2、The little crows of mourners – all me and boys, no women – threaded their way across the marker place between the piles of pomegranates and the taxis and the camels, wailing a short chant over and over again. What really appeals to the flied is that the corpses here are never put into coffins; they are merely wrapped in a piece of ray and carried on a rough wooden bier on the shoulders of four friends. When the friends get to the burying-ground they hack an oblong hole afoot or two deep, dump the body in it and fling over it a little of the dried-up, lumpy earth, which is like broken brick. No gravestone, no name, no identifying mark of any kind. The burying-ground is merely a huge waste of hummocky earth. Like a derelict building-lot. After a month or two no one can even be certain where his own relatives are buried.

Bad bosses often have a recognizable modus operandi! Harry Levinson, an American management psychologist, had catalogued problem bosses, from the bully to the indecisive jellyfish to the disapproving perfectionist. If you’re suffering from a bad boss, chances are he or she combines several of these traits and can be dealt with effectively if you use the right strategy.
The Bully. DURING his first week on the job, a new account manager at a small advertising agency agreed to return some materials to a client. When he mentioned this at a staff meeting, the boss turned beet red, his lips began to quiver and he shouted that the new employee should call his client and confess he didn’t know anything about the advertising business, and would not be returning the materials.

Unit 8 Section A Animals or children?—A scientist's choice动物还是孩子?——一位科学家的选择1 I am the enemy! I am one of those cursed, cruel physician scientists involved in animal research. These rumors sting, for I have never thought of myself as an evil person. I became a children's doctor because of my love for children and my supreme desire to keep them healthy. During medical school and residency, I saw many children die of cancer and bloodshed from injury —circumstances against which medicine has made great progress but still has a long way to go. More importantly, I also saw children healthy thanks to advances in medical science such as infant breathing support, powerful new medicines and surgical techniques and the entire field of organ transplantation. My desire to tip the scales in favor of healthy, happy children drew me to medical research.1 我就是那个敌人!
(Natiortal Foundation for lnfantile Para1ysis,U.S.A。) 参考文献[1] Pauling,L.,and Corey,R.B.,Nature,171,346 (1953).Proc.U.S.Nat.Acdd.Sci.,39,84 (1953).[2] Furberg,S.,Acta.Chem Scand,6,634 (1952)。[3]Chargaff,E., for references see Zamenhof,S.,Brawerman,G.,and Chargaff,E.,Biochim。 Biophys, Acta,9,402 (1952)。[4]Wyatt,G.R.,J.Gen.Physiol,36,201(1952)。[5]〕Astbury,W.T.,Symp.
The difficult experiment I conducted was related to the field of chemistry. I was tasked with synthesizing a new compound that had the potential to be used as a catalyst in a chemical reaction. The experiment required precise measurements and careful manipulation of chemicals. To begin with, I had to gather all the necessary reagents and equipment. This involved measuring outspecific amounts of various chemicals and setting up the necessary apparatus. It was crucial to ensure that everything was clean and free from contamination.Once everything was set up, I began the process of synthesizing the compound. This involved mixing different chemicals together and heating the mixture to a specific temperature. I had to closely monitor the reaction and make adjustments as needed. The most challenging part of the experiment was the purification process. After the compound was synthesized, it was necessary to separate it from any impurities. This involved techniques such as filtration, distillation, and recrystallization. It required a lot of patience and precision to obtain a pure sample of the compound.Throughout the experiment, I encountered several obstacles. There were times when the reaction did not proceed as expected, or the yield of the compound was low.I had to troubleshoot and make changes to the experimental conditions to improve the results.Overall, this experiment was a challenging but rewarding experience. It required a combination of theoretical knowledge and practical skills. It taught me the importance of attention to detail and perseverance in scientific research.

As we drove off, Arcadia with its dirt streets and free-roaming cattle, its barns and outhouses, looked like a metropolis.

