阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项
A
When the weather is bad or when the flu breaks out, we can let the kids do some fun things at home, which can be beneficial to kids.
Reading out loud
If your children are young enough, don't forget to read books to them out loud! Few children dislikehaving a good book read to them, and it's great for the development of their brains. However, if your children are a bit older and have moved onto more advanced books, there is always the choice of listening to an audiobook. This can also be done while they're doing something else.
Playing board games
Maybe your children's table is full of board games, which have been forgotten for a long time. It's a good time to bring them out when playing outside is no longer a choice. Surely, playing board games is a great way to connect with children. In addition, many board games are designed to get children thinking!
Having a dance party
Considering that all you need is a speaker or maybe just a phone, you can have a dance party wherever you are! This is a great way to get kids’ bodies moving when they are inside. Play some of your children's favorite music and let them dance to it. Not only is it good exercise, but it will help your children feel time is flying!
Doing jigsaw (拼图) puzzles
For most people that have children, it's common to have at least one jigsaw puzzle at home. Jigsaw puzzles are great because everyone can do them on their own time. Besides, your whole family will have a sense of achievement when everyone is smiling over the finished product.

My mother is a teacher. I often asked her, “ Why do you teach? What keeps you teaching?” The answer was always the same. “There is always that one child, that one moment that is worth it.”
Now, I am a teacher, too. But different from my mother, I teach students challenging activities outdoors. And when my mother asked me the similar questions, my answer was, “It’s that one child, that one special moment.”One of those moments happened recently. I was working with a group of girls in a four-week programme. Everything went on well through the “Team” events and we were moving on to a“High” one called the Wire Walk.
In the Wire Walk, each girl had to climb up the pegs in a tree to a wire, 8 meters high, and then walk across it. Of course, everything was safe for sure.
When it was Susie's turn, it seemed that she didn't really want to. I asked Susie if she was ready. She answered softly, “I suppose.”
Now, Susie was at the foot of the tree. She started to make the long reach. Then I found Susie was becoming nervous with every step. I realized she would not go much further.
Susie was halfway up. Then she stopped and held the tree tight, looking very afraid. Her eyes were closed. With her face against the tree, she cried, “I can't.”
The other girls sat in silence. I talked quietly to Susie, trying to relax her. I talked for a long time till I ran out of words.
“I will still be your friend no matter what, Susie!” Mary broke the silence.
To my surprise, Susie lifted her head and looked up to the wire. Then she turned to look down at Mary and smiled. Mary smiled back.
Finally, Susie made it all the way across that wire. When she returned to the ground, the first hug she looked for was from Mary. We all cheered. Moments like this keep me doing what I do.
4. Why did Susie stop halfway up to the wire?
A. It was too high for her to reach.
B. She was too afraid to move on.
C. Something was wrong with it.
D. The teacher asked her to do it.
5. Why did Mary break the silence?
A. To try again herself.
B. To relax the writer.
C. To encourage Susie.
D. To draw Susie's attention.
6. What can we learn from the story of Susie?
A. Helping others is helping ourselves.
B. A word of encouragement matters a lot.
C. Outdoor activities bring peoplecloser than ever.
D. A good method plays an important role in teaching.
7. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?
A. The Wire Walk
B. That One Moment
C. Fear and Courage
D. The Young Hearts

