High School Smoking Declines to 10-Year Low
Smoking by high school students has dropped to its lowest level in a decade〔十年〕,the government said recently, crediting〔归功于〕the decline〔减少〕to steep〔过高的〕 cigarette taxes and school programs that discourage kids from picking up the habit.
Just 28.5 percent of high school students in a nationwide survey〔调查〕 last year reported that they had smoked a cigarette in the previous month -- down from 36.4 percent five years ago,the CDCP (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) said. The rate is the lowest since 1991, when 27.5 percent of high school students said they smoked. The figure climbed for most of the 1990s before reversing in 1999.Freshmen〔大学一年级学生〕, sophomores〔大学二年级学生〕, juniors〔大学三年级学生〕and seniors〔大学四年级学生〕 all showed sharp declines from their heights of the 1990s.Seniors still said most often that they smoked -- 35.2 percent -- and freshmen the least,at 23.9 percent.
The CDCP said the decline was likely the result of higher cigarette taxes. The average retail price 〔平均零售价〕 of cigarettes rose 70 percent from December 1997 to May ,the agency noted. School-based anti-smoking programs and anti-tobacco messages aired on national media〔媒体〕likely also played a role, the CDCP said.
In the survey, 63.9 percent of high school students said they had taken at least one puff of a cigarette -- down from 70.2 percent in 1997.
And 13.8 percent said they were frequent〔经常的〕 smokers, defined as having smoked on at least 20 days in the previous month. That figure was 16.7 percent in 1997.
