二、阅读理解

Every evening, 15-year-old Rashida returns home from school, changes out of her uniform, and rushes to a neighboring farm to help her mother harvest vegetables. Her father is disabled, so the modest profit the two of them earn must cover food, clothing and other necessities for all seven children and their parents. Despite having precious little time to study, Rashida is one of the top students at her junior secondary school. But with so much responsibility on her small shoulders, she admits that it is sometimes hard for her to imagine a more promising future.
Last year, Rashida was invited to join 155 other girls at Camfed Ghana’s first Girls’ Career Camp, a program designed to inspire girls growing up in the country’s Northern Region to dream big, and to support them to pursue those dreams. “We organized this camp because we wanted to let girls know that even if they are struggling with poverty, their lives will not be defined by limitations,” says Dolores Dickson, Camfed Ghana’s Executive Director.
Over the course of five days, the camp led the junior and secondary school students through a range of experiences and career opportunities that were entirely new to them. Dr. Agnes Apusiga, a lecturer from the University of Development Studies, ran the workshop on goal-setting and career choices, describing the universities and training colleges in Ghana that could help them achieve their dreams. Participants then visited the University for Development Studies, where they toured the medical school and science labs. Another highlight was a workshop at the computer lab at Tamale Secondary School. Many of the girls had studied information technology from a book but had never before seen a computer.
“When the girls arrived at camp, they were not ambitious, because they didn’t have any idea what the world held for them,” says Eugenia Ayagiba, Project Officer with Camfed Ghana. “Many had scarcely traveled beyond their own villages.”
“I think the most important thing that happened at the camp is that we opened a window of hope for a group of girls coming from backgrounds of poverty,” says Eugenia. For Rashida, who has been laughed at in the past by her schoolmates because of her father’s disability, the experience was important. “She told one of the camp mentors(辅导员) that when she is at school, she often feels like a misfit, and she prefers to keep to herself,” says Eugenia. “But at the camp, it was different. She made friends with girls who have similar struggles. She took part in every single activity, every single game. On the last day, she said to her mentor, ‘The camp has challenged me to study hard. Now I see that there is light at the end of the tunnel.’21.How many are there in Rashida’s family?
A.Seven B.Eight C.Nine D.Ten
22.Why did the camp lead the students to visit universities and training colleges?
A.To show they are better than their schools
B.To encourage them to get good education.
C.To show them what they are like
D.To get them to touch the advanced equipment there
23.What can we infer from the passage?
A.Rashida has become friends with her mentors
B.Rashida’s mentors has encouraged her a lot.
C.Rashida was sad because of her father’s disability.
D.Rashida has had her new dream since the camp
24.The best title of the passage is ___________.
A.Poor Girls in Ghana B.Girls’ Career Camp
C.Camfed Ghana D.Students in Ghana Dream Big

Taylor Swift was born on December 13, 1989, in Wyomissing, Pennsylvania. Swift’s family ran a farm. “I had her sitting on a small horse when she was nine months old,” said Swift's mother. “If my dream had gone well, she’d be in a horse show right now.” The only obvious forerunner (先驱) of Swift's musical talent was her grandmother, an opera singer.
That talent showed itself early: when the family went to see a Disney musical film, Swift would come out of the theater singing all the songs correctly. At the age of 11, she sang “The Star-Spangled Banner” at a Philadelphia 76ers game. The experiences during her pre-teen years encouraged the creativity to go with Swift’s talent. As a child, she attended the academically competitive Wyndcroft School in Pottstown, but then switched to public schools in Wyomissing. Although it was her hometown, she didn’t know any of her classmates, and she was terrified. Swift began to understand the storytelling feature of country songs, and put her feelings into songs of her own.
One of her future hits, “The Outside”, was written when she was only 12. “I wrote that about the scariest feeling I’ve ever felt: going to school, looking at those faces, and not knowing who you’re gonna talk to that day,” she said. “In the music, I could never feel the kind of rejection (拒绝) that I felt in middle school.” Swift's parents quickly realized that they had someone special on their hands. They sold their farm when she was 13 and moved the family to Hendersonville, Tennessee.
Swift had the ability, above all, to put feelings into words with accuracy (准确) far beyond her years. In “Our Song” she wrote, “Our song is the slamming screen door, going out late, tapping on your window.” In the summer of 2006, “Tim McGraw” came out, and almost from the beginning the 16-year-old Taylor Swift was a star.

B. was expected to help on the farm
C. showed her talent for music early
D. learned singing from her grandmother
26.Which of the following can best describe Swift’s school days in Wyomissing?
A. Difficult
B. Helpful
C. Competitive
D. Satisfying
27.Taylor Swift’s parents moved the family to Hendersonville ________.

