The career of Henrik Ibsen was directly influenced by his childhood. In later years, the great playwright remembered only a cruel, angry father, forced by business defeats to move the family to an old farm outside Skien, Norway, Ibsen's mother, no longer welcomed in the homes of her wealthy friends, started to suffer from depression. At sixteen, the young Ibsen left home, working as an apprentice (学徒) in Grimstad.
Failure, for Ibsen, became a way of life. Catalina, his first literary attempt, was impossible to sell. The privately printed book was eventually sold as packing paper to a grocer. Ibsen sought admission to the university in Oslo but failed the entrance examinations. He tried a career as a journalist, without success. As a stage manager, first in Bergen, then in Oslo, he did better, but lost the latter job when the theater closed down. The experience was not altogether wasted. At Bergen, Ibsen's agreement required him to provide one new play each year, and although none of the five he produced was
well received, the requirement forced him to learn the techniques of his trade.
In 1864, Ibsen took his wife and baby son to Rome, Italy, where they spent five years living in poor conditions. On the edge of starvation, he wrote Brand, dealing with the subject he knew best: failure. Six months after he sent Brand to Danish publishers, his fortunes had changed completely. The play was brought out in March, 1866, becoming an immediate success. With Brand and Peer Gynt, written in the same period, Ibsen won recognition at last. Awarded an annual fixed payment and the title of national poet by Norway, he dropped his shabby clothes and became a well-dressed, neatly barbered, distinguished writer.

C
On Thanksgiving Day at my parents' house, I had the opportunity to walk with them through our neighbourhood park. My friends and I spent so many amazing afternoons there; my father and I played in the evening during the school year. I started to think about sports for the first time in ages. And I thought about how lucky I was to have shared endless hours playing with my dad as a kid. This is what I remember.
I remember opening my eyes early one morning as the sun announced_herself once again to an awakening Rio de Janeiro. As my mother slept, my father prepared fried eggs, which we ate quickly before walking to the beach, still empty and ready to be our playground. I rushed back and forth at full speed, my curly blond hair flowing through the wind. My father chased me back and forth across the sand as adults always do, shortening their steps so that a fleeing child, laughing, always remains a step ahead. When some young boys with soccer balls appeared around us, we moved to quieter ground to play my favourite game—airplane. My father would lie on his back, pull his legs towards his chest and raise his feet in the air. Eager to fly, I placed my small chest against his feet and grabbed his outstretched (伸开的) hands. As my father stretched out his legs, I went higher and higher, flying above the horizon, always balancing above him.
Eventually, it would grow cold or dark or we would be called in for dinner. I can't remember a single specific game or who won or lost. I only remember playing in the red leaves of autumn.

In George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion, the storyline centers around three main characters: Eliza Doolittle, Professor Henry Higgins, and Colonel Pickering. Eliza Doolittle is a flower girl who is under the instruction of Professor Higgins and Colonel Pickering to learn proper grammar and phonetics. Eliza can be characterized as a very sensitive (敏感的) and emotional person. She seeks to be treated like a duchess by men. Her personality clashes (冲突) with the personality of Professor Higgins in an extreme way. Professor Higgins is an arrogant (傲慢的), work-obsessed expert in phonetics who views Eliza simply as an experiment. He is a bachelor who has never
found a place for women in his life due to his obsession (痴迷)with language. Colonel Picketing is a gentleman from India who is also an expert in language. He is gentler than Higgins and treats Eliza with respect while maintaining a professional interest in her. These three characters make up the main action of the play as Eliza learns speech of the upper class from them. She manages to pass herself off as a Hungarian princess at a formal party. This achievement makes Eliza give_credence_to the efforts of Higgins and Pickering. After experiencing life in the upper class, Eliza settles for a lower-class life with a man who loves her for who she is and wants to marry her. After some small and unimportant disputes, Eliza and Higgins remain friends later. Other memorable characters include Mrs. Higgins who maintains an authoritative (权威的)figure over her grown son and Mr. Doolittle who rises from adustman to a respected speaker in the community.
I think that this is a good book because it shows that happiness can be achieved without wealth and fame. I highly recommend it due to its emphasis on grammatical and phonetic correctness.

(2014·新课标Ⅰ)
As more and more people speak the global languages of English, Chinese, Spanish, and Arabic, other languages are rapidly disappearing. In fact, half of the 6,000—7,000 languages spoken around the world today will likely die out by the next century, according to the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
In an effort to prevent language loss, scholars from a number of organizations—UNESCO and National Geographic among them—have for many years been documenting dying languages and the cultures they reflect.
Mark Turin, a scientist at the Macmillan Center, Yale University, who specializes in the languages and oral traditions of the Himalayas, is following in that_tradition. His recently published book, A Grammar of Thangmi w ith an Ethnolinguistic Introduction to the Speakers and Their Culture, grows out of his experience living, working, and raising a family in a village in Nepal.
Documenting the Thangmi language and culture is just a starting point for Turin, who seeks to include other languages and oral traditions across the Himalayan reaches
of India, Nepal, Bhutan, and China. But he is not content to simply record these voices before they disappear without record.
At the University of Cambridge Turin discovered a wealth of important materials—including photographs, films tape recordings, and field notes—which had remained unstudied and were badly in need of care and protection.
Now, through the two organizations that he has founded—the Digital Himalaya Project and the World Oral Literature Project—Turin has started a campaign to make such documents, found in libraries and stores around the world, available not just to scholars but to the younger generations of communities from whom the materials were originally collected. Thanks to digital technology and the widely available Internet, Turin notes, the endangered languages can be saved and reconnected with speech communities.

A review of Robinson Crusoe
This is a novel by the English author Daniel Defoe, published in 1719, which is one of the most popular adventure novels in all literature. It is the story of Robinson Crusoe, an Englishman who is shipwrecked on a lonely tropical island. He builds himself a hut, grows his own food, and becomes self-sufficient. After 23 years he meets with a group of cannibals and rescues one of their prisoners, a young native whom he calls Friday. Crusoe and his “man” Friday become close friends, and when they are finally rescued four years later, both return to England.。
