important criteria for a good city are safety affordable housing sound education and health care system pleasant climate and environment abundant leisure and cultural facilities good public services and convenient transportation.2. In my opinion Weihai is the best city for living in China. Located in the east of Shandong Province Weihai is surrounded by the Yellow Sea in the north east and south. Weihai is a coastal garden city with a pleasant climate clean air beautiful natural scenery blue sea soft sand clean and safe streets as well as small European style residential buildings. It is a modern up-to-date city that still maintains the charm and atmosphere of a small town.②1)shopping 2)good nightlife 3)safe 4)cheap 5)terrible6)restaurants 7)fantastic 8)fast 9)green 10)crowded 11)friendly 12)atmosphere 13)clean 14)safe 15)see16)do 17)beautiful 18)perfect 19)culture 20)too muchThink and speak1. I like Sydney mainly because of its beautiful harbor beaches and buildings. I also like its warm weather and café culture.2. The city I choose is Shanghai. I think the positive things about Shanghai include great employment options better education for children excellent health care excellent cultural and recreational facilities convenient public transportation and colorful nightlife. The negative things include high living expenses and great pressure.5-4 ViewingGet a clue1. The Zimmers are a British rock band. The band is very different from other rock groups in that it is the world's oldest rock band with the members' combined age exceeding 3000.2. They recorded a version of The Who's song "My Generation" in the famous Abbey Road Studios which earned them great popularity on YouTube and then got invited to appear on America's biggest chat show in Hollywood.View it1)a combined age 2)forgotten 3) stuck indoors 4) felt right 5) 16 times / sixteen times6) closure 7) meet 8) 40 9) available online 10)Two million / 2 millionThink and speak1. The Zimmers have completely changed these old people's lives. They used to feel lonely forgotten and cast aside by society. But The Zimmers offered them an excellent opportunity to make friends to come alive and most important of all to be heard again by society.2. The greatest problem that Chinese elderly people face is who will take care of them when they are in need of help and care. Now more and more Chinese families belong to the 4-2-1 type. This means one couple will take care of four old people. Actually now many young people have no time to take care of their parents at home. Some people complain that when they ask for leave to take care of their sick parents the company will later find it as an excuse to lay them off. So taking care of the old is no longer simply a moralissue and in many cases it is a social issue caused by many other practical problems in society.3. The new law requires the adult children of parents over 60 to visit their parents frequently and make sure that their parents' daily financial and spiritual needs are met. This law is issued in response to the increasing difficulty in caring for the aging population in China. I think the intention of the new law is good; however I think it will do little to change the status quo. First since some details of the law are vague I doubt the practicality and enforceability of it. For example according to the new law adult children are prohibited from overlooking or neglecting the elderly but it does not specify how much time adult children should spend with their elderly parents and how frequently adult children should visit their elderly parents. Also there is no clarification of the penalties for people who break the new law. So I think it is hard or even infeasible to enforce the law. Second I think the law will put too much pressure on those people who migrate away from home in search of work or independence especially those low-income migrant workers who work thousands of miles away from home and can't afford frequent visits to their parents. Third the new law stipulates that parents can sue their adult children for neglecting them and it is likely that such a law may end up causing more family conflicts and even resentment toward elderly parents. After all caring for the elderly is a question of ethics not something that should be governed by legislation. If legislation isn't the answer to the problem of caring for the elderly I think the establishment of more day-care centers for old people might help improve old people's lives in China. Adult children can arrange for their parents to attend day-care centers for the elderly where they will have the chance to interact with other people and engage in activities that may stimulate their social and cognitive skills. And adult children can also hire aides who can not only help older people perform daily tasks but also serve as companions for them as well.5-6 Role-playing①1) a hotel 2) The air conditioning 3) send someone up 4) a restaurant 5) 20 minutes6) the service charge 7) busy time 8) a train station 9) an hour10) wrong type of snow②A-A-B-B-A-B5-7 PresentingOrganize ideasstep 1:Cities Pros ConsA • High household income(Rank: 3)• Low