New research has shown that loneliness may affect ants to a greater extent than many other living creatures.
It has long been known that loneliness can lead to a shorter life. In humans, it has even been found to be a driver of high blood pressure, sleep disorder, and depression that’s independent of factors like age, race, gender, weight and economic status.
However, loneliness has never been identified as a factor that can cut human lifespan by more than a small part of the average. Ants, on the other hand, appear to be far more sensitive to this stress, with loneliness leading to a surprising 91 percent reduction in lifespan.
That’s at least according to a study that details how “lonely” ants only live up to six days on average. Ants living in a community, on the other hand, were found to live up to about 66 days.
In a series of experiments where ants were picked from their colonies (群体) and separated, they were found to continuously walk without rest, consuming far more energy than they could ever.
The reason for the behavior is that an isolated ant is simple trying to get back to its colony at all costs, and doesn’t know what to do without its nest mates. After all, many entomologists (昆虫学家) would argue that an ant colony is far more a single living entity (实体) than its members.
If you were to take a single part from a clock, it would simply move aimlessly as well, running without a purpose. However, while there is a difference between aimlessness and loneliness, the researchers found that the latter affects lonely ants more directly.
The study indicated that ants can’t even eat alone, as they normally collect some of the food they gather in the field in a specialized organ called a crop. This crop is normally shared with other ants back at a nest, but as for a single ant, it simply just sits there, undigested and useless.
4. How does loneliness influence a person?
A. It can make him very tired of himself.
B. It can leave him in conflict with others.
C. It can lead to him being very independent.
D. It can cause him to suffer from poor health
5. What can be learned from the experiments?
A. Most ants can live about 6 days on average.
B. Lonely ants can become very restless.
C. Human beings are similar to ants in some way.
D. Lonely ants seem to be violent and impatient.
6. Why does an isolated ant walk non-stop?
A. It attempts to return to its colony.
B. It wants to attract other ants to form a colony.
C. It hopes to make signals to its mates.
D. It has to find more food to survive.
7. The author mentioned a clock in the passage_________.
A. to show ants have a biological clock in the head.
B. to prove ants are a well-regulated community.
C. to stress ants are really highly social animals.
D. to compare aimlessness with loneliness.

Kenyan mother Beth Mwende heard her sleeping child cry out, but did not worry after the three-year-old quickly quietened down. The next morning, however, she found her daughter, Mercy, nearly unconscious with two bite marks in the neck. “I didn’t know that it was a snake,” Mwende said.
Although snakebites are common in her hometown, antivenom medication is difficult to get. Mwende lives about 160 kilometers east of Nairobi, Kenya’s capital. So she took her daughter to a traditional healer. He placed stones over the bites. Mercy died within hours. She was one of about 700 Kenyans killed by snakebites each year, notes a report in the scientific publicationToxicon.
The Kenya Snakebite Research and Intervention Center (KSRIC) is working to change that. The KSRIC hopes to have East Africa’s first antivenom medication on the market within five years. It estimates the cost will be about 30 percent of an imported product, which often sells for about US $ 30.
More than 70, 000 people are bitten in East Africa each year. Climate change and deforestation are worsening the problem as snakes get pushed out of natural surroundings into populated areas.
Nearly 100 snakes live at the research center in a forest near Nairobi. Researchers take venom from snakes
and study it before injecting small amounts into other animals, such as sheep. The animals then create antibodies that can be made into antivenom.
“Up to now, no one has made any kind of antivenom in Kenya,’’ said Geoffrey Maranga Kepha, a senior snake handler.
Two effective antivenoms are available in Kenya, from India and Mexico, the center says.
The center is teaching communities that using antivenom immediately after receiving a snakebite can save lives, said head researcher George Adinoh.
“After seeing how people died in Kenya from snakebites I decided to devote my life to coming up with a rescue measure that will help or prevent people from dying from snakebites,” snake handler Kepha added.
8. How does the author introduce the topic of the text?
A. By telling a story.
B. By listing figures.
C. By referririg to documents.
D. By making a comparison.
9. Why did Mwende take her daughter to a traditional healer?
A. She couldn’t afford any modern treatment.
B. She lived where antivenom medication is not available.
C. The traditional way is very effective to treat snakebites.
D. She believed a traditional healer could cure her daughter.
10. What is causing more snakebites to happen in East Africa?
A. Lack of antivenom medication.
B. Environmental damage and climate change.
C. People’s low awareness of the danger of snakes.
D. People’s pursuit of traditional cures for snakebites.
11. What do we know about antivenom in Kenya from the text?
A. Itis taken from antibodies of sheep.
B. There is only one effective antivenom available.
C. KSRIC is trying to develop a local antivenom now.
D. People refuse to use antivenom after being bitten by snakes.

