2.Directions: Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage
you have just read.
When she was ten years old, Isadora Duncan dropped out of school to teach people dance.
If that job was left to any other ten-year-old, it would have turned out frustrating, difficult, and a
little discouraging.
But Duncan was different. Not only was she already talented enough to earn money even at
that age, but she also had a rare kind of confidence that helped her treat troubles as fuel —
something to elevate the fire that is already burning inside of her.
It's no surprise, then, that when she moved to New York to join a theatre company, she found
herself restricted. The existing dancing style, their way of operating — all of this seemed to her the
work of a misguided past. Duncan was very direct about what she wanted, confidently telling people she had a different vision of dance that she was going to spread in the world. This, naturally, led to ridicule and laughs early on, but as she built up her work, these instances became less frequent. Today, she is remembered as "The Mother of Dance," with much of the modern art owing its expressive style to her influence. Inspired by the ancient Greeks, she brought the style to life.
In her autobiography ( 自传 ), one of the things Duncan frequently refers to as the basis of her expressive spirit is the fact that she had a childhood where she wasn't constantly watched. The expectations of her mother (who raised her) were open-ended. It was the freedom of this lifestyle that drove her to see what she could do.
Growing up, before she left school, she was told one of two things: that she was either completely useless or that she was a genius. There was nothing in between. Even when she started working, people either bowed to her or they basically ignored her. But there wasn't one moment Duncan doubted her own genius.
There is an old quotation "if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole
life believing that it is stupid." And it captures an important truth. At school, Isadora Duncan
was a failure. In the dance hall, she gave form to brilliance.
(1) What does the underlined phrase "treat troubles as fuel" mean?
(2) Which of the following is TRUE about Duncan?
(3) What does the author try to tell the readers in the last paragraph?
(4) What is this passage mainly about?
A.Isadora Duncan's childhood and her achievements today.
B.Duncan's
career development and other dancers' opinions of her. C.Isadora Duncan's
early experiences and the reasons for her success. D.Duncan's high status
in the dancing world and her unique expressive style. 【答案】( 1) A
(2) C
(3) B
(4) C

Many people have long dreamed of being able to fly around as simply as riding a bicycle. Yet the safety and strength of a flying bike was always a big problem. Over the past 10 years,
developments in technology have moved the dream of personal flying vehicles closer to reality. Now, two groups of inventors say such vehicles may be available soon.
The British company Malloy Aeronautics has developed a prototype (原型) of its flying bicycle. Grant Stapleton, marketing sales director of Malloy Aeronautics, says the Hoverbike is able to get in and out of small spaces very quickly." It can be moved across continents very quickly because it can be folded and packed," he adds.
Mr. Stapleton says safety was the company's main concern. He says the designers solved the safety issue by using overlapping rotors to power the vehicle.
The company is testing a full-size prototype of the Hoverbike, which will most likely be used
first by the police and emergency rescue teams.
In New Zealand, Martin Aircraft Company is also testing a full-size prototype of its personal flying device, called the Jetpack. It can fly for more than 30 minutes, up to 1, 000 meters high and reach a speed of 74 kilometers per hour.
Peter Coker is the CEO of Martin Aircraft Company. He said the Jetpack "is built around
safety from the start". In his words, "Reliability is the most important element of it. We have
safety built into the actual structure itself, very similar to a Formula One racing car.
The Jetpack uses a gasoline-powered engine that produces two powerful jet streams. Mr. Coker says it also has a parachute that would be used, if there should be an emergency. "It starts to
work at very low altitude and actually saves both the aircraft and the pilot," he adds. Mr. Coker says the Jetpack will be ready for sale soon.
(1) We can learn from the passage that the Hoverbike ________.
(2) Peter Coker uses the example of Formula One racing car to show that ________.
(3) The underlined word "It" in the last paragraph refers to ________.
A. the jet stream
B. the engine
C. the Jetpack
D. the parachute
(4) What is the author's main purpose of writing the passage?
A. To describe the problems of inventing flying vehicles.
B. To introduce the latest development of flying vehicles.
C. To show the differences between two flying vehicles.
D. To advertise the two personal flying vehicles.
【答案】( 1) D
(2) A
(3) D
(4) B

依据第二段中的“ the Hoverbike is able to get in and out of small spaces
very quickly. It can be moved across continents very quickly because it can be folded and packed.

,故A。

依据最后一段中的“ Mr. Coker says it also has a parachute (下降 ) that
⋯ .,”can be used should there be an emergency. "It starts to work at very low altitude先生
Jetpack