crime rate (Rank: 5)• Good public transportation(Rank: 2)• Good cultural atmosphere(Rank: 3)• High average house price (Rank: 2)• High unemployment rate (Rank: 2)• Fewer doctors per 1000 people (Rank:5)• Poor air quality (Rank: 1)B • Reasonable average ho useprice (Rank: 3)• Comparatively lower crimerate (Rank:3)• Good public transportation(Rank: 1)• Good cultural atmosphere(Rank: 2)• Low household income (Rank: 5)• High unemployment rate (Rank: 1)• Fewer doctors per 1000 people (Rank:4)• Poor air quality (Rank: 2)C • Reasonable populationgrowth rate (Rank: 4)• Good air quality (Rank: 5)• Pretty good publicransportation (Rank: 4)• Good cultural atmosphere(Rank: 1)• Relatively lower household income(Rank: 4)• High average house price (Rank: 1)• Higher unemployment rate (Rank: 3)• Higher crime rate (Rank:2)• Fewer doctors per 1000 people (Rank:3)D • High household income(Rank: 1)• Lower average house price(Rank: 4)• Lower unemployment rate(Rank: 4)• Lower crime rate (Rank:4)• More doctors per 1000 people(Rank: 1)• Good air quality (Rank: 4)• Pretty good publictransportation (Rank: 3)• Higher population growth rate (maycreate problems) (Rank: 2)• Relatively poor cultural atmosphere(Rank: 4)E • High househo ld income(Rank: 2)• High crime rate (Rank:1)• Fewer doctors per 1000 people (Rank:• Lower average house price (Rank: 5)• Low unemployment rate (Rank: 5)• Less rain (Rank 5)• Good air quality (Rank: 3)2)• Higher population growth rate (may create problems) (Rank: 1)• Poorer public transportation (Rank: 5)• Poorer cultural atmosphere (Rank: 5)step 3:Reference:The city I recommend is D.Reasons for my recommendation• high household income;• low living expenses (lower house prices);• better employment opportunities (lower unemployment rate);• better security (lower crime rate);• better health care (more doctors per 1000 people);• good air quality (lower PM2.5);• pretty good public transportation (higher percentage of the workforce utilizi ng public transport).step 4:Sample presentation will be given in the "Present ideas" section. Present ideasThe city our group recommends is D.We think one of the most important things for a city to be a good place for living is the balance between income levels and costs of living. The average household income in D is $100000 which tops the list of the five cities in the table while its average house price an important index of living cost is $340000 which only ranks fourth in the list. High income and low living costs make D stand out from the rest of the candidate cities.Another factor which allows D to distinguish itself from other candidate cities is the health care its dwellers enjoy. D offers 6.5 doctors per 1000 people which is the highest of the five cities. The relatively low unemployment rate and low crime rate also make D very attractive to potential immigrants. Its high income and low living costs may contribute to its low unemployment rate and low crime rate.D also offers good and convenient public transportation which can be easily seen from the fact that 21.2% of the workforce use public transport. This figure partly explains why D is not as seriously polluted as some big cities like London or New York. The climate in D may not be as pleasant as that of some European cities. It is cold and humid. D's winter is cold and snowy but surprisingly appealing. With an average of 153 days below 0°C D is an ideal place for skiing and ice-skating.To sum up D has all the offerings of a large city but has managed to maintain the accessibility atmosphere and charm of a mid-sized friendly town with a strong sense of community. So choose D you won't regret.5-8 More practice in listeningConversations①A-A-B-A-D②A-A-D-BPassages①B-D-C-D②1)join up 2)reaction 3)makes increasing sense 4)sustainable5)aims6)monitored 7)access to 8)experimenting with 9)eye-catching 10)commutingNews①D-B②B-C-A5-10 Unit test1)B 2)C 3)D 4)A 5)B 6)B 7)C 8)D 9)A 10)C11)D 12)C 13)B 14)D 15)D16) widespread 17) property 18) permeates 19) robbed20) victim21) argue about 22) contribute to 23) population 24) remains unsolved 25) proposed。

Reference answers1)• I think it is a good idea for them to make these life changes. The meaning of life is to make life meaningful. Anita and Jasmin obviously felt bored with what they did every day, and couldn't find contentment, fulfillment and pleasure in their life, so it was the right time for them to make a change. They needed to try something different, something that can bring them new experience, give thema sense of achievement, and revive their passion for life. Eventhough they are in their 30s, it's never too late for them to pursue what they really want to do in their life. The pursuit of theirdreams pushes them forward and inspires them to live life to the fullest.