This year some twenty-three hundred teenagers ( young people aged from 13 to 19) from all over the world will spend about ten months in US homes. They will attend US schools, meet US teenagers, and form impressions of the real America. At the same time, about thirteen hundred American teenagers will go to other countries to learn new languages and gain a new understanding of the rest of the world.
Here is a two-way student exchange in action. Fred, nineteen, spent last year in Germany with George’s family. In turn, George’s son Mike spent a year in Fred’s home in America.
Fred, a lively young man, knew little German when he arrived, but after two months’ study, the language began to come to him. Schools were completely different from what he had
expected—much harder. Students rose respectfully when the teacher entered the room. They took fourteen subjects instead of the six that are usual in the United States. There were almost no outside activities.
Family life, too, was different. The father’s word was law, and all activities were around the family rather than the individual(个人). Fred found the food too simple at first. Also, he missed having a car.
“Back home, you pick up some friends in a car and go out and have a good time. In Germany, you walk, but you soon learn to like it.〞
At the same time, In America, Mike, a friendly German boy, was also forming his idea. “I suppose I should criticize(批评) American schools,〞he says. “It is far too easy by our level. But I have to say that I like it very much. In Germany we do nothing but study. Here we take part in many outside activities. I think that maybe your schools are better in training for citizens(公民). There ought to be some middle ground between the two.

One of the things I always believe is that no matter how bad something is, you can take something positive from it. The one time I wasn’t sure of that was on September 11.
I usually wake up at 6:30 or 7:00 in the morning. That day, I happened to wake up earlier. I turned on the TV and I saw that a plane had crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Centre. My first reaction(反响) was that it was a terrible accident. Then I saw another plane fly into the South Tower and I realized that I was witnessing(目睹) an act of terrorism.
My wife and I spent the day watching the terrible pictures over and over again. When I watched family members looking for their loved ones, the pain in their eyes was something I would never forget. I couldn’t understand how something this terrible could have happened.
It wasn’t until a few weeks after September 11 that I began to see that perhaps some good did come from this tragedy(悲剧). People seem different now, more understanding, more tolerant(宽容的). Little things that seemed to be such a trouble before are no longer big things. Personally, I am more tolerant than I was. I realize that life is too short, and too precious(珍贵的), to let myself get worried over small things. I’ve learnt also that you can’t take things for granted(认为...是当然的). Things change in the blink of an eye. People go to work and don’t come back. One moment they are living and the next moment they are not. And, it doesn’t matter who you are, there is nothing you can do about it. We never know when our time here will be over, so we all need to make the most every minute we have.
You try to learn from what happened. You can’t be used up by it. You can’t live by it. All you can do is just live.
73. The word “positive〞in the passage probably means _______.
A. false
B. bad
C. good
D. real
74. From September 11, the writer has realized that ________.
A. people should make the most of every minute they have
B. he has become less tolerant towards others
C. he should get worried about little things
D. life is too short to care about others
75. What is the best title of this passage?
A. A Report about September 11.
B. The Tragedy of September 11
C. September 11 and My Family
D. September 11 and My Turn
E
During the twentieth century there has been a great change in the lives of women. A woman marrying at the end of the nineteenth century would probably have seven or eight children, of whom four or five lived till they were five years old and up. By the time the youngest was fifteen, the mother would have been in her early fifties and would expect to live a further twenty years, during which chance and health made it unusual for her to get paid work. Today women marry younger and have fewer children. Usually a woman’s youngest child will be fifteen when she is forty-five and can be expected to live another thirty-five years and is likely to take paid work until sixty.
This important change in women’s life has only recently begun to have its full effect on women economic (经济的) position. Even a few years ago most girls left school and took a full-time job. However, when they married their school-leaving age is sixteen. Many girls stay at school after that age, and though women marry younger, more married women stay at work at least until shortly before their first child is born. Very many more afterwards return to fuller part-time work. Such changes have led to a new relationship in marriage (婚姻), with the husband accepting a greater share of the duties and satisfactions of family life.
76. We are told that in a family about 1900________.
A. few children died before they were five
B. seven or eight children lived to be more than five
C. the youngest child would be fifteen
D. four or five children died when they were five
77. One reason why the woman of today may take a job is that she______.
A. is younger when her children are old enough to look after themselves
B. does not like children herself
C. needn’t worry about food for her children
D. can be free from family duties when she reaches sixty
78. Many girls are now likely to_______.
A. give up their jobs for good after they are married
B. leave school as soon as they can
C. marry so that they can get a job
D. continue working until they are going to have a baby
79. According to the passage, it is now quite usual for women to _______.
A. stay at home after leaving school
B. marry men younger than themselves
C. start working again in life
D. marry while still at school
80. Now a husband probably_________.
A. plays a greater part in looking after children
B. helps his wife by doing much of the housework
C. feels dissatisfied with his part in the family
D. takes a part-time job so that he can help in the home
