A
When I was a kid, I read a book about a little girl whose grandma had passed away.
I didn’t really know the words or the meaning, but I liked the sound of it being read.
Before falling asleep one night, I requested my grandma to read the book for me. When she finished reading, I looked into her light blue eyes. “Grandma,〞 I asked, “will you die?〞
“Unfortunately,〞 she said.
“Will I?〞
“Yes.〞
I thought about this response. “Do all people have to die?〞 I asked. “Yes,〞 she answered, “eventually.〞
“Why?〞 I asked.
“How could you enjoy every second of life if you knew you could live it forever?〞“But what if you die?〞 I questioned.
“You never know how much you appreciate something until you lose it,〞 she answered, and then she explained that she had to go. I gave her a kiss on the cheek, telling her that I would love her forever.
The next night, I sat on my parents’ bed watching TV with them. The phone rang.
A chill ran down my back just before my dad answered it. I saw his smiling expression turn into gloom. Then he looked at my mom and me. He stared at us for a long time, and then he said, “Grandma is dead.〞
Then I sat there still for the next few minutes. I had never lost anyone before in my life .I didn’t know what to do. All that ran through my head was that I was never going to see her again. At that moment, I loved my grandma more than I had ever loved before. I thought of everything she had done for me.
Life changes though we don’t expect it to. I never knew I would remember forever what my grandma said that night .I’m upset when people die, but missing them makes me love them more every second. No one can live forever, so we should try to live every second to the fullest.

One winter night, I went to a restaurant for dinner with my family. As we got out of our car, a girl about my age and her mother came up to us. They asked if we had any spare change. My mom immediately asked where they live. They pointed to an old car in a parking lot across the street. The girl said there were six of them living in that car, which was the same size as ours.
My mom handed the girl a few dollars and we said goodbye to them. After sending us to the restaurant, my mom said she had something to do, so she left alone. Later, I found out that she had gone home and emptied our cupboards into a few bags. Then, she brought the bags over to the car and handed them to the family. I wasn’t there when that happened, but I could imagine the joy it brought to their faces.
I asked Mom why she helped those people. She said, “You know, Alice, we are lucky.〞I remember that girl who asked us for change. She was the same age as me, but we looked so different. Here I was dressed in almost new clothes, headed to a restaurant for dinner, and then back home to the bedroom I shared with my younger sister. However, the other girl didn’t have any food to eat, and she was headed back to a cold car shared with other five people.

People love their pets. More than 60% of the US households have pets, and those pet
owners pour $41 billion a year into pet care. This may seem like a lot of money, but when you consider the fact that owning a pet could likely add years to your life, a pet can quickly seem like a wise investment.
According to a study by the Minnesota Stroke Institute that followed more than 4,000 cat owners over 10 years, owning a cat can dramatically reduce a person’s chance of dying from heart disease. Specifically, people who owned cats were 30% less likely to suffer a h eart attack. although those researchers can’t make the same conclusions about dogs based on the data they gathered, they suspect a dog study would provide similar results.
That study adds to the existing evidence that shows how animals can benefit human health. For example, psychologists have found reasons to believe that owning a dog helps lower our blood pressure and cholesterol 〔胆固醇〕.Other researches show that pets help us feel better and help us deal with stress, which can be a source of illness.
Don’t forget the benefits for the elderly. For example, one study observed the neural(神经的) activity in seniors while they walked or interacted with a dog. It turned out that walking with a dog gave seniors a rise in the parasympathetic nervous system activity, which is good because the parasympathetic nervous system helps calm and rest the body.
For whatever reason, pets certainly can have a special effect on their owners.

D. pets can help people feel better and deal with many things
69. The underlined word “seniors〞 in Paragraph 4 probably means “_____〞
A. patients
B. doctors
C. old people
D. young people

B. Owning a pet is a wise investment for everyone.

As we all know, cars make our life more convenient and comfortably. But at the same time they badly pollute the air around them and careless driving also cause traffic problems. Every year millions people lose their lives in road accidents. More and more cars are making roads such crowded that extra space is needed to park so much cars, so we’d better use the bikes or public transport rather than private cars, that can save time and energy. The government should take some necessary measure to deal with traffic jams, such as widening roads or building overpasses. I still call on people use public transport during rush hour.