• I think it is too risky for them to make these life changes at such an age, especially for Anita Jacobs who sold her house and gave up her job just to go traveling. I just doubt whether she will be able to make a living when she finishes traveling. It's not unusual for many people to feel bored about doing the same job every day.But the point is that this job pays enough so that we can make a living, and we can have some money put away for retirement after paying the bills and putting food in our mouths. So when the going gets tough, just remember times when we have a peaceful life at home after an eight-hour day.2) A typical example is Bill Gates, the former chief executive ofMicrosoft, the world's largest personal-computer software company.Bill Gates enrolled at Harvard University in the fall of 1973, originally thinking of a career in law. It was a hard decision but it turned out to be the right choice. So follow our dreams and let our ambition fuel us to surpass our limits. A: Well, marketing is one of the required courses for studentsin our school. Why do you want to take this courseB: I’m going to graduate from university next year, and I would like to try to get a job as a salesman. As I see it, some knowledge about marketing is essential for a salesman.A: Yes, you’re right. And I believe that this course will provide exactly what a salesman needs. Have you got any workingexperience in this fieldB: Well, I worked as a part-time salesman during this summer holiday.A: I see. What do you expect to learn from this courseB: I’m not quite sure. Personally, I think I need to learn how to control such elements as product policy, channels of distribution, communication and pricing to satisfy the needs of customers in a profitable way.A: I see. Then I’m sure this course will offer what you need. In addition, this course will demonstrate the role of marketing in the company, and explore the relationship of marketing to other functions.B: I’m convinced that this course is exactly what I need. Could I ask some questions about the courseA: Go ahead, please.B: How often do we meet for classesA: Once a week.B: Do I have any other opportunities to meet my tutor apart from during classA: Yes. When it is getting really hot, we will be at home to spend the summer holidays.A: But there is still one month before we go home. And more importantly, when we are having the final exams, it will be over 30°C .B: But I think that it is unnecessary to spend so much money to buy an air conditioner just for two or three weeks, not to mention the electricity bill.A: For me the most important thing is not money, but to have a good rest during the e xamination time. I couldn’t sleep well without an air conditioner in hot weather.B: Anyhow, it’s perfectly OK for me to go without an air conditioner. And I’m afraid that the other two roommates don’t need an air conditioner either.A: I will talk to the m later. One thing I’d like to say is that it is still very hot in September and October in this city. I believe that you’ll find that an air conditioner is essential at the beginning of next semester.Group discussionGet ideas1.1 )She heard about Second Life on BBC breakfast TV.2) She didn’t change her appearance very much except her hair color.3) She decided to be a businesswoman in Second Life.4) Her personality is the one thing that hasn’t changed.5) It’s a shop. I think traveling by train is more comfortable than flying. And I don’t like flying. M: I put “plane” because flying is faster than going by train.W: Not always! OK, next question. Where do you like to stay: in a hotel or a self-catering apartment?M: In an apartment. And you?W: Hmm, in a hotel.M: Oh. But a hotel is more expensive than an apartment!W: Yeah, but it’s more comfortable. Hmm … nex t question. What do you prefer to do: go sightseeing or relax on a beach?M: Oh, that’s easy! I hate beach holidays! Boring!W: OK –there’s one we answered the same. So we agree about that.M: Yeah, sightseeing’s definitely more interesting!W: Right. When do you like to go: in spring or summer?M: Er … in spring –I don’t really like hot weather. Tourist places are more crowded in summer. W: True. But the weather’s better. Summer is hotter than spring. I love hot weather.M: Well, we don’t agree there. Anyway, next question. What do you like to eat: local dishes or the food you usually eat?W: Local dishes, I think. You?M: Definitely! That’s two answers the same!W: Hmm, interesting. Next … what do you like to do in the evening? Go to a club or go to a restaurant?M: Well, go to a restaurant.W: Oh, good. Me, too. It’s much quieter than a club.M: Yes, I agree. Restaurants are quieter … hmm, more relaxing.W: And the last question … how long is your perfe ct holiday?M: Er, three months.W: You can’t have three months! The answer is either a week or a month.M: OK, a month then.W: Me, too!M: So we’ve got four answers the same!W: Maybe we can travel together …ViewingScriptsN = Nicki; W = Woman; M = Man; J = Juan; F = Juan’s fatherN: And finally, the country that I’m in: Argentina. The 20-lane Avenue 9th July is the widest street on the planet and if you need to know where you are in the city, it’s an easy referen ce point as it cuts through the metropolis from north to south. La Boca, the port where the first Spaniards landed, is one of the poorest regions in the city. The people of La Boca share one of Argentina’s greatest passions: football. From its slums have come some of the greatest players and its most famous team. La Boca is where Diego Maradona, one