The world is filled with smart, talented and gifted people. We meet them every day.A few days ago, my car was not running well.I pulled it into a garage, and the young mechanic had it fixed within just a few minutes. He knew what was wrong by simply listening to the engine.I was amazed. The sad truth is that only great talent is not enough.
I am often shocked at how little talented people earn.I heard the other day that less than 5 percent of Americans earn more than $100,000 a year.A business consultant (顾问) who
specializes in the medical trade was telling me how many doctors and dentists struggle with money. It was this business consultant that gave me the phase, “They are one skill away from great wealth”.
There is an old saying that goes,“Job means ‘just over broke(破产)’”.And unfortunately,I would say that the saying applies to millions of people.Because school does not think financial(财务的)intelligence is intelligence, most workers “live within their means”.They work and they pay the bills.Instead I recommend to young people to seek work for what they will learn, more than what they will earn.
When I ask the classes I teach, “How many of you can cook a better hamburger than McDonald’s?” almost all the students raise their hands.I then ask, “So if most of you can cook a better hamburger, how come McDonald’s makes more money than you?” The answer is obvious: McDonald’s is excellent at business systems. The reason why so many talented people are poor is that they focus on building a better hamburger and know little or nothing about business systems. The world is filled with talented poor people. They focus on perfecting their skills at building a better hamburger rather than the skills of selling and delivering the hamburger.29.How did the mechanic find the problem in the car?
A.by listening to the engine
B.by listening to what the author said
C.by pulling it to the garage
D.by driving it
30.Why do talented people earn so little according to the author?
A.They have no talents.
B.They have no good skills.
C.They don’t work enough.
D.They don’t have financial intelligence.
31.The success of McDonald's lies in its .
A.skills at making hamburgers
B.excellent service
C.talented workers
D.good business systems
32.Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A.The world lacks smart, talented and gifted people.
B.The world lacks skilled workers.
C.The world lacks people like McDonald’s.
D.The world lacks excellent doctors and dentists.
D
Exercise seems to be good for the human brain, with many recent studies suggesting that regular exercise improves memory and thinking skills. But an interesting new study asks whether the apparent cognitive benefits from exercise are real or just a placebo effect — that is, if we think we will be “smarter” after exercise, do our brains respond accordingly? The answer has significant implications for any of us hoping to use exercise to keep our minds sharp throughout our lives.
While many studies suggest that exercise may have cognitive benefits, recently some scientists have begun to question whether the apparently beneficial effects of exercise on thinking might be a placebo effect. So researchers at Florida State University in Tallahassee and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign decided to focus on expectations, on what people anticipate that exercise will do for thinking. If people’s expectations jibe (吻合) closely with the actual benefits, then at least some of those improvements are probably a result of the placebo effect and not of exercise.
For the new study, which was published last month in PLOS One, the researchers recruited 171 people through an online survey system, they asked half of these volunteers to estimate by how much a stretching and toning regimens (拉伸运动) performed three times a week might improve various measures of thinking. The other volunteers were asked the same questions, but about a regular walking program.
In actual experiments, stretching and toning program generally have little if any impact on people’s cognitive skills. Walking, on the other hand, seems to substantially improve thinking ability.
But the survey respondents believed the opposite, estimating that the stretching and toning program would be more beneficial for the mind than walking. The estimates of benefits from walking were lower.
These data, while they do not involve any actual exercise, are good news for people who do exercise. “The results from our study suggest that the benefits of aerobic exercise are not a placebo effect,” said Cary Stothart, a graduate student in cognitive psychology at Florida State University, who led the study.
If expectations had been driving the improvements in cognition seen in studies after exercise, Mr. Stothart said, then people should have expected walking to be more beneficial for thinking than stretching. They didn’t, implying that the changes in the brain and thinking after exercise are physiologically genuine.
The findings are strong enough to suggest that exercise really does change the brain and may, in the process, improve thinking, Mr. Stothart said. That conclusion should encourage scientists to look even more closely into how, at a molecular level, exercise remodels the human brain, he said. It also should encourage the rest of us to move, since the benefits are, it seems, not imaginary, even if they are in our head.
33.Which of the following about the placebo effect is TRUE according to the passage?
A. It occurs during exercise.
B. It has cognitive benefits.
C. It is just a mental reaction.
D. It is a physiological response.
34.Why did the researchers at the two universities conduct the research?
A. To discover the placebo effect in the exercise.
B. To prove the previous studies have a big drawback.
C. To test whether exercise can really improve cognition.
D. To encourage more scientists to get involved in the research.
35.What can we know about the research Cary Stothart and his team carried out?
A. They employed 171 people to take part in the actual exercise.
B. The result of the research removed the recent doubt of some scientists.
C. The participants thought walking had a greater impact on thinking ability.
D. Their conclusion drives scientists to do research on the placebo effect.
36.What might be the best title for the passage?
A. Is it necessary for us to take exercise?
B. How should people exercise properly?
C. What makes us smarter during exercise?
D. Does exercise really make us smarter?

Dear Sam,
How are you getting along with your life recently? Today I’m writing to talk about my plan for college life in the near future.
College life is both a joy and a challenge to me. Therefore, adjusting myself quickly to the new circumstance is the first thing I will deal with. For example, I’ll try to get used to the college schedule as soon as possible and I’ll make some friends so that I can feel at ease in college.
Next, various abilities should be developed. Besides being independent in study and life, I will enter for meaningful activities to get more social practice and develop my strong points.
Can you give me some advice? As a sophomore, you must have a lot to tell me.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua。