Getting drunk on ice cream used to be the stuff of dreams, but thanks to Will Rogers, inventor and owner of WDS Dessert Stations in Hinkley, Illinois, it has become a delicious reality. The Below Zero icecream machine uses
a unique technique to freeze alcohol, which allows you to turn beers, cocktails and even spirits (烈酒) into delicious soft —serve ice cream.
Rogers was trying to create a highly — caffeinated espresso ice cream flavor when he realized hecould use the same technique with alcoholic beverages. He started experimenting with various gums and stabilizers commonly used in the ice cream industry and eventually patented something called the NEA gel. It’s this magical concoction (调制品) that allows the alcohol to freeze to a near solid inside the Below Zero ice cream machine.
Even though Below Zero changes the texture (质地) of beer, cocktails and even spirits, essentially turning them into soft —serve ice cream, it does not affect the alcohol contentat all. The ABV (酒精度) remains exactly the same, which means you can get drunk on ice — cream just as you would on the same concoctions in liquid form.
Will Rogers claims that it takes around 30 minutes for beer to go from liquid to ice cream form, but higher alcohol content drinks take longer. Essentially, the higher the alcohol level, the longer the wait.
The American inventor plans to sell Below Zero ice cream machines to bars and breweries wanting to surprise their patrons. Metro reports that machines will sell for about 6,000.
12. What’s the name of the machine which can change beer and spirits into ice cream?
A. Will Rogers
B. WDS Dessert Stations
C. Hinkley
D. Below Zero
13. What makes alcohol to freeze to a near solid inside the machine?
A. gums.
B. stabilizers.
C. NEA gel.
D. ABV.
14. What can we know from the passage?
A. The machine can change all liquids into ice cream.
B. It takes 20 minutes for beer to change into ice cream.
C. The higher the alcohol level, the shorter the wait will be.
D. The machine changes the texture of beer, cocktails and even spirits.
15. What can we infer from the passage?
A. The machine affects the alcohol content.
B. You can get drunk if you have ice—creams made from spirits.
C. The American inventor doesn’t want to sell themagical machine.
D. Bars and breweries will not become potential buyers of the machine.

Building a Lasting Social Relationship
We all know that friends are special people who we share our lives with, and who share their lives with us in return.___16___

Led byUniversityofCaliforniapsychologist Megan Robins and her colleagues, the researchers reviewed and analyzed 30 different studies involving over 5,000 participants.___17___
The word “we” moves people from an individual position into a partnership, which makes us more interdependent. “____18____Word use is a window into what people are thinking and feeling without asking them,” Robbins told Science Daily.
___19___The primary point is that interdependence may bring about supportive and relationship-centered behaviors and positive perceptions of the partner — especially important in times of stress and disagreement Contrary to “we-talk”, there is “I-talk”, which refers to the frequent use of the first-person singular pronouns, such as “I”, “me” and “mine”, when writing or speaking. Earlier this year, researcher analyzed a set of data that came from 47,000 people inGermanyand theUS.____20____As you can see from the two studies, too much “I-talk” can make you feel depressed. But “we-talk” can encourage you to become more positive and create a chain effect of healthy interdependence with others.
So next time you are talking to a friend, try using more “we-talk”. You may find yourself feeling more positive — and the effect it will have on your friend will be positive as well.
A. Pronouns offer an insight into whether people see themselves as individuals or as part of a whole.
B. If you are speaking in a person context, you’re speaking about something that’s of relevance to you.
C. Their research also found that “we-talk” is helpful for resolving conflicts.
D. Self-centered people are found to be indifferent to many things in society and other people because all their concentration is only on themselves and their needs.
E. This analysis of “we-talk” suggested that the frequent use of “we” and “us” is linked to happier and healthier relationships.
F. They found that too much “I-talk” was an accurate linguistic marker for the likelihood that someone is feeling stressed or experiencing negative emotions.
G. But seeking friends and keeping the friendship going are never easy.