Unit 2 Onwards and upwards
Let’s keep to the point! 啊!1.On the first day, I should want to see the people whose kindness and gentleness andcompanionship have made my life worth living.(P20)“第几天”的表达,要用序数词,序数词前的the不能丢!
练习:(改错, 1 处) On the four day, I went to the countryside with my parents.(改错,2处) In the summer holiday following my eighteen birthday, I took driving lessons. I still remember how hard first day was. (2017年全国卷)2.I can only see through my fingertips the outline of a face. I should like to see the books whichhave been read to me, and which have revealed to me the deepest channels of human life and the human spirit. I should want to see…, I should like to see…, I should do…。

Passage 5 (Unit 5, Book II: A Mother’s Place.Parents)Mother Rigby could do anything. She was a witch, a woman with strange powers. She could make water run uphill, or change a beautiful woman into a white horse. Many nights when the moon was full and bright, she could be seen flying over the tops of the houses in the village, sitting on a long wooden stick. It is a broomstick, and it helped her to do all sorts of strange tricks.Mother Rigby ate a quick breakfast and then started to work on her broomstick. She was planning to make something that would look like a man. It would fill the birds with fear, and scare them from eating her corn, the way most farmers protect themselves from those black, pesky birds.Mother Rigby worked quickly. She held her magic broomstick straight, and then tied another piece of wood across it. And already, it began to look like a man with arms. Then she made the head. She put a pumpkin, a vegetable the size of a football, on top of the broomstick. She made two small holes in the pumpkin for eyes, and made another cut lower down that looked just like a mouth. At last, there he was. He seemed ready to go to work for Mother Rigby and stop those old birds from eating her corn. But, Mother Rigby was not happy with what she made. She wanted to make her scarecrow look better and better, for she was a good worker. She made a purple coat and put it around her scarecrow, and dressed it in white silk stockings. She covered him with false hair and an old hat. And in that hat, she stuck the feather of a bird. She examined him closely, and decided she liked him much better now, dressed up in a beautiful coat, with a fine feather on top of his hat. And, she named him Feathertop. She looked at Feathertop and laughed with happiness. He is a beauty, she thought. "Now what?" she thought, feeling troubled again. She felt that Feathertop looked too good to be a scarecrow. "He can do something better," she thought, "than just stand near the corn all summer and scare the crows." And she decided on another plan for Feathertop. She took the pipe of tobacco she was smoking and put it into the mouth of Feathertop. "Puff, darling, puff," she said to Feathertop. "Puff away, my fine fellow. It is your life." Smoke started to rise from Feathertop's mouth. At first, it was just a little smoke, but Feathertop worked hard, blowing and puffing. And, more and more smoke came out of him."Puff away, my pet," Mother Rigby said, with happiness. "Puff away, my pretty one. Puff for your life, I tell you." Mother Rigby then ordered Feathertop to walk. "Go forward," she said. "You have a world before you."Feathertop put one hand out in front of him, trying to find something for support. At the same time he pushed one foot forward with great difficulty. But Mother Rigby shouted and ordered him on, and soon he began to go forward. Then she said, "you look like a man, and you walk like a man. Now I order you to talk like a man."Feathertop gasped, struggled, and at last said in a small whisper, "Mother, I want to speak, but I have no brain. What can I say?""Ah, you can speak," Mother Rigby answered. "What shall you say? Have no fear. When you go out into the world, you will say a thousand things, and say them a thousand times...and saying them a thousand times again and again, you still will be saying nothing. So just talk, babble like a bird. Certainly you have enough of a brain for that."1. After breakfast, Mother Rigby decided to make __________.A. the birds fearB. her broomstick aliveC. a scarecrowD. a manlike companion2. Considering herself “a good worker”, Mother Rigby was confident in __________.A. her strange powersB. her talents for handicraftC. anything she madeD. her selection of materials3. Mother Rigby gave Feathertop her pipe so that __________.A. Feathertop would keep aliveB. Feathertop would be manlierC. Feathertop would live the same life as sheD. Feathertop would be related to her forever4. By calling Feathertop her “pet”, Mother Rigby wanted to show __________.A. her superiority over himB. her encouragement to himC. her love for himD. her interest in him5. According to Mother Rigby, Feathertop “still will be saying nothing” because __________.A. he was not clever enough to learn anythingB. he was only made to have birds’ intelligenceC. he did not have a brain to remember anythingD. he could learn nothing worthwhile in the world。

