第二部分阅读理解(满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

21.(6分)To my Charley on his wedding day:
I know you think these notes are silly. I have watched you wear a long face over the years when I give them to you. But understand that sometimes I want to tell you something and I want to get it just right. Putting it down on paper helps me do that. I wish I had been a better writer, I wish I had gone to college. If I had, I think I would have studied English and maybe my vocabulary would have improved. So many times I feel I am using the same words over and over. Like a woman wearing the same dress every day. So boring!
What I want to say to you, Charley, is you are marrying a wonderful girl. I think of Catherine in many ways like I think of Roberta. Like a daughter. She is sweet and patient. You should be the same with her, Charley.
Here is what you are going to find out about marriage: you have to work at it together* And have to love three things. You have to love
1) Each other.
2) Your children (when you have some).
3) Your marriage.
What I mean by that last one is, there may be times that you fight, and sometimes you Catherine won’t even like each other. But those are the times you have to love your marriage like a third party. Look at your wedding photos. Look at any memories you’ve made. And if believe in those memories, they will pull you back together.
I’m very proud of you today, Charley. I am putting this in your tuxedo pocket because I know how you lose things.
I love you every day!
Mom

A.To congratulate her son. B.To give him some advice.
C.To show her pity. D.To talk things through.

A.Regret. B.Pride.
C.Care. D.Complaint.

22.(8分)A seaside Long Island village on Saturday honored the memory of a girl whose message in a bottle was found after Superstorm Sandy, discovered by cleanup workers a dozen years after she threw it into the ocean.
A plate was placed on a rock near the bridge, where the bottle was discovered in December. It reads: “Be excellent to yourself dude(朋友),” the same message inside the bottle. The note, a line from the 1989 Keanu Reeves movie “Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure,” was written by Sidonie Fery and threw into the ocean inside a bottle. She died in 2010 at the age of 18 in a fall from a cliff(悬崖) in Switzerland.
The bottle only traveled a mile or two westward from where it was likely deposited to the location where cleanup workers found it. It was intermingled with broken clothes, boating equipment and a range of sea trash.
But because the note included the girl's New York City phone number, what otherwise would have been a worthless piece of trash became a priceless souvenir. Workers in Patchogue, about 60 miles (100 kilometers) east of Manhattan, called the number and returned the bottle to her mother, Mimi Fery.
Fery said she sobbed when she heard workers had found the bottle and was grateful to them. “It's unbelievable,” she said Saturday of the ceremony. “The town is amazing, my daughter was a lovely and lively person and very fun, she would do fun things. She always brought joy to everybody no matter how she felt.”
The plate also reads: “I learned that e ven though someone is very small they may have a big heart” and bears a photo of a smiling, young Sidonie along with the date the bottle was found: Dec. 6, 2012.

