When high school head teacher Mervyn Tennant retired and moved to the fishing village of Oracabessa Bay on Jamaica's north coast, he had to witness a regular and heartbreaking sight—some people illegally hunting the critically endangered Hawksbill sea turtles
(海龟)and stealing their eggs.
Prized on the black market for their great qualities, sea turtle eggs fetched much more than an average wage in the community. "If they worked on a building site, that would be equal to a month's pay," Mr Tennant says.
Oracabessa Bay is where the author Ian Fleming created James Bond, probably the world's most famous fictional spy. It is now a tourist attraction, attracting visitors from all over the world. However, until recently the landscape hid a cruel reality—coral reefs were dying off, and fish numbers had dropped increasingly. The tourism and fishing industries were threatened.
Mr Tennant is one of the many residents of the village who decided to fight back to protect not only the turtles, but entire community's ecosystem. The Oracabessa Bay Fishing Sanctuary
(OBFS)was established in 2019. It is a non-profit organization.
In 2020 the National Environment and Planning Agency
(NEPA)painted a cruel picture for sea life. It reported that coral reefs were over 90 percent threatened and had been taken over by fast-growing algae
Fish numbers were low and virtually all sea turtles and their eggs were being hunted on the nesting beach.
Fishers, marine biologists, hotel owners united not only to restore corals, fish stock and sea turtles, but also to establish sustainable livelihoods and a community capable of living in harmony with nature.
With support of the Global Environment Facility's Small Grants Programme
(SGP)and UNDP, OBFS set out to preserve the marine ecosystem in the 74-hectare natural reserve and to bring back fish, sea turtles and coral.
(1)What was a heartbreaking sight to the retired head teacher?
A: Hunting sea turtles illegally.
B: The sea turtle's dying off.
C: The fish number's dropping.
D: The disappearance of some sea creatures.
(2)Why did some people kill the endangered turtles?
A: To add collections.
B: To eat them as food.
C: To earn money.
D: To satisfy curiosity.
(3)What can we infer about Oracabessa Bay?
A: It is the birthplace of James Bond.
B: It used to be an attractive place.
C: It faces an economical problem.
D: Its ecosystem is breaking down.
(4)What is the goal of OBFS?
A: To fight back fast-growing algae.
B: To live in harmony with land.
C: To make ecosystems healthier.
D: To attract visitors.
根据文章第一段的he had to witness a regular and heartbreaking sight—some people illegally hunting the critically endangered Hawksbill sea turtles
(海龟)and stealing their eggs.
故选A。
Prized on the black market for their great qualities, sea turtle eggs fetched much more than an average wage in the community. "If they worked on a building site, that would be equal to a month's pay,"在黑市上,海龟蛋因其优良的品质而备受珍视,比社区里获得的平均工资要高得多。
How do you like your milk: cooked or raw? It may sound a strange question, but it's being asked more often at kitchen tables, grocery stores and farmers' markets across the US.
The vast majority of milk we drink is heat-treated to kill off harmful elements. Raw milk, on the other hand, goes straight to bottle. Fans call it milk as nature intended: nutrient-rich and full of a good kind of bacteria. Some fans go further, calling it a super food that aids digestion, benefits the immune system and treats some diseases.
An increasing number of people agree. For health-conscious, organic-loving shoppers, raw milk is a growing food trend. People feel uneasy at the thought of heated milk sitting under supermarket lighting. But despite the enthusiasm, it's a trend with a terrible side. Pasteurization
(加热杀菌)is a reason—it's highly effective at killing some harmful things that can hang, around in the body of even healthy cows. Raw milk, on the other hand, relies heavily on the skill of the farmer to avoid them.
Raw milk illnesses have increased as more people drink it. Between 2009 and 2014, raw milk and raw milk cheese caused the vast majority
(96%)of all illnesses linked to dairy products. Considering far fewer people consume it, that makes unpasteurized dairy 840 times more risky than pasteurized. The recent deaths of
two people who ate raw milk cheese made in New York underscored the sometimes deadly consequences. And for young children, whose underdeveloped immune systems make them more vulnerable
(易受伤的), the dangers of raw milk make it hard to recommend.
(1)Why does most milk that people drink is heat-treated?
A: To add some useful elements.
B: To make it taste more delicious.
C: To make it safer for people to drink.
D: To make it have a better appearance.
(2)How may people feel seeing heat-treated milk sold in supermarkets?
A: Uncomfortable.
B: Satisfied.
C: Scared.
D: Surprised.
(3)Which of the following is a reason for raw milk not being accepted?
A: It's not good for people's health.
B: It may contain something harmful.
C: It's often put under market lighting.
D: It comes from unhealthy cows.
(4)What is the best title of the text?
A: Benefits of Raw Milk
B: How to Tell the Quality of Milk
C: Reasons for Choosing
Heated Milk
D: Raw Milk: a Super Food or Super Risky?

The reason why dominant
(占支配地位的)men always seem to rise to the top has been uncovered. Researchers say
they are able to make decisions far faster than those with nondominant personalities. It could explain why so many top CEOs and politicians are known for their dominant personalities.
The study found high-dominance men respond faster in situations where a choice is needed, regardless of social context. Promptness
(敏捷)to respond in high-dominance men was accompanied by a noticeably amplified brain signal. In addition, when the researchers analyzed the EEG
(脑电图)images of the high-dominance participants, they identified a higher activity in areas of the brain associated with emotion and behavior, compared to low-dominance participants.