of football’s leading legends, began his career. So why is football so important toArgentinians?W: Because we are a very passionate country. We are Latins.M: In every way, we have passion, for football, for music. We are also famous for the tango. People started dancing the tango in the 1800s.N: It’s a dance full of passion and emotion.N: I’ve been riding on and off since I was eight or nine and I love horses and I’ve never played polo before and apparently Argentina is the place to learn. Morning, Juan. Morning, Gada. First lesson: getting on the horse.J: Come on, Nicki. You can do it!N: I can do it. I’ve got to do one, haven’t I? H ere we go!J: Ola, Nicki!N: Yes! That was one! One out of a hundred! The British originally came to Argentina for meat. Today, Argentina is still famous for its beef. It’s considered the best beef in the world. Big meat-eaters over here, aren’t yo u?J: Yeah. I think the, the average (consumption) of meat per person in Argentina per year is like 80 kilos in one year.N: That’s a lot!J: The average. So, that’s … it’s a lot.N: You can’t be a vegetarian, can you, with all this fantast ic meat?F: If you want, we have very good vegetables here!N: Very social, isn’t it?F: As you say, with family and friends, good table, good wine, you share wonderful moments. Never less than two, three hours.N: That’s it from Argentina and Holiday 10 Best. Join us next time. Goodbye!Speaking for communicationRole-playScriptsWa = Waiter; M = Man; W = WomanWa: Good evening. Could I have an orange juice?M: And I’d like a cola, please. And can we have a bottle of mineral water?Wa: Certainly. Er … the menu …M: Thank you.Wa: Tonight’s special is Chicken à la Chef de Saint Germaine de Paris Rive Gauche. W: What’s that?Wa: It’s grilled chicken with potatoes and green beans.W: Is it French?Wa: Er … not really …W: But it has a French name.Wa: Well, that’s true … It’s very good … Are you ready to order?M: Yes, I’d like some soup and the special.W: The same for me, please.Wa: Thank you.Group discussionScriptsM = Man; W = WomanM: We want to talk about Rimini, an old city on the Adriatic coast in Italy. It’s got a beautiful beach and you can swim in the sea in the summer. One of the most important places in Rimini is the cathedral, and also the Arch of Augustus.W: Ah, but for me the most important place is the beach.M: Yes, for me, too. And at night, the bars on the beach … You can go dancing –it’s really good fun …W: And what about the food? Well, a typical food from Rimini is puntarelle or pasta with fresh vegetables, but the fish is really amazing. The city is by the sea so the fish is very fresh.M: So, we think Rimini is a beautiful, relaxing place. You can sit on the beach all day, eat great food and dance all night.Further practice in listeningShort conversationScriptsConversation 1W: Friday is a public holiday. Shall we go and spend the long weekend on the farm? We could leave on Thursday night.M: I’d rather go on Friday. My best friend from New York is coming here for a business conference and I have invited him to dinner on Thursday.Q: Why can’t the man leave on Thursday?Conversation 2M: Have they finished discussing their vacation plans? Have they reached an agreement?W: They only seem to have agreed to set another date for further discussion. They will wait and see.Q: What is the result of the discussion?Conversation 3W: I’m so happy that I have bought some Christmas gifts in less than half a day. And I worked for two months making my rabbit costume! Plus Jason’s party last year was completely boring. Completely!! Four hours of boring. Boring.Boring.M: It wasn’t all that bad, young lady. This year, some shoppers, however, stayed up late onThanksgiving night. This change in behavior was in large part due to the efforts of different storesto beat each otherduring the traditional start to the holiday shopping season. Some popular storesfor the first time opened at midnight on Thanksgiving night to offer deals that once were reservedfor the next day. It was reported that 24 percent of Black Friday shoppers were at stores atmidnight. That’s up from 9.5 percent the year before when only a few stores were open during thattime. But those hours mostly attracted the younger people. Of those shopping at midnight on Black Friday, 37 percent were aged 18 to 34. Older shoppers weren’t as quick to run to the stores. Only 23.5 percent of 35- to 54-year-olds were in stores by midnight. One department store, for example, attracted 10,000 people to its midnight opening and many of them were young people who turned out for the gift sets and discounted fashion items.Jenny, 15 years old, went out with her fourcousins to one big department store at midnight and then shoppedat another one until 2:30 a.m.Then, she and her cousins went home to bed. “It’s always been inconvenient,” Jenny says of thetraditional 4 a.m. Black Friday openings of years past. “No one likes to wake up that early.”Q1: What is special about this year’s Black Friday shopping?Q2: Why did some stores open at midnight on Thanksgiving night?Q3: How many Black Friday shoppers were reported to go to the shops at midnight this year?