4 values of the triple Regge couplings determined from soft di raction data. More precisely, the proton and Pomeron structure functions are given in terms of the diagrams of Figs. 3 and 4, respectively. (Note that Fig. 4 is the upper part of the diagram obtained by squaring, in the sense of unitarity, the P amplitude in Fig. 1). We see that, due to factorization, F2P can be obtained from F2p (or more precisely from the combination F2d = 1 (F2p + F2n)), 2 P and g f appearing in the lower part of by replacing the Reggeon-proton couplings gpp pp Fig. 3, by the corresponding triple Reggeon couplings rPPP and rPPf which appear in the lower part of Fig. 4. The latter can be determined from soft di raction data (see below). Another di erence between the two structure functions is the ! 1 behaviour. Indeed, as far as the dimensional counting rules are concerned, the Pomeron is like a pion and, therefore, there is one spectator less than in the proton case. Thus the power of 1 is smaller by two units in the Pomeron case. (The same result is obtained at Q2 = 0 in terms of Regge intercepts). The CKMT model can be summarized with the following formulae 5, 6], valid in the region 1 Q2 5 GeV2 :

The contribution of di ractive processes to the deep inelastic scattering (DIS) crosssection, corresponding to the Pomeron exchange diagram of Figs. 1 and 2, can be written in the form 4]

1. Introduction
Di raction dissociation of virtual photons, observed by the H1 and ZEUS collaborations at HERA 1-4] provides information on the nature of the Pomeron and on its partonic structure. In a previous paper 5] a model (CKMT model) based on Regge theory has been proposed for the description of di ractive dissociation of both real and virtual photons. In this model the structure function of the Pomeron FP ( ; Q2 ) is related to that of the deuteron 6] via Regge factorization. Recently, experimental information on the Pomeron structure function at di erent values of Q2 has been obtained 2, 4]. These data are in reasonable agreement with the predictions of the model. In this paper, we extend our analysis of the Pomeron structure function and determine the gluonic content of the Pomeron. We use our model as initial condition in DGLAP evolution. We show that the Q2-dependence of the di ractive structure function, F2D , observed experimentally, can only be understood if the gluon distribution in the Pomeron is very hard.It is also shown that the gluons carry more momentum than quarks. This observation con rms theoretical expectations that the Pomeron is mainly connected with gluonic degrees of freedom. The plan of the paper is as follows. In Section 2 we recall the ingredients of the CKMT model. In Section 3 we perform the QCD evolution and in Section 4 we present our numerical results. In Section 5 we discuss other recent QCD analysis and give our concluse2 qiP ( ; Q2 ; t) + qiP ( ; Q2 ; t) i

(5)
Due to the arbitrariness in the normalization of FP discussed above, the partonic distributions qiP and qiP do not satisfy, in general, the energy-momentum sum rule. Many models of the Pomeron structure function are available in the literature 8,1014]. In the CKMT model 5] FP is determined using Regge factorization together with the * Note that the de nition of FP in Eq. (4) di ers from the one in Ref. 5] by a factor (1 ). The de nition in Eq. (4), which coincides with the one used in experimental papers 2, 4], is more appropriate for a partonic interpretation. We thank X. Artru for an enlightening correspondence on this point.

(2)
We have argued in Ref. 5] that the Pomeron in the diagrams of Figs. 1 and 2 can be considered as a Regge pole with a trajectory P (t) = P (0)+ 0 t determined from an analysis of soft processes, in which absorptive correction (Regge cuts) are taken into account. We have 5], 7] 0 (0) = 0:25 GeV 2 : ; (3) P (0) = 1:13 P In this case the di ractive contribution to DIS can be written in a factorized form