23.(8分)No spacecraft will ever land on the sun. the sun is a flaming ball of gas that reaches thousands of degrees Fahrenheit. But next year, a ship from Earth will fly closer to it than any man made craft has flown before. The mission(任务)is a big development for scientists and, maybe, for everyone else.
In September 2018, NASA plans to launch the Parker Solar Probe. After a journey of nearly 90 million miles, it will fly within 3.8 million miles of the sun. within two months of launching, the probe is expected to reach the sun’s corona(日冕). That’s the sun’s outer atmosphere of gases.
Getting there won’t be easy. Designing a spacecraft tough enough to hold up to the sun’s heat has proved difficult. But that hasn’t stopped engineers from trying. Temperatures in the corona can reach millions of degrees. The probe will limit itself to regions where things get no hotter than 2,10oF. That’s still a heavy heat load for a spacecraft. But a 4.5-inch-thick heat shield(罩)will protect the probe’s camera and scientific instruments.
NASA says the data the probe collects could provide knowledge into the physics of stars. Our sun is special to us. But as a star, it’s rather common. So the better we understand how it works, the better we understand all stars of its mass and color.
Perhaps the most important is what the probe may show us about solar storms. During solar storms, charged particles stream through the solar system. They can disable communications satellites and shut down powder systems. One study has found that a very intense solar storm could cause up to $2 trillion in damage in the US alone. It could also black out the East Coast for a year.
Understanding solar storms might allow us to predict them and protect ourselves.
That could make even a mission with a billion-plus price tag one of NASA’s great bargains.
1、What can we learn about the probe?
A.It’ll fly closer to the sun that the previous ones
B.It’s the first man made instrument to fly to the sun
C.It’ll get to the core of the sun in nearly two months
D.It’ll fly about 3.8 million miles to reach the corona.
2、What is the challenge for the engineers?
A.Directing the probe to collect data
B.Reducing the temperature of the probe
C.Building a shield against the heat
D.Limiting the probe to proper regions
3、What might be the best title?
A.Exploring the stars B.Getting close to the sun
C.Designing a spaceship D.Protecting the earth
4、Where does the value of the mission lie?
A.Monitoring satellites B.Exploring solar energy
C.Developing scientific instruments D.Forecasting solar storms
(8分)An idea that started in Seattle’s public library has spread throughout 24.
America and beyond. The concept is simple: help to build a sense of community in a city by getting everyone to read the same book at the same time.
In addition to encouraging reading as a pursuit (追求) to be enjoyed by all, the program allows strangers to communicate by discussing the book on the bus, as well as promoting reading as an experience to be shared in families and schools. The idea came from Seattle librarian Nancy Pearl who launched (发起) the “If All of Seattle Read the Same Book” project in 1998. Her original program used author visits, study guides and book discussion groups to bring people together with a book, but the idea has since expanded to many other American cities, and even to Hong Kong.
In Chicago, the mayor (市长) appeared on television to announce the choice of To Kill a Mockingbird as the first bo ok in the “One Book, One Chicago” program. As a result, reading clubs and neighbourhood groups sprang up around the city. Across the US, stories emerged of parents and children reading to each other at night and strangers
chatting away on the bus about plot and character.
The only problem arose in New York, where local readers could not decide on one book to represent the huge and diverse population. This may show that the idea works best in medium-sized cities or large towns, where a greater sense of unity(一致) can be achieved. Or it may show that New Yorkers rather missed the point, putting all their energy and passion into the choice of the book rather than discussion about a book itself.
Ultimately as Nancy points out, the level of success is not measured by how many people read a book, but by how many people are enriched by the process or have enjoyed speaking to someone with whom they would not otherwise have shared a word.
1、What is the purpose of the project launched by Nancy?
A.To invite authors to guide readers. B.To encourage people to read and share. C.To involve people in community service. D.To promote the friendship between cities.
2、Why was it difficult for New Yorkers to carry out the project?
A.They had little interest in reading. B.They were too busy to read a book. C.They came from many different backgrounds. D.They lacked support from the local government.
3、According to the passage, where would the project be more easily carried out? A.In large communities with little sense of unity.
B.In large cities where libraries are far from home.
C.In medium-sized cities with a diverse population.
D.In large towns where agreement can be quickly reached.
4、According to Nancy, the degree of success of the project is judged by ________. A.the careful selection of a proper book
B.the growing popularity of the writers
C.the number of people who benefit from reading
D.the number of books that each person reads
25.(10分)Your 2018 Reading List, Provided by Bill Gates
Most of us can’t live like billionaire Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, but we can read like him. Gates recommended four books in 2018—though some were published earlier.
Leonardo da Vinci, by Walter Isaacson (2017)
The bestselling biographer of Steve Jobs and Albert Einstein researched deeply into da Vinci’s contributions beyond art, highlighting the breadth of his scientific, technological, and creative output. “Leonardo nearly understood almost all of what was known on the planet at the time. That’s mostly because of his curiosity about every area of natural science and the human experience,” said Gates.
The Best We Could Do: An Illustrated Memoir, by Thi Bui (2017)
Gates calls this graphic novel “really impressive”. Bui is the daughter of Vietnamese refugees who came to America after the fall of Saigon, and becoming a parent inspired her to look into her own parents’ miserable history. “I was struck by how the experiences Bui illustrates manage to be both universal and specific to their circumstances,” said Gates.
Lincoln in the Bardo, by George Saunders (2018)
Saunders, a long-time short story writer, won high praise for this novel. The book imagines the ghosts that haunt (萦绕) the basement of Willie Lincoln, Abraham Lincoln’s son, who died at 11 in real life. “Willie’s death after the Civil Wa r made the president have a new understanding of the grief he’s creating in other families by sending their sons off to die in battle,” said Gates.
Origin Story: A Big History of Everything, by David Christian (2018)
This new book is by the creator of Big History, a free, online social studies course. It traces history in wide, sweeping movements, starting with the Big Bang, and it provides, in effect, a short course in modern science. This is a brief history of the universe. “David gets a little stuck on the current economic and political problems in the West, and I wish he talked more about the role innovation will play in preventing the worst effects of climate change,” said Gates.
1、Which books refer to the field of science?
A.Origin Story and Leonardo da Vinci.
B.Lincoln in the Bardo and Origin Story.
C.Leonardo da Vinci and The Best We Could Do.
D.The Best We Could Do and Lincoln in the Bardo.
2、If you are interested in thrillers, whose book will you most probably choose? A.Walter Isaacson. B.Thi Bui.
C.George Saunders. D.David Christian.
3、Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A.The Best We Could Do is an autobiography.
B.Lincoln in the Bardo has been warmly received.
C.David Christian talks much about the part that innovation will play.
D.Readers can only read about Leonardo da Vinci’s contributions towards art.

We hope you can do better next time and can make progress gradually.” From then on, I’m always full of confidence in my studies because I know my parents are always behind me.
That is my family. All the members in my family live in harmony. In my heart, family is the most important forever.。