This promptness in decision-making can act as a biomarker for social personalities. "Dominance itself depends partly on the ability to make decisions faster than others. This allows the individual to act first in social situations, which might result in an evolutionary advantage," the team wrote.
They now hope to link these reading to roles such as CEOs, and to find out if the same differences happen in female and children. "In the future, it will be important to find out whether even stronger brain signals are observed in particularly dominant individuals, such as CEOs," said Carmen Sandi of the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne.
She added, "It will also be relevant to understand whether these differences in promptness to respond and brain signals are also observed in women that differ in dominance and whether they are already present in children. Our findings may open a new research approach using EEG signatures as a measure for social dominance."
The study involved 240 male students at the University of Lausanne who were sorted into high or low dominance groups by a standard "dominance scoring" questionnaire proved in many former studies.
(1)What makes dominant people stand out?
A: Their wiser decisions.
B: Their kind personalities.
C: Their high social status.
D: Their rapidity of responding.
(2)Which word can replace the underlined word "amplified" in paragraph 2?
A: affected
B: adjusted
C: enhanced
D: controlled
(3)What will the researchers use the findings to do?
A: Save people's life.
B: Test the participants' brain.
C: Check on more people.
D: Show the effect of dominance.
(4)What can be inferred about the study from the text?
A: It showed how people became CEOs.
B: It used previous research findings.
C: It involved some women and children.
D: It corrected people's ideas of dominance.
The study found high-dominance men respond faster in situations where a choice is needed, regardless of social context.
This promptness in decision-making can act as a biomarker for social personalities. "Dominance itself depends partly on the ability to make decisions faster than others. This allows the individual to act first in social situations, which might result in an evolutionary advantage," the team wrote.‘这种做决策的迅速性可以作为社会性格的一个生物标记。
根据上句中的high-dominance men respond faster高支配力的人们反应更快和下句中的a higher activity in areas of the brain associated with emotion and behavior大脑中与情绪和行为相关的区域更加活跃可知,高支配力人们的快速反应伴随着明显增强的大脑信号。
They now hope to link these reading to roles such as CEOs, and to find out if the same differences happen in female and children. "In the future, it will be important to find out whether even stronger brain signals are observed in particularly dominant individuals, such as CEOs,"他们现在希望把这些读物与诸如CEO这样的角色联系起来,并找出女人和儿童之间是否有同样的差异。
‘未来,研究是否在具有支配性的个体
(如首席执行官)身上观察到更强烈的大脑信号将是很重要的’可知,研究员利用研究成果的目的是:在更多的人身上进行核实。
故选C。
(4)B 推理判断题。
根据最后一段The study involved 240 male students at the University of Lausanne who were sorted into high or low dominance groups by a standard "dominance scoring" questionnaire proved in many former studies.

Throughout my growth, I would ask my dad questions and he told me the answers. Is there really a man in the moon? How do sailboats work? I understood one thing about my dad: he knew everything. My dad was a hero, Mr. Know-it-all.
In my teen years, he taught me things I'd need to know to survive in the real world. How to check your car tire's pressure. The correct knife to use to cut a watermelon.
When I moved out on my own, I called him at least once a week, usually when I needed to know how to fix something in my apartment: the toilet; the air-conditioning; the wall, once, when I threw a shoe at a terrifying spider. He seemed to have every piece of information I exactly needed.
I don't know when it happened, I needed him less. But our conversations when I called evolved into six words. Nothing more. Me: "Hi, Dad." Him: "Hi, sweets. Here's Mom." Because her, I still needed —What's your chicken soup recipe? Do I need to call the doctor for my daughter's fever? Can you read this draft of my novel?
I loved my dad of course, but I wondered at times if maybe he had already shared everything I needed to know. I knew all his random jobs. I knew about the apple orchard, the summer at the manufacturing plant that burned his hand, and even the restaurant, where he learned how to make the best omelet(煎蛋卷)in the Western hemisphere. Maybe, after knowing a man for 40 years, there's nothing left to say.
What's more. I relied mostly on my husband to solve more technical and complicated problems such as water heaters and insect removal. For everything else, we had Google.
Then, this past summer, my husband, our four kids and I moved in with my parents for three weeks while our own house was being decorated.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
They owned a shabby lake house and Dad asked me to help him repair it. ________
A few weeks later, after we moved back into our decorated house. I called my dad.
________
Paragraph 1
They owned a shabby lake house and Dad asked me to help him repair it. I was nervous for it was hard, manual labor, requiring professional knowledge that was beyond me. However, he did everything in such an organized way as I had never expected. With the skills he explained, I dismantled the rotten floor piece by piece and unbelievably for the first time ever, I cut wood with a circular saw. As I passed him the wood for the new roof, l asked in surprise, "How do you know all these?" "It is no big deal if you spent a summer building them." A triumphant smile spread across his face. I realized it is not the case that there is nothing left to say.
Paragraph 2
A few weeks later, after we moved back into our decorated house. I called my dad. "Hi, sweets. Here's Mom." "Wait, Dad. How are you?" We ended up talking about the new battery for his sailboat and my present job. It sounds like a normal father-and-daughter conversation to anyone else, nothing earth-shattering. But to me, it was an entirely novel beginning. I spent 40 years needing to talk to him; now I talk to him because I want to. Working on that home repair project with my dad showed me I had more to learn about him than I thought. It is a process of renovating the house as well as our relationship.
