SCHOOL TIME TEENS

More than Just Nice Costumes
I’m sure most of you have heard of cosplayers. These people dress as characters from movies, TV shows, films and comic books. However, there is a lot more to a good cosplayer than what people see!
Some cosplayers buy their costumes, while others make them at home. Making a costume takes a lot of time and skill. You have to be a propmaker (道具制作师) and artist… and this is only the basics.
It may not be obvious, but computers are important for cosplay. Many cosplayers write code (代码) for their costumes to light up, make sounds or operate electronically. Cosplayers with light-up costumes are also computer programmers! When I was making a pair of wings, the structure of the wing frame defied (违抗) the laws of gravity (重力) and demanded scientific numbers from mathematics equations (公式). I pulled out a physics textbook and started my wings. When I finished, I handed in my cosplay at school as a research project and actually got academic credits (学分) for it! Sometimes, a cosplayer is also a researcher, physicist and engineer!
Even for cosplayers that don’t make their costumes, a lot of skills go into a good cosplay. Every cosplayer is a make-up artist and a hairstylist. Have you ever styled a wig? It’s a hug fuss! Anyone
that can make a wig deserves a round of applause (鼓掌).

Have you ever bought Genki Forest (元气森林) sparkling water because it’s advertised as “sugar-free”? It’s popular among students. The company recently apologized for a misleading advertisement.
The company said the drinks are “sucrose-free”(零蔗糖), but
this is not the same as “sugar-free”. Now the company has changed the words “sugar-free” to “low sugar” on the bottles.
In fact, there are many kinds of sugar. Sucrose is just one of them. Other kinds of sugar, such as fructose (果糖) and sugar alcohol (糖醇), are still in Genki Forest drinks. These types of sugar are used as sweeteners (甜味剂). They offer little energy, but a small amount of them can make drinks taste sweet. That’s why diet drinks like Genki Forest are popular among people who want to lose weight.
However, studies find that the sweeteners might make people eat more. When you eat sweet-tasting things, it sends your brain a “sweet signal”. Then your brain tells your body to prepare itself to take in energy. But since the diet soft drink has little energy, you will feel hungry and start getting energy by eating more food. According to China Daily, drinking too many diet drinks might lead to obesity (肥胖) and type 2 diabetes (糖尿病). Would you like to try diet drinks now?