A large body of research has been developed in recent years to explain many aspects of
willpower. Most of the researchers exploring self-control do so with an obvious goal in mind: How
can willpower be strengthened? If willpower is truly a limited resource, as the research suggests,
what can be done to make it stay strong?
Avoiding temptation ( 惑 ) is an effective method for maintaining self-control, which is called
the "out of sight, out of mind" principle. One recent study, for instance, found office workers less
attracted to candy in the desk drawer than that on top of their desks, in plain sight.
The research suggesting that we possess a limited reservoir of self-control raises a troubling
question. When we face too many temptations, are we to fail? Not necessarily. Researchers don't
believe that one's willpower is ever completely exhausted. Rather, people appear to hold some
willpower in reserve, saved for future demands. The right motivation allows us to tap into those
reserves, allowing us to carry on even when our self-control strength has been run down. High
motivation might help overcome weakened willpower-at least to a point.
Willpower may also be made less vulnerable ( 柔弱 ) to being exhausted in the first place.
Researchers who study self-control often describe it as being like a muscle that gets tired with
heavy use. But there is another aspect to the muscle comparison, they say. While muscles become
exhausted by exercise in the short term, they are strengthened by regular exercise in the
long term. Similarly, regular practices of self-control may improve willpower strength.
The evidence from willpower-exhaustion studies also suggests that making a list of resolutions on New Year's Eve is the worst possible approach. Being exhausted in one area can reduce willpower in other areas, so it makes more sense to focus on a single goal at a time. In other words, don't try to quit smoking, adopt a healthy diet and start a new exercise plan at the same time. Taking goals one by one is a better approach. Once a good habit is in place, Baumeister says, you'll no longer need to draw on your willpower to maintain the behavior. Eventually healthy habits will become routine, and won't require making decisions at all.
(1) From the studies in the passage we learn that ________.
A. people have unlimited self-control
B. high motivation ensures one's success
C. willpower is hardly completely exhausted
D. too many temptations often lead to failure
(2) The underlined phrase "tap into" in Paragraph 3 most probably means ________.
A. make use of
B. run out of
C. build
D. increase
(3) The author compares self —control to muscles ________.
(4) To develop a good habit, which of the following does the author prefer?
A. "I will give up dessert and do exercise."
B. "I will set three goals this new semester."
C. "I
will read an English novel every month." D. "I will keep myself from any temptation." 【答案】
( 1) C
(2) A
(3) D
(4) C

依据第三段中的“ Researchers don't believe that one's willpower is ever completely exhausted. Rather, people appear to hold some willpower in reserve, saved for future demands. ”可知,研究人员不相信人的意志力会完整耗尽,他们还有备用的和为未来需求节
省的意志力。

所以从文章中的研究我们认识到意志力几乎没有完整丧失。

应选C。

(2)考察词义猜想。

依据第三段中的"The right motivation allows us to tap into those
reserves, allowing us to carry on even when our self-control strength has been run down." 可知,正确的动机使我们能够利用这些贮备,即便我们的自我控制能力已经被耗费殆尽,我们仍
然能够持续行进。

所以经过上下文的语境,判断出"tap into" 指利用,与make use of 同义。

应选A。

Whilemuscles become exhausted by exercise in the
short term, they are strengthened by regular exercise in the long term. Similarly, regular
practices of self-control may improve willpower strength.

Takinggoals one by one is a better approach.
Once a good habit is in place, you'll no longer need to draw on your willpower to maintain the behavior. Eventually healthy habits will become routine, and won't require making decisions
at all.

所以 C 项 "I will read an English novel every month."

Most people know that listening to music when they are feeling down or depressed can encourage their spirits.
However studies have also shown that music, especially certain tones can reduce stress. Music can change brainwave patterns, deepen breathing, and bring on a totally stress-free and more
open mindset (心态) . Using music to relax when considering a particular problem may not
only raise your mood, but also could help you reach that "a-ha"moment and find a solution.
Music has also been shown not only to make you feel good, but also, to be a great motivator.
For example, during exercise, listening to music can keep you going, or get you to exercise
more by helping you to ignore negative feelings of tiredness and focus on the pleasurable
feelings you get from being absorbed in the music.
Music is mainly used to record emotion. When we listen to a piece of music we share the artist's feelings on a visceral (原来的) level. That can be sad, and who among us hasn't put on a painful love song to share in the misery after a bad break-up? On the contrary, we can share in
the delight of songs of joy and happiness, or any song or piece of music that reminds us of a particular happy time in our past.
So next time you are feeling down, put on Beethoven' s Ode to Joy, I bet you will feel a lot
better about whatever it was that was bothering you!
(1) We can infer from the first paragraph that music can
A. benefit you in many ways
B. promote you to find more questions
C. change the
patterns of your lifestyle D. influence your attention to a problem
(2) The author wrote the second paragraph mainly to
A. tell us a story
B. make some comments
C. give us an example
D. list some facts
(3) When we enjoy a piece of sad music,
A. we'll share the artist's feelings deeply
B. we may recall our miserable past
C. we may be reminded of particular joy
D. we'll show mercy on the artist's life
(4) What's the best title of the text?
A. What music means to a music lover
B. Why people love happy music
【答案】(1) A
(2) C
(3) B

As kids, my friends and I spent a lot of time out in the woods. "The woods" was our part-time address, destination, purpose, and excuse. If I went to a friend's house and found him not at home, his mother might say, "Oh, he's out in the woods," with a tone ( 语气 ) of airy acceptance. It's similar to the tone people sometimes use now a days to tell me that someone I'm looking for
is on the golf course or at the gym, or even "away from his desk". For us ten-year-olds, "being
out in the woods" was just an excuse to do whatever we feel like for a while.
We sometimes told ourselves that what we were doing in the woods was exploring (探究 ). Exploring was a more popular idea back then than it is today. History seemed to be mostly about explorers. Our explorations, though seemed to have less system than the historic kind something usually came up along the way. Say we stayed in the woods, throwing rocks, shooting frogs, picking blackberries, digging in what we were briefly persuaded was an Indian burial mound.
Often we got "lost" and had to climb a tree to find out where we were. If you read a story in
which someone does that successfully, be skeptical; the topmost branches are usually too skinny
to hold weight, and we could never climb high enough to see anything except other trees. There were four or five trees that we visited regularly-tall beeches easy to climb and comfortable to sit
in.
It was in a tree, too, that our days of fooling around in the woods came to an end. By then
some of us has reached seventh grade and had begun the rough ride of adolescence ( 青春期 ). In March, the month when we usually took to the woods again after winter, two friends and I set
out to go exploring. We climbed a tree, and all of a sudden it occurred to all three of us at the
same time that we really were rather big to be up in a tree. Soon there would be the spring
dances on Friday evenings in the high school cafeteria.
