The water cycle begins with evaporation, where sunlight warms water in oceans, lakes, and rivers, causing it to change into water vapor and rise into the air. This warming effect is aided by factors such as wind and temperature differences between the water and the surrounding environment.
As the water vapor rises, it cools and condenses into tiny droplets, forming clouds. When these droplets become heavy enough, they fall back to Earth in the form of precipitation, such as rain, snow, sleet, or hail. This process is known as precipitation.
Once on the ground, the water can take several paths. Some of it will evaporate back into the atmosphere, some will be absorbed by
plants through their roots and released into the air through a process called transpiration, and the rest will flow over land and into bodies of water like streams, rivers, and eventually back to the oceans.
Groundwater recharge is another significant part of the cycle. Some of the water infiltrates the ground and becomes part of the underground reservoirs, which can later discharge into surface waters or even become part of the water supply for humans.
The water cycle is influenced by various factors, including climate, topography, and human activities such as deforestation and urbanization. Climate change can alter the cycle by changing patterns of precipitation and evaporation. Human-made structures like dams and levees can also disrupt natural water flows.
