Australia’s Great Barrier Reef has lost more than half of its corals since 1995 due to warmer seas driven by climate change, a study has found. Scientists found all types of corals had suffered a decline across the world’s largest reef system. The sharp falls came after mass bleaching(白化)events in 2016 and 2017. More mass bleaching occurred this year. “There is no time to lose—we must sharply decrease greenhouse gas emissions ASAP,” the researchers said.
The study, published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B, was conducted by marine scientists at the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies in Queensland. Scientists assessed the health and size of coral colonies across the reef from 1995 to 2017. They found populations had dropped by more than 50% in all coral sizes and species, but especially in branching and table-shaped corals. These are the large, structural species which usually provide habitats for fish and other marine life.
Prof Terry Hughes, a study co-author, said these coral types had been “worst affected” by the back-to-back mass bleachings which damaged two-thirds of the reef. Bleaching occurs when corals under stress drive out the algae—known as zooxanthellae(虫黄藻)—that give them colour.
Corals can recover if normal conditions return, but it can take decades. A study in 2019
高二英语质量监测试卷第3页(共8页)
found that damaged coral colonies had struggled to recover because most of the adult corals had died. “A lifeful coral population has millions of small, baby corals, as well as many large ones,” said lead author Dr Andy Dietzel. “Our results show the ability of the Great Barrier Reef to recover its resilience is compromised compared to the past, because there are fewer babies, and fewer large breeding adults.”
24. What has been found in the study of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef ?
A. All types of corals has been on the rise.
B. Over half of its corals have been lost.
C. Mass bleaching events came after the sharpest falls.

26.Which word can best describe Dr Andy Dietzel’s attitude to the Great Barrier Reef’s future?
A. Indifferent.
B. Concerned.
C. Positive.
D. Enthusiastic.
27. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Great Barrier Reef has lost half of its corals since 1995.

For students feeling the pinch from the pandemic(瘟疫), how to fund academic efforts has been a tough nut to crack – but an Indonesian college has a refreshing new idea.
A hospitality college in Bali, Indonesia, has begun accepting coconuts as payment when students face economic hardship as a result of the coronavirus disease.
When students at the Venus Tourism Academy pay their fees with coconuts, the college will use them to harvest natural coconut oil, UPI reported.
Alternatively, students can pay using leaves from moringa and gotu kola plants, which can be transformed into herbal soap and sold to raise money for the academy, Food & Wine added.
The program has been running since March, after the college received a permit to allow it to operate on this basis, according to The Bali Sun.
Venus Tourism Academy’s director, Wayan PasekAdi Putra, told local news outlet Balipuspa News: “Initially, the students who face economic hardship can pay for their fees by divided payments in three times, with the first installment at 50%, the second 20%, and the third 30%. Because of this Covid pandemic, we have adapted a flexible policy. We produce coconut oil, so students can pay their tuition by bringing coconuts.”
He added: “We have to educate them to optimize the natural resources in their surroundings. When the pandemic is over, t hey will enter the world of hospitality with different skills.”
Students staying in areas with the highest numbers of COVID-19 cases are not allowed to attend lectures in person. Those from less-affected areas are divided into three groups and must take their classes by turns, according to Food & Wine.
Bali is a major international tourist destination but in August, the Balinese government closed the island to non-Indonesian visitors until 2021, BBC News reported.
28. According to the media, what can we know about the college?
A. The college will use coconuts to make chocolates.

Scientists have designed “transparent wood” that could replace conventional glass in windows. The innovation was developed using wood from the balsa tree, which is native to South and Central America, and claims to be five times more thermally efficient than glass.
The team treated balsa wood in an oxidizing bath that bleaches it of nearly all visibility and then penetrated(渗透)it with a synthetic polymer (合成聚合物) called polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), creating a product that is virtually transparent. Unlike traditional glass, the transparent wood can bear much stronger impacts and will bend or break when damaged, instead of shattering.
The transparent wood was created by teams at the University of Maryland and University of Colorado, which set out to find a greener alternative to conventional glass – a production that creates 25,000 tons in emissions each year.
Along with contributing to greenhouse gases, glass contributes to a loss of energy. Residential building windows in particular account for 10-25% of the heat loss due to their poor thermal management capability, the team wrote in the study. Exploring energy efficient window materials is thus highly desirable to address heating costs, energy shortages, and the global impact of climate change associated with increased carbon emissions.
The team notes that the bonding between PVA and cellulose in the wood, creates a tightly packed structure that allows for more thermal protection and makes it more long-lived and lighter than glass.
“Switching to transparent wood could prove to be cost efficient as well,” researchers shared in a statement. It is approximately five times more thermally efficient than glass, cutting energy costs. It is made from a sustainable, renewable resource with low carbon emissions. It’s also compatible with existing industrial processing equipment, making the transition into manufacturing an easy prospect.
32. What is the m eaning of “transparent” in paragraph 1?
A. man-made
B. as clear as glass
C. energy–saving
D. environmentally-friendly
33. Which of the following about “transparent wood” is NOT true?
A. The material of it comes from a balsa tree in nature.
B. It won’t break into pieces even when damaged.
C. It is easier to lose heat to cool the room in summer.
D. It is lighter and can be used longer than glass.
34. What’s the text mainly about?
A. A new way to produce transparent wood .
B. Transparent wood’s advantage over conventional glass.
C. A kind of tough wood is discovered.
D. More balsa trees will be planted.

35. What is the purpose of inventing “transparent wood”?
A. to save cost and make more money.

C. to cut down greenhouse gas to protect environment.
D. to find a greener choice to replace glass.

Once there was a little girl Lily who was very friendly and popular in her class. She was friends with everyone in her class. There was no one in class who did not like her. She was very kind and would always be busy with her friends. She felt very happy that she had so many friends at school and in her neighborhood.
On Friendship Day, her class organized an event, in which everyone had to make three presents and give them to their best friends. Lily was really looking forward to the coming Friendship Day as she was expecting gifts from her friends. However, when all the presents were shared among her classmates, she was the only one who hadn’t received any presents. She felt terrible and cried a lot. She wondered how that was possible. She had made so much effort to be friends with everyone but in the end no one thought of her as one of their best friends.
Everyone came and tried to comfort her for a while but each one only stayed for a short time before leaving. This was exactly what Lily had done so many times to others.
On that day when she got home, her mother saw her sad face. And then her mother asked her the reason for her sadness. “Where can I find true friends?” Lily asked. Her mother was surprised at her question. Then she asked Lily what had happened in school. Her mother comfort her and said, “You cannot buy friends with a smile or a few good words. If you really want true friends, you will have to give them real time and love. For a true friend you must always be available,in good times and bad.”

Her mother shook her head. She said, "My dear, you are a lovely girl but you can't be a close friend to everybody. There just isn't enough time available for everyone, so it's only possible to have a few true friends. The others will be playmates but they won't be close friends.” Hearing this Lily realized that altho ugh she was a good classmate, she had not been a true friend to anyone. She had tried not to argue with anyone and she had tried to pay attention to everyone but now she had found out that was not enough to create true friendships.