An anti-obesity program for Australian girls didn’t lead to any improvements in their diet, physical activities or body weight a year later, according to a new report.
Findings from the school-based intervention (介入), which involved exercise sessions and nutrition workshops for lower-income girls, are the latest disappointment in a lot of research attempting tohead offadult obesity and the disease risks that come with it.
Especially during the middle-and high-school years, girls’ physical activity reduces obviously, according to lead researcher David Lubans, from theUniversityofNewcastleinNew South Wales,Australia. He said, “In the future we need to make the programs more interesting and exciting and present information in a way that is meaningful to adolescent girl.”
Lubans and his workmates conducted their study in 12 schools in low-income areas ofNew South Wales. At the start of the study, girls in both groups weighed an average of close to 130pounds, with about four in ten considered overweight. Over the next year, adolescents in the intervention group were given pedometers (计步器) to encourage walking and running and invited to nutrition workshops and regular exercise sessions during the schoolday and at lunchtime. Participation in some of those activities were less than ideal. For example, the girls went to only one-quarter of lunchtime exercise sessions, and less than one in ten completed at-home physical activity or nutrition challenges, the researchers reported. At the end of the year, girls in both groups had gained a
similar amount of weight and there was no difference in their average body fat.
Preventive medicine researcher Robert Klesges said that although some anti-obesity programs have helped adults lose weight, the teen population has always been a source of failure for researchers. “The common belief is: nothing works,” he said. “And we have got to get beyond that.”
“We need to think outside the box,” said Klesges, who wasn’t involved in the new study. “That could include learning from what has worked in adult studies, such as giving meal replacement drinks or prepared foods to teens who have trouble making changes to their diet. Or, it could mean using a “step-care” method — rather than researchers or their doctor telling them to keep doing the same thing.” Klesges said.
8. The underlined words “head off” in Paragraph 2 can best be replaced by “________”.
A. damage
B. defend
C. prevent
D. affect
9. The methods used in the program to stop obesity don’t include ________.
A. walking and running
B. inviting them to nutrition workshops
C. joining exercise sessions regularly
D. giving meal replacement drinks
10. The main reason for the failure of the anti-obesity program is probably that ________.
A. the participants didn’t take an active part in it
B. the program was not interesting and exciting to participants
C. the participants didn’t get extra nutrition or exercise help
D. the program didn’t pay attention to healthy exercise
11. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. As researchers, it is important to have creative research methods.
B. Researchers need to give meals or prepare foods to participants.
C. Teen girls have no difficulty in making changes to their diet.
D. Some ant-obesity programs have not helped adults lose weight.
D
Recycling plastic has always been a stop-start effort, and the wide variety of plastics we produce, the pollution from waste, and other limitations make recycling an economic(经济) problem. It’s estimated(估计)only 9% of plastic ever created has been recycled. But with the help of a chemical process, Canadian Miranda Wang and her company BioCellection want to change that.
Stability is one of plastic greatest qualities and downside. There's limited evidence that some plastics can biodegrade (生物降解)but largely photo-plastics degrade in the sun. It’s a long process, and the truth is that we can only estimate how long it takes. Wang is looking to break the inaction and BioCellection's task is to make most plastic waste recyclable.
She outlines two current methods. One is to take plastics like water bottles, wash them, cut them, melt and reconstitute them. “That's a very limited process” she says, due to the requirement that plastics be “clean” . The other, which can handle dirtier plastics and a level of pollution, is called hydrolysis(热解). Intense heat is applied to break down plastics so they can be reused as oils for energy, but “it’s not economical,’’ she says.
BioCellection’s solution builds on research from over ten years ago, Wang explains, when a US studydiscovered pure polyethylene powder (聚乙烯粉)could be broken down by a catalyst (催化剂). Wang and her co-founder Jean hit upon a bacterium being able to eat plastic. In the years since, they engineered a comparable catalyst capable of doing the same job, only faster, which even works on plastics no one else can recycle at present. “We have now found a catalyst that is much cheaper than the one that was used before, Wang says.
Currently focusing on plastic films like shopping hags, the three-hour process breaks clown plastic into chemicals that can act as the building blocks for more complex plastic products.
“Right now we’re able to achieve about 70% transformation from plastic waste material to these chemicals,” she adds, saying they’re working to increase that figure.
12. Why has so little plastic been recycled?
A. Plastic is chemically stable.
B. Recycling plastic led to pollution.
C. We produced various plastics.
D. Most photo-plastics degrade in the sun.
13. What does Wang think of the two current methods?
A. Highly effective and dynamic.
B. Expensive and pollution-causing.
C. Limited and energy-consuming.
D. Widely used and recognized.
14. What did BioCellection find effective to recycle plastics?
A. Polyethylene powder.
B. Chemical products.
C. Plastic films.
D. A catalyst.
15. What is the text mainly about?
A. Miranda Wang and her company.
B. A new plastic recycling method.
C. The greatest downside of plastic.
D. Transformation of plastic waste.

VilmaWashingtonwas a nurse in Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital inPalo Alto,California. She has worked there for twenty-eight years. Since she came to the hospital, she has helped tens of thousands of premature babies come to the world.
Mrs.Washingtonwas a mother of four children and had a happy family. Her husband was an engineer and worked in a big company. The only child at home was Mikel, who was in his high school. Every day, Mrs.Washingtonwould get up at six, cook for breakfast for her husband and son, and then drive the baby to school before she went to work.
Her husband got good salaries and the family didn’t need her to earn money. But she still kept her work as a nurse, because she liked the work very much. She was a senior nurse in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (新生儿特护中心) to care for premature babies and was respected by all the doctors and nurses in the hospital. Patients, as well as doctors and nurses, came and left from the hospital, but she continued to work in the same hospital and even the same unit. Since it was one of the best children’s hospitals in the area, there were always more than enough patients. The work in the unit was naturally tough. Once you got into the nurse station, it was hard to find a chance to put yourself in a chair.
But Mrs.Washingtonnever complained about the job. Instead, she enjoyed it, “I enjoyed the moment when a baby comes to the world with my help,” she said. “I like to see the happy and excited expressions on the parents’ faces and hear the beautiful first cry of a baby.” All the patients liked her. Every Christmas, she could receive countless cards, most of which were from her patients.
This Monday, a new doctor came to work in her unit of the hospital. He was a handsome young man. When Mrs.Washingtonsaw the name on his name tag-Brandon Seminatore, something suddenly hit her.
“Do you live inHandwood Streetand your father is a bus driver?” she asked.
